How to store food that you buy in bulk - Do’s and don’ts!

I love to buy food in bulk, but it needs to be stored properly to protect it from light, moisture, insects, and more. I will talk about a number of methods that I use, and when and why I use them.
Hi, I'm Vickie. I live off-grid on a modern 40 acre, homestead in Northern Nevada. I love making sourdough breads, cooking, making soap, canning, dehydrating, gardening, making cheese, and a lot of other things that are required living on a homestead. I love to cook from scratch, and to be prepared for whatever life throws our way.

I've found that most dry goods (i.e. pasta, white rice, etc...) stays good for 5 years and even up to 10 years, so long as the jar is very full and an oxygen absorber & bay leaf are left on top. That's for canning jars that aren't vacuum sealed or anything. Oh, and I have found that it's best to use the amber jars, unless you're keeping the jars in a very dark & dry place.

I’ve never heard of using a break-bleeder to vacuum-seal-and the fact that it’s manual makes it a must-have for sure-we’re gonna have to get one 😊👍 If you’re ever out of fingernail polish remover (I didn’t know it worked on sharpies), painters tape works well for the canning lids because I only have to peel it off for reuse. I Love your channel lady, you inspire (and teach) me to be more self-reliant, thank you 🙏🌻🥰

I have found that you can purchase the off brand white plastic jar lids she showed at Wal-Mart and also amazon for a very small price. As for the fact they won't seal tightly to the jar... I put a regular canning lid on the jar and use the white plastic lid as you would a ring, seals tight.

Have you ever put food safe diatomaceous earth in rice and beans and such. It's a super fine powder (usually used in swimming pool filters). You can sprinkle it around a house to kill ants and pests and so on. But about a tablespoon in a 5 gallon bucket kills pests in there and it is not hazardous to people. Just don't get it in your eyes and lungs. Check it out. Be healthy, stay safe and many blessings, Morgan

They are easier to lift when filled, and are perfect for storing small amount foods like spices that I put in small Mylar bags. I got some gamma lids for my 5 gallon buckets and they also fit the smaller buckets perfectly. It’s amazing how heavy 5 gallon buckets filled with food can be. I also store emergency medical supplies and random small household items in 2 and 1/2 gallon buckets.

You can take a dryease marker and write over the sharpie. It will remove the sharpie marker writing.

Hand sanitizer takes the ink off those lids, too.

We only do gamma lids, when we tryed the other lid we would never use the items because the lids were such a pain. I also have a rubber mallet from the dollar tree. I also do the clear tape reused labels.

Be careful if you stack them, we had a couple crack so now we use them in the pantry or keep them on top of a stack. Use a bucket wrench for regular lids.

I’ve learned a lot from you Dehydrated celery in bulk. I didn’t know! I buy celery when on sale & dehydrate it myself Another “duh moment”. I use a hair straightener to seal my Mylar bags, but never thought about fixing a puncture with it 🤦🏽‍♀️ I just bought a 50# bag of organic raw sugar, vacuum sealed part of it in 1/2 gallon jars, most in a 5 gallon bucket with a Gamma lid, thanks for the reassurance that I did the right thing Now, I have 150#’s of non-GMO, unbromated flour in the freezer. How should I store it? I usually store it in gallon zip lock bags in my freezer, do I need a Mylar bag to store in a bucket?

I've been using turmeric over 10 years and I've always found the color to be on the orange side and you mentioned grainy, but this is a root that is ground into a powder form. You might check to be sure it's turmeric.

This presentation was very informative. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge. I've been pressure canning but don't find many recipes for using what I have canned. Would be much helpful if you would share your recipes---ugly chicken, canned roast, pulled pork, canned ground meat and ham. Thanks again.
