I'm a recent physics graduate with a passion for stand up comedy. I've been applying at science museums all across the US to work in an educator, presenter role. I finally got a job offer for $15/hour at a great science museum. But that pay was low for a college graduate. My mom convinced me not to take it. 6 months later, I'm still looking and have taken a big hit to my morale since. Lately I've been thinking, maybe Mom was dead wrong on this one.

She gave a great speech and there is a lot to take away from it. But this definition of passion doesn't really hold up in many scenarios. In life there will be many instances where you will need to give your full attention and energy to things right in front of you that you don't enjoy but HAVE TO do for one reason or another.

My notes: - Passion is a feeling, not a plan. And Feeling's change. - Not everything you do needs to fit into your "passion". Just try things. Go out there and try things. - Don't worry if your career isn't something you want to do for the rest of your life - Success fuels passion more than passion fuels success - There is nothing wrong if you do not have a clear passion. Try things you like! - You could easily miss out on your passion by not focusing on what you're doing now, if you're focused on looking for your "passion" - Don't wait for your passion to show up. Solve problems you like to solve. My key takeaway: Go try things and do things you like instead of purely focusing on finding your passion (or trying to do things you think will fit into it) because passion is not a plan, it's a feeling, and feelings change.

Sure but a little bit of a misconception. Success does not come without starting something and working through it. If you don't have any initial passion where is the drive to even start? There has to be atleast enough interest in something to get started. Now this doesn't need to be this overwhelming life passion but there does need to be enough interest or a spark to get started on something.

I agree! Being passionate about education and advancing your mind is most important. There is never an answer of what you're "supposed to do." I love when Terri said passion can come and go. There's no way to measure how passionate you are about something because you could lose that passion tomorrow. But one thing that will always benefit you, and will always move you forward is education. New material. Whether it comes from a book, a TED talk, or a podcast. Learning something new everyday keeps you well rounded and growing. Do you think it's hard for current students to stay passionate about learning? Do you think students get discoursed by searching too hard for their "perfect career" or "forever passion?" I'd love to hear feedback!!

I'm turning 27 soon and have spent years switching majors and taking time off until I dedicated myself to a major that I thought I ought to be passionate about. Now that I've finished my uni, gone on an internship and have been trying to find work, I'm starting to realize that this tendency to focus on passion has deprived me of years of growth and potential opportunities but also that it's okay for me to think about different ventures. Hearing this talk fills me with a lot of hope that I can still find my own way of doing things by helping others, rather than thinking just about myself.

I totally get this, especially when you're at an interview. The hiring manager doesn't want to hear that my passion (or just something I love doing) is creating and wearing costumes or making hand-crafted art. They want to hear (if I'm interviewing for a graphic designer position) that I'm passionate about marketing or design, or whatever. They don't want your real-world answers. I also love that you mention how this question can be and often is triggering and stressful. And this part - 'you don't follow your passion; your passion follows you' - So true!

I have got my GED a few days ago, and am looking for a college major for further studies. But, I have no budget for any majors so will have to apply for scholarships that are giving to majors which I have never been interested in . Ever since I was a child, I feel I wasn't talented in anything. Now, I am scared that I might choose the wrong one and get stuck in it for my whole life. Here I found this video and click and I think it has changed the way I feel and erase all my worries. Thank you, Terri Trespicio !

I needed to hear this. I’m a senior in high school and everyone always asks me what I’m gonna do after high school, what college I want to go to, what career choice I want and what am I passionate about. I always answer “I don’t know”. I feel panic because it seems like other kids my age now where they wanna go they want to do with their life and I feel useless when I compare myself to them. I needed to hear this because it’s just makes sense that there’s nothing wrong with me and that I had the wrong idea of what passion was and it was stressing me out! I feel relieved knowing that I’m normal and that she said what I could do in the meantime to go after opportunities. I’m not so scared of “being stuck” anymore. This was so helpful! Edit: I’ve responded to some of u in the replies. Thanks to everyone who has replied!

However they havent been usual that every test score i get is the best score in the class. The best scores that i gotten have given different feelings some of joy and others of emptiness of something blank with no color. Something that it can be the best score in the class but to me just a number that brings no feelings at all. The brain can be so complex.I willbe honest. I have to say that success has fueled my passion. But there are times when it has not. The brain is a complex thing.

It took me so many years to understand that i don't have any particular goal or passion in my life. I love to do different things. Its difficult to choose one profession or passion for a whole life. Sometime i thought it is a gift so i can explore myself, can try different things in just one life. But when i see people, friends around me who have their career, living their life i immediately got depressed because they are Something. Nurse, chef, engineer, but me Nothing. But from now on i will do the things which makes me happy instead of searching for passion.

In fact, last month my 7 year old son begged to wash our house windows. My three kids and I smiled and laughed while we passionately washed the windows. If you don't believe me just ask my wife, she'll roll her eyes and shake her head while admitting it's all true. To prove your point, I only learned about my passion after stating my own window washing business because it seemed like a good way to make money. Last point, one of my favorite songs is "when I fall" by BNL. It's about window washing.

There are people who make good money and have a job, but struggle to get out of the bed in the morning because the futility of it all. Her saying 'your passion follows you' is honestly very disingenuous. People who basically do busy work for their career and have nobody that will notice if they disappear one day don't have "Passion" that follows them around. They see the world as ultimately pointless, just a cycle of going through the motions to reach the next day until they die.

Exactly! Even if I love a certain hobby of mine, the idea of doing it for the rest of my life sounds daunting to me and hearing this talk reassures me that not every job I have need to be aligned with my "passions", heck, not even whatever degree I may end up getting. I'm currently trying to narrow down my options but it's difficult to find a career that is both fulfilling to me personally and pays decently, and has a decent work-life balance. Instead of searching for your passions, try searching for your values instead and that will help you see how many opportunities there really are. Committing to a university to attain a degree that will leave you in debt then suddenly realizing it's not what you want to pursue is a scary though, which is why I'm so obsessed with wanting to known exactly what I will be doing in the next 5,10,20 years. And believe me, I need to remind myself this as much as others, you don't NEED to know. Work is a big part of our lives, but there are also other things that matter most :)

Exactly right. Try things, do things and passion follows. This is the way I live my life, was once a knitting and crochet teacher and designer, now working at Sam's Club stocking shelves. Life takes twists and turns regardless of what we think we want. Be present and ride the waves that life provides.

When I feel like I need inspiration I love listening to this talk. It can feel so lonely and difficult trying to achieve your dreams. I also like researching and listening to career coaches as they are helpful. I also signed up to a course called the "career enhancement network", it has helped me loads to find the confidence I was lacking in the pursuit of a new job. Whatever path we chose for ourselves or life deals us, just know you're not alone and other people are facing the same hurdles and obstacles. Passion is hard to find sometimes.

I'm a gearhead. That is my passion. I'll never be rich, I'll spend my entire life covered in grease, dirt and petroleum products. I'm sore at days end, I'm exhausted and covered in filth every day. But when I start driving home from work, I turn on the metalhead rock and by the end of three blocks, I've got a smile you could see on Google maps. My advice to everyone is to find something that you can do that gives you satisfaction at the end of day regardless of how you feel or look. Money is great, but happiness..... That is the the secret of a lifetime career, and emotional stability. Jobs may blow, bosses may be pricks, but if you can smile about what you have done on your way home, you are in at the very least a halfway decent place. Amazing enough, this also applies to every aspect of your life. Thonk about it....

I've struggled my whole damn life with the question: what is my passion? And this lifted such a huge burden from my shoulders. It is okay to just live and see where your life takes you, you don't need to know what you're going to do in 5 years. I love to work jobs that last for few months and can sometimes be continued few months longer. I've always been told that this is the wrong way of doing it but what's the point doing something for years and being totally miserable when you could've been doing many jobs and be curious every time you change jobs, eventually ending up with so many experiences and same amount of money as from the boring option. Best advice is the one: ''Just do something. Go do it''. What ever takes you forward at this point in life, just do that.

I'm in my second year now and I find that I do like physics but I discovered so many other things at college that I liked just as much or more. I’ve spent the past 3+ years, trying to discover my passion and calling for a career, but have been so stagnant and haven’t made any real concrete decisions which has been spiraling me into a negative cycle of depression and anxiety. our passion will come when we make sacrifices in the present that lead us to greater things. Waiting for that “perfect” moment, opportunity, or interest is a recipe for disaster.

We all know someone who is so picky in choosing a spouse, using tunnel vision, they miss out on all the right people, and end up alone at 50 years old. Of course, you should never "settle" for a career path or "settle" for a person, but I think the speaker is right...if you don't have that burning desire/passion that only a few have anyway, simply take a job that will help you get closer to it. It's ok to take an average Joe job...it could very well lead to your passion. Don't hold fear about losing your job either...it is great opportunity to explore new interests.

Those who only ever focus on their passion usually come from wealthy and privileged backgrounds and use their passion as their identity to flaunt. And she was also absolutely right about tunnel vision and losing out on love. I recently dumped a girl I'd known for a while and tried dating because she was so obsessed with becoming a pop-star idol that she very often claimed she didn't have time for anything or anyone else. Wouldn't even text me for days sometimes due to having to focus on her "passion." Do these kinds of people ever really succeed in the end?

And social intelligence. And enlightened self interest, the skill of seeking their own good. They make their own luck. Listen to Bill Burr talk about how long and hard he worked. And for some it was the worst talk because she emphasized the value of money. You could try to follow your passion if you have it figured out but it's difficult if you aren't suceeding and yet the bills keep coming all the same. Kudos to those who have made fortunes on their passions and good luck to those who are so afraid of trying anything for they might end up searching for something to do their whole lives.

After I was promoted to a Manager but then left to travel the world. I came back and worked in a old psychiatric hospital supporting admin staff. I got promoted to a manager and then off I went to another job. It goes on like this. I teach children, adults and volunteer because I get Meaning out of helping people to pass exams, and make choices they never thought were possible. I tell them to try and then go with it. I am still experimenting with life and amazed at how far you can go if you take risks, Having money to pay stuff is so important. There is my answer to the next step. Things change and so do our feelings.
