Stop! Replacing this VVT solenoid won't fix your car!!!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
When a VVT solenoid is full of metal, simply changing out the VVT solenoid with a new one won't fix the engine. The metal is from somewhere inside of the engine and unfortunately, it's time for a rebuild or replace. The VVT trouble code and metal in the screen is the result of the engine failing.

You don't know as a tech where that metal went and circulated through out the engine, that much metal can destroy a engine at any given point, it could destroy the main and rod journals cam bearings, the hydraulic lifters or even the oil pump, etc it would destroy everything

VVT trouble code because it's completely plugged with metal shaving
That glitter is just your old engine trying to tell you that it loves you...
This happened to my daughters Equinox 2.4. Typical timing chain failure, common on these. Replaced and all good.
If any metal fragments goes whith your oil, also investigate your emgine filtration system.
That’s looks like a ecotec engine which more than likely is the timing chain guide coming apart and causing the timing chain to rub against more metal. Doesn’t necessarily mean it needs an engine

Yup happened to my girlfriend sonata check engine light came on check oil level was good. Read the code came up for VVT solenoid went and got a new one. As soon as I pull the old one out it was filled with glitter I immediately know the engine was toast. Engine was knocking like crazy when revved up it spun a bearing.

@dddarien

@@jigwhatup if you see silver flakes on solenoid that’s what it is she was lucky to get a new long block under warranty. I never knew exactly which beer and it was but from my research of this issue more likely it will be piston rod bearings for the Sonatas. Her engine did seize and stop starting. We had to get a new starter too.
There are a number of reasons for this, and not necessarily total ‘engine failure.’ In my case, I installed a defective brand new tensioner that destroyed the chain/smaller cam sprocket, leaving lots of that glitter debris. I expected that glitter when I cleaned the solenoid. After the proper replace/repair, works like new.
Its fine metal emery. Time to drain oil and check more for bigger piece. If no bigger piece than just hav a oil change.
That metal is from the timing chain eating up the block and covers when the chain guides fail. I just tried to bring this engine back to life. The engine in this video is Chevy Ecotec 2.2 or 2.4 L You need to be diligent with oil changes with these engines, but they also have a chain guide bolt failure that releases the guide and loosens the chain just enough to couse it to start tearing into the metal surroundings. The oil pickup in the oil pan was clogged full of plastic guides
Correct and send that oil for analysis to black stone asap
Good ol ecotec. Good job gm
That's off an equinox. The timing chain is tearing up in the motor. Change the timing chain clean the chunks out of the oil pan. Drive
Well that is a terrifying sight
I have a 0& Maserati quattroporte and I ran it overheated and now it just cranks and won’t start leakage is coming from the vvt sensor only on the passengers side valve cover over the head gasket by the way is not leaking or showing signs of leakage any help!?
Would this still read a vvt code & cause stall out?

I’m having the same issue. Now I’m suspecting flywheel and starter teeth damage.
It's just timing chain metal in the oil
The engine also did not come with a PCV valve. There's a little hole in the plenum that has to be cleaned out with the carburetor cleaner. It will make you run out of oil.

That will be GM's favorite little 2.4 Echo engine world's worst on timing chains
I get your point.. But you don't know where that is coming from. It could just be a timing pulley or broken guide that is eating itself and it needs a timing belt change, which is regular maintenance. We can't just LEAP to conclusions after seeing a little metal.

Love it when somebody says but… Yeah, nobody *knows* until the mechanic spends 24hrs tearing the engine apart, puts a micrometer on the trashed parts and silences the critic. But…he’s only going to do that if his customer perceives a problem as *actual* and is convinced enough by his driving experiencing it and your hypothesis-to pay for it. Either that, or a lab oil analysis right before an oil change, or the eventual lit oil pressure light with knocking sounds while engine’s running, should do the trick-to *know* what part(s) the metal is from… and no, that’s not a “normal” condition

@@homesold You can pull everything apart/ timing cover and even pull the heads off in 2 or 3 hours. When you're talking about buying another $3k engine ( or much more)-- then taking a little time to possibly recover your old engine is well worth the evening it costs to do it. Now I'm talking about doing it myself-- so I get that paying someone else to do that is a little more painful. But for me, working on my own cars: it's nothing and totally worth breaking it down and understanding what is actually happening. Making assumptions and leaping to conclusions is never the play; at least not for me. Breaking it down, you not only learn what has gone wrong, you also learn what you still have, what parts you can still use or sell, etc. It's never a bad thing to learn more about your property.

Not necessarily the gm 2.4, 2.2, 2.0 motors all suffered with timing chain issues. Guides are plastic. They break and stretch chains. It might be junk but if you just have the codes you can replace balance chain, timing chain, adjusters, and guides.
