Stop! Replacing this VVT solenoid won't fix your car!!!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

When a VVT solenoid is full of metal, simply changing out the VVT solenoid with a new one won't fix the engine. The metal is from somewhere inside of the engine and unfortunately, it's time for a rebuild or replace. The VVT trouble code and metal in the screen is the result of the engine failing.

    There are a number of reasons for this, and not necessarily total ‘engine failure.’ In my case, I installed a defective brand new tensioner that destroyed the chain/smaller cam sprocket, leaving lots of that glitter debris. I expected that glitter when I cleaned the solenoid. After the proper replace/repair, works like new.

    That metal is from the timing chain eating up the block and covers when the chain guides fail. I just tried to bring this engine back to life. The engine in this video is Chevy Ecotec 2.2 or 2.4 L You need to be diligent with oil changes with these engines, but they also have a chain guide bolt failure that releases the guide and loosens the chain just enough to couse it to start tearing into the metal surroundings. The oil pickup in the oil pan was clogged full of plastic guides

    I get your point.. But you don't know where that is coming from. It could just be a timing pulley or broken guide that is eating itself and it needs a timing belt change, which is regular maintenance. We can't just LEAP to conclusions after seeing a little metal.

    Love it when somebody says but… Yeah, nobody *knows* until the mechanic spends 24hrs tearing the engine apart, puts a micrometer on the trashed parts and silences the critic. But…he’s only going to do that if his customer perceives a problem as *actual* and is convinced enough by his driving experiencing it and your hypothesis-to pay for it. Either that, or a lab oil analysis right before an oil change, or the eventual lit oil pressure light with knocking sounds while engine’s running, should do the trick-to *know* what part(s) the metal is from… and no, that’s not a “normal” condition

  • @calholli

    @calholli

    Жыл бұрын

    @@homesold You can pull everything apart/ timing cover and even pull the heads off in 2 or 3 hours. When you're talking about buying another $3k engine ( or much more)-- then taking a little time to possibly recover your old engine is well worth the evening it costs to do it. Now I'm talking about doing it myself-- so I get that paying someone else to do that is a little more painful. But for me, working on my own cars: it's nothing and totally worth breaking it down and understanding what is actually happening. Making assumptions and leaping to conclusions is never the play; at least not for me. Breaking it down, you not only learn what has gone wrong, you also learn what you still have, what parts you can still use or sell, etc. It's never a bad thing to learn more about your property.
