I normally wear medium to jumbo braids, but when I do wear twists (medium), I can wear them for a month with no locking. I moisturize in twist once a week, take down each twist one at a time, detangle, remove shed hair and re-twist. I even do my whole wash day routine and moisturizing routine in the twist, then take them down one at a time, detangle, remove shed hair and re-twist. Since I started this technique, my hair has never even tried/thought about locking.😂😂😂❤❤❤

YES Sis! I stay WAY AHEAD of dryness and find I only have to redo (diy) my rubber african threading once a month or so. I only have 7, and I do not need a comb when redoing my hair.

Great video. Lubricating with oil for the takedown process has been a game-changer. My hair naturally starts to lock up at 4 weeks at the nape of my hair so using oil helps to break up the matting and tangles. I also keep my mini twists stretched.

❤❤Oh my God u are so right ...what you said about starting the twists by braiding preventing locking. I installed my twists this way about 4 weeks ago adding in some kinky extensions for a fuller look..so when u said this i just took a few out to check how my hair is doing. I tell u,no matting at the root at all. I have been moisturizing every 2 to 3 days. Of course,it looks frizzy now and i am no where near taking it down😂

Great tips! Yes, two strand twists was all I did to start and maintain my locs for 2 decades. I would just wash once a month and allow to air dry. I had to keep moisturized in between without using too many emollients that would add slip, since slip was the last thing I wanted. But the shrinkage from adding moisture every few days was how I made sure my locs stayed locked. I'm curious about the Curl Maker I see on your shelf in the background. Is that still a part of your routine while you're keeping twists all the time? If so, how are you using it? I normally think of it in terms of a twistout or WnG.

interesting about your loc journey. I got the curl maker to try and use it to seal/frizz my ends but it didn’t quite work 🤷🏽‍♀️. so it’s just sitting here for now…

They do!! Braids are actually more beneficial and they prevent tangles much better but the two issues I have with braids is the time they take to instal and uninstall plus they make my hair look thinner so hence twists are still my go to.

I am trying to stretch my twists to one month….but 2 weeks is when they need redone. I start with a braid which definitely helps. Winter is here and so I can stretch my twists in braids and wear a satin cap followed by a hat . So will see if I can get away with not retwisting for 4 weeks with out locking, 🤔

I live in a satin bonnet from fall to spring, and always have one under my hats. In summer I still will use satin to cover my head when not out and about. I'm about to put my hair back into mini twists today for the month of February so hopefully they don't Matt and loc up. Though I am tracking my detangle sessions to track my breakage and shedding so I can reverse it. Using chebe green and black tea spray for this month as well!

@@yvonnemakori9869 braids themselves don’t cause thinning. It’s something about the individual braids you may have gotten. Too heavy, tight etc that would thin the hair but if installed well and maintained they are a great option

I find that extensions weaken and thin out the hair regardless what the extension is made from. I've used yarn, Brazilian wool, Marley hair, reg braiding hair, softer braiding hair, etc all of them damaged my hair. So focusing on just doing my own hair and learning everything I can about my own hair structure.
