The Philippine topping of coffee being too strong might have been because the 'standard' instant coffee here in the Philippines tends to be something called '3 in 1' which is powdered milk/creamer, instant coffee and sugar and dissolves almost immediately with any form of moisture.

I grew up mostly eating my oatmeal with butter, cinnamon, and brown sugar! Not long ago I found a maple pecan butter that tastes great mixed into oatmeal. When I'm feeling more like savory oatmeal I like to add a little shredded cheddar and a seasoning mix from Penzey's spices called Justice which mostly tastes like onion. As an Aussie also I agree with this. My favourite is with the ice cream and milo mixing it together until is like a soft serve. Mandatory that you’re super generous with the amount of milo. Otherwise another Aussie tradition that every kid has done at one point or another is making milo paste. Heaps of milo! Like let’s be real it can vary from a 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup depending how your day was and a couple of table spoons of cold milk then stir until a think paste. Is okay if it’s lumpy. But a milo episode would definitely be something to consider as it’s very popular drink in various Asian countries also.

I’m glad there were so many savory ones! I discovered “savory oats” last year and it was an eye opener. I feel like most Americans see oatmeal as strictly sweet. Some of my faves are cocoa powder, peanut butter, and topped with either strawberries or bananas (if I have them on hand), I also love topping oats with Greek yogurt and fresh fruit- the yogurt really makes it. And for savory I also like treating it like congee so sautéed mushrooms, green onions, sesame oil and seeds, and fried egg is really good. But this gave me some great ideas to try!

As a Swede I highly approve of the Canadian oatmeal of topping it with Lingonberry jam and maple syrup, sounds yum! In Sweden it’s super common to put some lingonberries on top of hot oatmeal, and then pour some cold milk on the sides of the oatmeal in the bowl (cow, oat, soy, whatever milk you like). The temperature contrast is nice between the porridge and the cold milk. And the milk helps round out the lingonberry jam. And the lingonberry jam isn’t as sweet as other jams, so it makes for quite a refreshing breakfast. But maple syrup and lingonberry combo sounds delicious and something I will have to give a try (Maybe with some cold milk, we like our dairy here in the nordics). But the maple syrup taste I can imagine probably goes well with lingonberries

At the end, you said "it's cool to think outside our own boxes of what is a 'good' topping". When I watch this series, I actually think the opposite. I look at oatmeal and think "breakfast porridge". It's not savoury, it's not exactly sweet, it's just a plain base for my fruit or yogurt. When I watched this video, my perception expanded and I have now unlocked oatmeal as a complex base for toppings I didn't even give a second thought to before. I can put literally anything I want on it now. The oatmeal broke out of the box, not the toppings. Food for thought!

The savoury ones are so intriguing! Along the pina colada lines, one of my favourite porridges to make is with coconut milk as the main liquid, mango (fresh is best but I live in Northern Europe so frozen is what I've got) and a sprinkling of palm sugar to make a cheater's version of Thai sticky mango rice. To be fair it's probably not much more work to actually make the real thing...

OR, what else to put on instant Mac n cheese? You might like danish pasta casserole; I guess you could prepare mac´n cheese with the same ingredients as well. You stack alternating layers of leftover noodles you mixed with dices of ham, peas and baby carrots (where I live you can get cans of precooked peas and carrots) with grated cheese in a greased casserole and then pour over it a mixture of eggs and milk, like thin scrambled eggs. You can leave out the egg mixture, but then a lot more cheese is necessary to keep it from falling apart if you put a piece on a plate. It´s ready if the egg mix is fully set and the cheese melted, which takes an hour plus/minus 15mins on 350F. Depending on your oven you might want to cover the top with tinfoil to prevent the top layer of pasta from drying out in the corners.

I have a couple of sweet oatmeal versions I normally make. One is raspberry and choc: I cook the oats in soy milk (to make it creamier than just being made with water) and add cocoa powder and a little sugar to sweeten. I stir in chia seeds and finally frozen raspberries towards the end so they soften but don’t cook. The tartness of the raspberries balance out the rich cocoa oats. The other is a Persian inspired version. I cook oats in soy milk again, add a splash of rose water and some chia seeds. Then serve sprinkled with brown sugar, chopped pistachios and sliced figs and strawberries. You can do any fruit combo though, like banana, peaches or mango.

This reminds me of when I first started babysitting my niece and nephew and they kept asking for something before bed so I actually ended up inventing an oatmeal that they loved and ask for to this day 6 years later. It is called chocolate oatmeal and you just cook the oats in milk with a couple spoonfuls of hot cocoa powder then once it’s cooked just add some chocolate sauce and mix in some hazelnut coffee creamer and it’s done. It is really good although not the healthiest.

But I add baking cocoa and then sugar - the good thing about this way is that you can add as much/less sugar as you want or use other sweeteners like honey or agave sirup (its an amazing sweetener) if you avoid sugar. I really loved all the different ideas, I am pretty l Iost. Please know we love your videos because of the charm and personal input you bring. I found these hard to follow. It's fun to see all of these different variations. Please don't think it annoys us to to have more than one episode for one ingredient. I understand if these were better served in a faster format. I just don't want you to think we need this page always to be pleased. ♡♡♡ Your slow trek through the dishes helps us study howv the items all come together and we love seeing all the different art backgrounds. This was so fast pace, I don't remember if you had an artist. Thank you so much for bringing back your tasting if the dishes. It gives us a wrap up & a personal account of which parts were difficult or different. My kids were very sad that there wasn't a tasting this time. They look forward to seeing what Beryl thinks! We are definitely going to try hot cocoa oats! This was so fun!
