I was critized on a stream for "portraying a stereotyipcal mexican accent", they were trying to say I was being being racist by pretending I have a mexican accent with me not being mexican. I've experienced the opposite. My parents have been calling me "Jessica" since I was three, and they rarely call me by the actual Mandarin name they gave me. I've had non-Asian people accusing me of trying to "be white" and "disrespecting my own culture" for not using my "real Asian name." It's more fun now that I changed my last name to my husband's, because when people see my name, they don't expect to see an East Asian woman.

I’m sick of this. I actually visited Japan in January, and they couldn’t literally care less about this kind of stuff. A good example of this being that you can only wear a yukata/kimono if you’re Japanese. There were places that you can buy and rent kimonos in places like Tokyo, and the locals were actively trying to sell them to me. My cousin’s Japanese teacher, who speaks 90% english, also confirms many of this stuff. All they ask is common human courtesy (aka common simple respect), which western countries really seem to lack anymore. The biggest issue is all of these people who aren’t even of these races/ethnicities doing false justice.

In Europe, depending wich part of your country you're from you can get totally different names. If you're french for example you can have "basic white names lol" but if you're from Corsica, Britanny, Basque or other regions you have names based on the local culture and language. Yes you can literraly live years in France among french people without earing a single "typical" french name. But don't forget whites are americans.

When I was a kid, my family had a girl from Tokyo come stay with us (in the middle of a bunch of wheat fields in the PNW lol) for a month as a foreign exchange student. She brought me a traditional kimono and lots of Japanese gifts for my family and I. It’s a sweet memory looking back and I was worried it would be too taboo now and labeled as ‘cultural appropriation’. I’m so glad the consensus is that it’s good to appreciate other cultures and partake it in respectfully of course. I grew up in the Celtic societies as well as Highland games, even playing the bagpipes, around my area and have the full kilt with my clan and argyle uniform. It was always so nice seeing people from all different backgrounds at Highland games partaking in the traditional festivities and having fun while enjoying a very old and unique type of culture. Only form of cultural appropriation in that realm I truly consider is those mini kilts lol

Her LEGAL name is Nezuko... So is she appropriating Asian culture for her name despite having no part in the choosing of her name? I hope we leave this whole "appropriation" thing behind because otherwise she has a rough future all because of the name her parent's gave her.

I don’t know but I would assume that all cultures mix together to form a global mashup culture. Wich means western people interacting and enjoying other cultures should be in their best interest. It’s literally a wet dream come true. And yet they don’t want western people to be interested in other cultures because that’s cultural appropriation. They are idiots absolute idiots who are equally as dumb as the extreme right. When ever someone proudly proclaims they are extreme left or extreme right you already know that they are extreme dumb. Cultural appreciation was never a bad thing to begin with. It is the act of sharing culture between different groups of people. Its basically the same thing as trading. Am I commiting an "appropriation of goods" every time I buy a pen at a chinese supermarket? Of course not, I want to buy that pen, and the owner wants to sell me the pen. We share the things we are proud of, and adopt the things we admire.

@@pablopereyra7126 there's a difference between appropriation and appreciation. To appropriate is to steal something and claim it was yours all along. To appreciate is to use something respectfully because you like it. For example, a white guy wearing a Iroquois war bonnet is appropriation, because you have to earn the right to wear one in Iroquois culture. On the other hand, me wearing a huge sombrero is appreciation. I live in a place near Mexico where it's really hot and sunny. If a hispanic person saw me with the sombrero they'd probably think one of three things: I lost a bet, I'm going to a party and didn't want to forget my hat, or it's hot and sunny out and this was the best hat available.

I'm from Spain and apparently Japanese people really enjoy our culture, like flamenco music and dance, Spanish food, the Barça FB... When I went over there I met a Japanese girl whose nickname was "Mañana" (morning/tomorrow in spanish) and I was like "that's a really weird nickname haha, no one's called like that in my country". She loved Spain and I loved Japan, and we both had our innocently distorted ideas of each other's culture, but we learned from each other and laughed about the cliches. She thought we ate paellas every day and slept five hours siestas and that we walked around in the traditional red outfits that we wear in fairs. She gave me my nickname, Tsuki, and I still call her Mañana, even though it sounds weird, even if she's not Spanish, even if I'm not Japanese, it was a beautiful exchange where we both respected each other. I'm kinda worried this kind of exchange is going to become impossible at this rate.

Indonesian here! Mei is actually a COMMON name among Indonesian! Indonesian people is actually diverse but you'll see Muslim people and Chinese people is pretty common. so, Mei in Indonesia means the month of May, you know, the month came after April and before June! There's lots of girls who are born in may named as Mei ^^! and i do think mei has it's own meaning for my Chinese friends! sorry for bad English, i hope this explain! edit: it is really common for parents to name their child with whatever they desire, so we do have unique names inspired from around the world!

I’m not Asian. But, my real name is Mekayla and it means “form of Michael - who is like god”, origin in Hebrew. No, I’m not a Hebrew either, I’m an Hispanic. People assume I’m a “white girl” for having a name from an origin. My middle name is Reyna (meaning Queen) and someone told me to not appropriate Spanish names when my family are Mexicans/Hispanics. 🤦‍♀️

It's funny too since for some reason people seem to forget that, in origin, Spanish is a 'White' language deriving from Spain. I don't know why, but some people seem to think Spanish developed in South America and Mexico haha. People are weird.

Is so weird seeing American white people trying so hard to be an perfect "ally" (that's usually just white saviour complex, tbh) that start speaking over minorities voices. Like, as a Mexican, I have seen a lot of people reacting violent when someone makes simple Día de los Muertos or Catrinas or Aztecs, and every time someone tells them that we actually don't mind it and that we are grateful with the representation, they act like we don't know what's best for us. Because you know, there's nothing more anti-racist that telling POC that they don't know anything and that we must listen only to white voices.

This reminded me of some article I read a while back about how books about minority groups (specifically novels where the narrator is a part of the minority groups) almost always did better if someone from the majority group (like a white person if it's about Mexicans, or a straight person if it's about a gay person) wrote it, because the masses, without actually knowing about the minority group, feel the books written by the majority group are "more accurate." I think this specific problem is worse for books about POC than books about queer people though.
