Stone Cold Steve Austin gained an incredible fan following during 1997. Thanks to an exciting and story-filled rivalry with Bret "Hitman" Hart, Steve Austin became one of the most popular superstars in the WWF and Vince McMahon took notice. Plans were set in motion right after WrestleMania 13 to push Stone Cold Steve Austin higher up the cards, and the end goal was to bring Steve Austin to WrestleMania XIV to win the WWF Championship.
After WrestleMania 13, Steve's feud with Bret Hart continued. The Hart Foundation were formed when Bret turned heel, and so Austin would work against the Harts while continuing his climb up the ladder. 1997 would lead to Austin becoming a 2 time tag team champion and a 2 time Intercontinental champion, but 1998 would be the year where Steve Austin would rise to the very top, becoming the WWF champion at WrestleMania and forever solidifying himself as a legend of the WWE.
This mini documentary from Wrestling Bios covers Stone Cold Steve Austin's career from WrestleMania 13 to WrestleMania 14. Topics covered include:
00:00 - Steve Austin after WrestleMania 13
03:44 - The Austin vs Hart feud continues
05:34 - Steve Austin feuds with Shawn Michaels
08:17 - Austin's rivalry with Owen Hart begins
11:26 - Steve Austin and Vince McMahon begin their story
13:12 - Mike Tyson's involvement at WrestleMania XIV
18:04 - Austin wins the WWF title for the first time
- Much More!

That run from late 1996 to mid 2001 was such a wild one, every week you had to tune in to see what Steve Austin was going to do next and no wrestler has ever provided so many legendary moments. It was such an amazing time to watch WWF, I don’t think we’ll ever see a run like it again.

Then one night in early 1997, just after WM13 actually, I was channel hopping and I flicked on to Sky Sports I think it was and the WWF was on. Steve Austin was talking in the ring. I thought sod it I’ll watch a bit of this. After a while I couldn’t believe what I was watching. I thought yeah this guy is worth watching. There was no more cartoon fools carrying bins to the ring. I started watching regularly after that. Because of Austin.

As I got older, I started to appreciate Austin even more. Not only is he the biggest superstar of the 90s, but he also was one of the best pure wrestlers in the ring (The Attitude Era doesn't really reflect all of his in-ring capabilities imo). He really had it all and now I truly see why people argue for Austin being the GOAT. Not just as a talker or wrestler but the in the sense of being THE complete package.

I’m a little hazy on the specifics of it, but i know the Shawn’s attitude when Rock first got to the fed made the issue way worse to the point where Rock never wanted to work with Shawm when he came hack and Rocky was on the very too of the business.

I always believed that if Shawn Michaels didn’t back out of the world title match with Bret Hart at WrestleMania 13, Stone Cold would have never gotten pushed to the main event spot, since it looked like Austin’s rise to the top really started at the submission match with Bret. I also think Bret leaving WWE after the Montreal screw job helped Austin out too since that left WWE short of main event wrestlers.

I see your point but the only reason why I said that..because I’ve seen a lot of people talking about HBK and HHH using there backstage powers to hold the rock back even Bret Hart said in a interview they wanting him to buried the rock when he (Rock) was the IC champ in ‘97 Bret said he wouldn’t do it I believe its around that one match him and The Rock had I’m probably not quoting it right word for word but it’s a video on. Also I do think HHH would’ve became the star that he is just later on maybe around 2001-2003 time frame not 1999 if Shawn and Bret stayed around that long eventually WWE would have to create new stars HHH probably would’ve been Y2J in 2000 but just in a heel character but I could be completely wrong about that.......S/N: I didn’t even think about Undertaker so now if you think about 1998 time frame where HHH and The rock started to catch fire in upper mid-card but you still have HBK and Bret in the company would’ve been tough get in the main event picture with those two plus Austin and Undertaker at the top also

So with the people saying no to doing jobs it would end up how it always does, them out of the company and WWE making money with other people.

Badass remix. It sounds better than his original version. The 1st thought that always comes to mind when watching an Austin vid is what the hell were Bischoff & wcw thinking when they let him go??? Thank you for detailing his match with Shawn at the KOTR '97. Will watch this soon. Where were the parents of the fan? The circumstances during Shawn vs Austin at WM XIV somewhat parallels the Curt vs Bret Summerslam IC match, except Curt was more professional about passing the torch despite his pain. Just opinion but their WM match is highly underrated. They still put on a very physically intense match that didn't disappoint. Tyson somewhat ruined the finish with that horrible fast count. Austin throwing the IC belt off the bridge- one of the best WTF moments!

It would be interesting to see a video on how Vince revealed himself to be the owner of the company. I remember when he was a kayfabe announcer and that it became apparent after the steroid scandal that he was the actual owner. But was that dealt with in tv/kayfabe storyline? I'm having a hard time recalling that.

To be fair it was a much more unique situation. It wasn't that the fans just started liking Austin and disliking Bret Hart. American fans started to Love Steve Austin and the majority of fans from the rest of the world loved Bret Hart. That heel/face dynamic was something that was never really seen before or since. Man, I really wish Montreal didn't happen. We were robbed of years of Austin/Hart feuds. I loved Austin/McMahon as much as the next guy, but I can honestly say I would have liked years of Austin and Hart going at it much more. There was an intensity between those two that you just don't see much of back then and now for that matter.

I am always amused when revisiting the Austin-Michaels program in 97. They did some face to face promos, where Shawn hilariously tried to 'out-tough' Steve Austin. Like Steve, Shawn takes to calling Austin 'son' - and he just looks and sounds like a boy in man's world.

Great bio as always, and it's interesting regarding Austin's transition from being booed, to a mixed reaction, to cheers. While he definitely wasn't a traditional clean-cut babyface as you mentioned here, Austin did start doing his "Gimme a Hell Yeah" question/answer bit in his promos to connect with the crowd a little more. Also, I never noticed in those Austin/Michaels clips that Shawn was wearing a Homer Simpson shirt. Nice! Something that I just didn't pay attention to watching it back then.
