@O-Wolf He talked about this with a few other popular KZreadr, one being Seth, and essentially they talked about how he has an ego but he doesn't train to validate his ego. Everybody has an ego as it's what makes us individuals, but he doesn't allow it to overule and diminish the quality of his training by trying to feed it. Our ego is simply how we view ourselves in society, and how we use that to navigate it. I know what you mean, but it makes more sense to say "he doesn't train with his ego" or "he leaves his ego at the door" as opposed to "he has no ego". It's a very common misconception though

My very first style I studied was Isshinryu Karate, and this was my spam move lol. One very well placed side kick with the heel will sit almost anyone down. Then you can really aim it anywhere. Hip, thigh, knee, sternum, ribs, abs, arms or chin....it really doesnt discriminate.

@@MMAShredded , these breakdowns are awesome - would love to see more about this specifically, as well as other feign/fake/juke (?) moves. In practicing this, what would the top vulnerabilities/risks be when launching this correctly? What are the likeliest ways to screw this one up? What's the best way to respond to it or guard against it? (i.e. - most of the time that knee comes up = inside low kick, so probably not helpful to always guard against a feigned low/switched to high kick, but if someone has launched this already and you think it might be coming again, is there a neutral defense that kinda works for either, or even a counter that works for either?

  • @theWillN

This kick and footwork was my bread and butter, but I learned it from a TKD base. Rear leg slide is the star of this show. Since all kicks start with a raised knee, I use this slide + a more squared MT stance which lets me feint into punches, elbows, and teeps too. Most people think you need to be in a bladed stance to smoothly transition into a side kick but you’d be surprised how easily you can disguise it from less traditional positions.

when your side kick gets caught, it helps to bend your knee, square up and try push kicking your way out. love to see you working with that side kick more tho. can be an under rated strike when its set up well.

I gotta try it! The side kick is a favorite of mine and I'm always trying to incorporate it into Muay Thai since I was a TKD kid.

As a black belt myself I laughed for a second. Then I remembered that this is actually an advanced technique. The precursor to learning it is step into side kick. Good work! I love watching you soar. Edit: should say spar but this fits too.

Tkd black belt here. Make sure once you connect, you follow through by pushing off the ground and delivering that energy through your kick to actually push them back. The kick doesn't do anything if it only taps the opponent

is this actually capable of doing any damage? or is it just more of a distance management tool? I have mostly BJJ and some boxing exp - apologies if this is a dumb question... just seems like a fairly weak strike from the outside looking in

@@johnconroy9989 yeah in general we use it as distance management. If you want to do damage with tkd the best way is with a head kick or bait then into lunging forward and get them with a spinning back kick

That kick catches so many people out. Very dangerous against people who box etc. Catches the ribs badly when they close the gap with a jab.

And then you can also take this leg to the head as a lead roundhouse from that chamber. It’s a very natural progression. Start low as you hit the inside leg kick. Feint, chamber, and side kick to control distance, and use that distance to establish your timing. When your opponent becomes committed to closing the distance and countering/using footwork to do so, use your own footwork to place them in a position where they feel it’s appropriate/necessary to wait and counter. Present them with the chamber of the side kick, and roundhouse them placing your shin on the temple

That hop-step you can actually do it with a variety of different kicks and punches to trick people and score a point, but for power it only seems to works with linear kicks. That being said, I can see Jeff is one of those rare guys that does amazing drive-by angle changes. And theoretically someone with that skill level could use the hop-step with less powerful blows, with a drive-by to dramatically change angles, 'then' throw something with real power. You do see some guys do something like that 'very rarely'. I saw I guy do an Ali shuffle, hop-step a jab, pivot swing his rear leg to an off angle, nail a lead leg side kick the liver (giving him a little distance) then chambered a rear leg round kick and picked his target (matrix level stuff to watch). It's so rare to see those drive-by techniques done well, that's why I love watching Jeff's. Awesome to see something so rare and technically brilliant.

Couple things you can also do; Throw the side kick, as a set up. Then; pump the side kick, I like to pump the side kick twice and hit them (follow.up) with the lead back hand. 2nd; throw the side kick; when recoiling the side kick, keep that same side kick up. If opponent charges, you catch him with it. Quick question; where are you located? Seen more than a couple of your videos. Wouldn't mind exchanging techniques and some good sparring.

If you can do a quick kick (round, side and heel kicks work best) from the same leg to the head or to the legs on half beat timing you can often times easily take advantage of an open target. You can also do the same thing with the opposite leg on a regular beat timing or a delayed beat timing depending on your opponents positioning after the slide up side kick. You can also do it as a side teep or a heel kick to stab through the guard or to slip around the guard like a jab or uppercut down the center or a hook from the side. You can even fuse your double step technique into it to make it a kind of fake out with both level change and angle change just like with a blitz jab or hook into another angle making it far easier to get solid positioning, remain defensively and evasively responsible all while you cause your opponent to leave openings to the head and body more often. It is also just an extremely effective step shift for any kind of kicking really and can be used to great effect while punching if used with solid head movement, but truly has a profound impact on high kicks and kicks that are harder to land to the head. Like axe, side and heel kicks all because of the sheer variability of the strikes you can throw effectively from the footwork. The number of variables you are able to introduce from the same footwork flow also sort of causes a feed back loop on itself where because it is so effective it makes more and more options open up as you get more and more effective at the options you already have giving you an massive amount of highly adaptable flow for a huge number of techniques from a very specific bit of motion that is extremely effective. Very much like your double step low kick. Hope that makes sense and is valuable to you 😌🤙🏾
