    I suffer from permanent injuries from shattering my pelvis in a car accident at 19. I wallowed in despair for so long, focusing on my suffering for years, but discovering Stoicism really turned things around for me. I still have the chronic pain but I'm no longer suffering

    I feel your pain! I had two hip surgeries when I was 10 (I’m 40 now) and am reminded of my limited mobility every day (I also have a slipped disc in my lower back)- truly, putting my socks on in the morning is the first challenge I face. But despite the pain and discomfort, I’m still very active! I work out daily and play in recreation basketball and softball leagues. I get so mad at the pain, but I listen to my body and make whatever adjustments I need to in order to push through. Stretching is so important. I’m also incredibly mindful of good technique while I exercise and I’m not embarrassed about using a back brace for any physical activity I do. It’s all annoying, but manageable. Anywho, Stoicism has been key for me too! 👊🏼

    @@user-kf8wb2cq4fthere is a struggle that will always be connected to pain, especially to chronic or debilitating pain. But there is a separate kind of deeper mental suffering or despair that can accompany it, when you do not have the tools to cope. It is very challenging but it possible to learn to keep that secondary suffering to a minimum.

    I understand what you are going through, I have lived with ongoing pain for 40 years and know how isolating and lonely it can be. But I have found comfort in the thought that most people are dealing with something and I really appreciate the days when I have less pain. Anyway good luck and God bless :)

    Wishing you a full recovery, Ryan! I rolled my ankle playing 6-a-side soccer and played for 2 more weeks in pain before I saw a physio for my shoulder, and he suggested an x-ray. It turned out I broke my fibula. You just never know...

    When I was 33. I was running to go to work. I was running for the door. Suddenly I was airborne. I land and roll. I get up, light headed and when I try to walk, I saw I hurt my ankle. I pushed a row of carts in as it was the only thing holding me up. I worked 8 hours on a bad ankle. The next day, my ankle swelled, it was HUGE! It took a couple weeks for me to be able to walk without a limp and without hurting

    I have read some of your books and following your KZread videos with delight. And get your weekly emails. The injury video came at the perfect moment. I will be 80 next month and the week before I will be having a total knee replacement (second one). My goal is to walk next January in the MLK March in San Antonio. I have walked it previously and have led a walking group, except have been sidelined for three years. Now starting over. Your videos are great. Thanks.

    Hello Warren, I'm responding to your note because Warren is my 105 year old grandmother's maiden name. She lives in Dallas, so Texan's are a hearty bunch. You'll make it easily. You'll pick up where you left off. You won't be 18 again, but nobody is. The best thing to do is do your best. Have fun. Your luck to be 80, so many good souls don't get to 80, much less 105.     This is unbelievable timing. I just hurt my toe my toe two hours ago (I'm pretty sure it's broken), and this video came up in my recommendations. I've been practicing Stoicism for a couple years, and I've watched a number of your videos over that time, but this is so perfectly timed and should be very helpful. My injury will be another test of my ability to apply what I believe. I've become pretty good at not wishing for things to be other than they are, not wishing that things didn't happen, etc. That's very difficult right now, because this almost didn't happen. I just started training jiu-jitsu about a month ago, and tonight there was a pankration class I wasn't planning to go to, but then decided I would, and that's where I got hurt. I'm very unhappy right now. I won't be able to train until this heals, I don't know how this will effect my ability to do my job, etc. I've got a lot to deal with right now. Thank you for this video, Ryan. I'm going to need these lessons over the coming weeks.

    Thank you Ryan for discussing this. About a year and a half ago I sustained Traumatic Brain Injury. I pushed myself to try and go back to normal life waaaaaaay too early despite what everyone around me suggested. I thought I was better or stronger than this. What I'm going through is an invisible disability which is hard for people to conceive of. I've been using Stoicism to accept this is a new chapter in life. I'm not helpless, but I'm also not who I previously was. I do have limitations now, but I can also do a hell of a lot that doctors were unsure I would be able to. It's nice to have someone discuss these struggles in life. Thank you.

    I’m lying here listening to this in week 4 of my broken ankle, (broke the other one in 2020) I thought it couldn’t happen again because I learned to be more mindful while walking, running, cycling, on stairs etc. but all it took was a quick turn on the edge of pavement and in one second i rolled my ankle and went full weight on the rolled ankle: I instantly knew I just changed my next 3-6 months. This time around I know to really care for it in order to be well as soon as possible and use my downtime wisely - like listening to this video!

    Listening to your body💯 I am in my 50s. Now, I've finally learned to listen to my body when I found myself after eating a simple chicken dinner. I was having a hard time breathing, I was lethargic and thought what in the world🤔 I did it again the next day, and sure enough, it happened again🤦‍♀️ At that point I realized my body was telling me, "what part of you can not eat any meat do you not understand🤨" Then I thought, 'my goodness stop being so stubborn, your body in it's simplicity is trying to take care of you!" I saw my arrogance at that moment as well. So now I am constantly telling everyone, listen to your body it is literally speaking to you! #health #wellness #selfcare #mindfulness #bodyawareness

    I feel the same, i get frustrated at myself for running through pain, i badly hurt one of my right calf muscles and my tendon from running, jogging and sprinting too long and running through pain instead of stopping when i hurt myself, i know the difference between good and bad pain so i know better. Now i cant run like i like to and i need to properly rest it and train around it which ive been doing, i never let things heal long enough propperly and i know better, so this injury needs 3 to 6 months to heal and i never done that first time around and hurt it again, so this time am doing it right way and letting it heal and training around it, i can still do cardio which doesn't involve running, i rested it 3 months, no running just training around it and doing my regular exercises, body weight and weights etc plus i still get cardio from that and by using cardio machines in gym which takes weight of my legs, like stair master and cross trainers and bikes etc. But few weeks ago being just over 3months since i hurt my calf again, i was walking back from work, and decided to slow jog home, 3 mile slow jog, and next morning it was sore again, so i know its serious injury. One of the times it went properly it caused me to instantly jump in air and off leg. So need to rest 6mth at least by looks of it this time and ill try a wee slow jog again, if it gets sore again next time by just slow jogging am gonna book an appointment with the doctors, few injuries am nursing i could get looked at while there at same time lol, time will tell 😎👍

    Your timing is impeccable. Had foot surgery with ankle fusion and tendon transplant some time ago. Recovery has been frustrating for me. I was humbled slipping on something from the bathroom and got hurt. This reminds me that "powering through" all the time is not good. The frustration comes and goes, yet rushing through the process is just going to lead to bad things down the line. Hope your recovery keeps rolling forth. 😊

    I just adore you! Your messages are such a gift! This is exactly what I needed to hear today. Experiencing many setbacks because my child has been chronically sick. (He’s going to be fine but it’s been challenging for about 6 weeks). Also, my 10 yr daughter broke her wrist taking her out of the game she loves. It’s been hard on her & I don’t always know how to help her deal. She’s just getting back in the game now & feeling a little trepidation. This idea of POST TRAUMATIC GROWTH is really cool.     Helpful. I've had to dial back quite a bit with a shoulder injury. PT alone hasn't helped much. Appt with ortho doc is soon. Just need to be patient, learn from it, and come back with bulletproof shoulders.

    Great video Ryan. Thanks to you I’ve been doing my best to apply Stoicism in my life for the last 8 years. I broke my left tibia a year ago snowboarding and had to have surgery. Stoicism helped me turn the time I was laid up into a positive rather then negative experience.

    Haven’t been gym and football for almost 2 yrs due to an injury and kyphosis. Kyphosis being a condition is what I found months later and is still a shock to me. It’s tough but I’m going to listen to this vid

    Such a good video! So timely for my current circumstances. I am a hiker not a runner and I have had issues with my feet for over a year. 1st ~ Morton’s neuroma in my right foot and I had surgery. Unfortunately it has grown back. 2nd ~ rolled my left foot while having a water battle in the yard. Unfortunately I had broken my left ankle a few years ago when hiking thru a cave in Pinnacles National Park. This time it is the ligament / tendon that runs on the outside of the foot. Physical Therapy didn’t heal it so I’ave had four shockwave treatments which seem to have worked. But wait still not walking. 3rd ~ in the middle of my shockwave treatments ~ I got a small rupture in my Achilles tendon where it attaches to the heel on my left foot. So back to Physical Therapy I go. I am freaking NOT GIVING UP. To keep exercising ~ I started swimming regularly. At my age of 58 years old ~ think swimming will continue to be part of my fitness plan. I had several big hikes on my bucket list and yes it will be disappointing if I never get to experience them but the daily walking with weekly hikes is more important. My challenge is not wallowing in self-pity.

    Physical training is a big part of keeping a sound mind. Sound mind, sound body. To me the mind and body are not separate. When you begin training it often takes a massive amount of discipline to get up each day. Jay Shetty has likened starting new habits to a jet plane taking off on a runway - the vast majority of the fuel is consumed on the take off. These early grueling days are the realm of the mind, you must push yourself to continue and push past the discomfort - at some point it becomes second nature. I call this the paradox of effort, the more effort you put in, paradoxically the less you put in later as it becomes second nature...and when you've conquered the goal...you fuel up the jet and head for the runway for higher climes. PS: love HOKAS and love that they are supporting you Ryan.

    I'm a stoic because I really care about being resilient and overcoming injury. That's my passion. I'm extremely passionate and excited about being stoic. I want to use stoicism to control the whole world. I deeply desire to use stoicism for that purpose. I've become a philosophical genius in a short period of time because of how nervous I was to not achieve that goal, and I did it through stoicism.

    I have foot pain since 7,5 years and suffering every day from my problem. But my problem is that nobody knows exactly what I have which makes it so much worse. I have to keep going even though there is not much hope left. 15 doctors and 5 operations couldn't help me but I am still alive and I really hope I will fight through this. Stoicism makes my days so much better. Thank you so much Ryan for that:)

    How do you do it? Constantly putting up with pain. In the last two months I've been in incredible pain, I've seen 7 doctors and no one knows why. Hopefully I'll see a specialist soon and he can help me. If he can't I'll be in pain forever. I'm so scared of this happening. I feel like ending my life. My sick pay will run out soon, I could lose my home. I know I'm focusing on all the negatives but I can't help it. How did you accept all your pain with no end to it? I'm 48yrs old and couldn't possibly go on like this. I'm sorry for bothering you with this but I just wondered how you do it.

    Thank you for this video. Im trying to recover from a partial thickness tear of a hip tendon from my femur bone since January this year and have been getting depressed as i cant do any activity other than basic physio exercises. Im going to try to trust in the physio process but its been 9 weeks. Would be interested in how others have healed this injury without surgery to reattach the tendon to my bone. In the uk it is really hard to get to secondary care in the nhs. Will try some of stoic techniques in meantime. 😊

    Use the bicycle. Ive just recovered from an achilles injury. Long dynamic warm ups and lots of bicycle. Give yourself months, not days. We are old! This is the new hard thing: TEMPERANCE

    As a Rodeo Athlete we were breaking an tearing crap all time. Was the norm. We looked at rest of world..even alot of other athletes as pussies. Never having to dig deep. Mentally always coming back so many times rest of life wad cake. Almost felt sorry the rest of world did not have to endevor to percevar learned at youngish age. Totally relate to this video.     Consider changing shoes…Hokusai are more prone to ankle rolling and serious ankle injury due to the heel height. Consider barefoot shoes so you can strengthen your feet and ankles:-) I love Peluvas for trails.

    Incorporate aqua jogging into your running routine. It will give you a break from the impact but continue to give you the cardio benefits. Good luck.

    When discipline becomes it’s own bad habit the mind has become mechanical, as JK says. That isn’t discipline, it’s conformity. Discipline isn’t freedom in that sense. The reason James Clear says it takes literally forever to create a habit isn’t just because we’re constantly maintaining the habit, it’s because freedom doesn’t come from rote behavior. We think freedom lies in programming our behavior, which isn’t true. That’s not freedom. True discipline is related to freedom. And true discipline is not in making ourselves programmed

    Quite the opposite of Hoka (which is ironic) take a look into barefoot shoes. All of the cushion and "support" from shoes can lead to many injuries, one of the most common being rolled ankles! If you run on an inch of foam under your foot your balance is off and its easier to roll your ankle. Try it! take your shoe off and attempt to roll your ankle then put some Hokas on and try! Night and Day

    @melarchuleta8886 I'd look a bit more into that. If your feet aren't conditioned, yes, it can damage your feet. However, before shoes existed, what do you think people did? You just need to strengthen your feet. And before you say it, yes, I know ultra hard surfaces didn't exist before shoes either.

    I think you're going in the wrong direction with these kinds of video's, the take away is deluded by the enormous focus on your own story. Instead of what the title of the video suggests. Where are the stoic tips for when you for example have an permanent injury. And not all injuries occur from not listening to your body or overtraining, sometimes it just happens. Hoe do you deal with your self image from a visible injury ect.

    My grandfather passed away yesterday, and today im back to running, my father is exercising and walking. We are putting stoicism into practice, espicially since its almost identical with our religion islam. Reading stillness is the key and obstacle is the way with meditations this year has made me ready for this exact very moment. I wasnt emotionless to this loss, i cried a lot. But thats not bad. I experience my emotions but i dont let it stop me, the opposite really. Its making me become much better than if i didnt experience this otherwise. Thank you ryan 🫶🏼🙏🏼
