The struggle to find and hold on to motivation isn’t new.
It’s comforting to think that even that long ago the emperor of Rome was giving himself a pep talk in order to summon up the willpower to throw the blankets off each morning and get out of bed. What makes it more impressive is that Marcus Aurelius didn’t have to do anything. That would have been one of the perks of being Emperor. He could have gotten other people to do everything for him. And he must have been tempted routinely to do so. Because we know that his physical health fluctuated. We know he had insomniatic tendencies. And we know he didn’t want to be Emperor. He wanted to be a philosopher.
Marcus motivated himself to not only do a job he didn’t particularly want to do, but to do it better than anyone had before or since.
How? What can we learn from Marcus and the Stoics he studied to help stoke our own motivation?
This video aims to answer those questions. It is rooted in ancient philosophy and designed to be applied in the modern world.

Yeah, even Marcus Aurelius said that "You could be good today, instead you choose tomorrow". This quote itself is very powerful. You cannot choose to be lazy after reflecting on this quote.

Video Idea:- Make a series of daily videos compiled in a playlist (just like your daily emails) that are focused on specific tasks. Like - 30 Days for beginners of stoicism. - 7 Days Motivation for beginners. With small videos targeted daily. Would be great to bring major habitual change with progress tracking though your videos.

In America, in different regions, there's different traditions, rituals, beliefs, etc. and not experiencing some of these personally, I'm learning something new Plus there's poetry, bios and historical stories I've learned a great deal. Journalling really is helpful. It sounded so stupid to me that writing down my thoughts would give me the power to change them, but having journaled consistently for about a year now, it really does help. Definitely agree w/ the part about adding distance between you and your thoughts. The whole skill of meta-cognition, thinking ABOUT your thoughts and whether or not they're useful or beneficial to you is so valuable. Appreciate your work Ryan! Can't wait for your next book!

I am new to Stoicism but I am beginning to embrace the philosophy. I struggled with worries about the future until I changed my outlook, I still worry sometimes (you can't change all at once overnight) but I worry a lot less. Now I don't know how to feel about the future and it leaves me feeling a bit lost. I don't know what I want from life and if I should want anything at all. I feel like I am lacking direction. How does a stoic approach the future? How do you know what you should or shouldn't do with your life?

What does a person, that's been working on these understanding, get out of a prison? A mental prison? A financial prison? A health prison? A toxic and home prison? You're actually stuck! It's hard to stay in a stoics mindset... When your need to get unstuck, BREAK FREE is tethered by these reason. To a familiar and miserable situation! Stuck! Now... I really want you do define what 'wasting time' means for you. I know quite some people that hate reading while beeing fairly successful. They see reading as a waste of time. Same with meditation. I myself educate teenagers and young adults in martial arts / kickboxing without me getting money. I do it for some other purpose. Some even say this is a waste of time. I would define 'wasting time' as someone taking an action, that does not make him any better, not on any level (social, personal and so on).

It was easy for Marcus Aurelius to philosophize, about his role in the world.. What's surrounded by, legions of soldiers. And hordes of associates and advisors. We are animals. Animals come with three basic instincts. Eat, sleep, and procreate. We are the only animal on this planet that can teach ourselves to deny, all three of those instincts. Make a beast of yourself. Spare yourself the burden of being a man.
