In the 80s, I worked as a bouncer in a blues club in Memphis. My mother in law at the time came up to me and said, "I have someone who wants to meet you.". Standing in front of me was a man with wearing a poncho reaching out to shake my hand. I was star struck to be in front of one of my heroes, Stevie Ray Vaughan. A few weeks later, I was working the floor at the club and there was a tap on my shoulder. Holy cow it was him again but this time he called me by name. "Joe, we are jamming after the club closes. I want you to sit in with us.". I didn't leave the club until 7 a.m. and got to sit and jam with the man himself. Your reaction to a genuine man like Stevie is beautiful. What you see in this video is 💯 him. A few short months later, I found out about his death and was heartbroken. We lost a legendary man but his soul lives on through people like you. Thank you for this video ❤

"Heavy strings". That is an understatement. His grip strength had to have been off the charts. I've watched other players on YT try to use the same gauge strings that Stevie played so effortlessly and they failed miserably
And that, was the greatest guitarist who ever lived. Gone way too soon 😞

I don't know if you noticed, but he started the song playing a red guitar. He went to tune it and signaled to his tech to get him another. He never missed a note in the change. No one else could do an instrument change mid-song and no miss a beat. SRV was one of a kind. Thank you Stevie, for all the great music you left us to enjoy. And thank you, Maddie, for the reaction.

There is another reason why he changes guitar and specifically for the one that is Charley, this song was written for the person who made that guitar (Charley Wirz) and who unfortunately passed away and was a friend of Stevie, the song was recorded with that guitar and live always play this song with that specific guitar

This concert was from after he got clean and sober. He had 4 years clean when he died in a helicopter crash and he absolutely had a great message to share. I'm just grateful that he left a legacy of some exceptional music for me and others to enjoy and guys like me and others like John Mayer who are a million times better guitarists than I will ever be to learn from and enjoy.

The guitar technique you asked about early in the video is often called a "rake." You analysis is spot on. This man was all heart, and you feel it in everything he does. He was too good for this world.
If you want to experience SRV's most radical playing, watch him play "Third Stone From the Sun" live at the Mocambo. It's his homage to Jimi Hendrix. And as someone who saw him perform in 1987, I enjoy watching folks see SRV for the first time. I get to live vicariously through your experience.

When Stevie played live, he just exuded all the confidence in the world. He went on stage just KNOWING THAT EVERYTHING WAS RIGHT WITH EVERYTHING & NOTHING COULD GO WRONG! The thought that anything could go wrong during his performance never crossed his mind! I believe his fashion sense & what he wore also clearly says the same thing! It's not like he 'DRESSED UP', or had 'on stage costumes', These were his everyday clothes! He dressed like this literally EVERYDAY! And whether he tossed his guitar behind his back or behind his head, played with his teeth or his fingers, played lead & rhythm at the same time (on the same guitar), or played right hand only or played left hand only, he didn't have to practice these 'MOVES' before hand, the thoughts just came to him, then he was doing them! EXPERTLY!!! EVERY TIME!!!! JUST FABULOUS!!!! THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LIKE STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN!!!💜💜💜💜 R. I. P. WE ALL LOVE YOU & MISS YOU DEEPLY!!!!

Thanks for your reaction here, Maddy. I'm glad you found this guy. Stevie Ray Vaughn (aka SRV) called himself "an outlaw from south Dallas". Thank you for transporting me back to a small theater in 1984 and letting me relive my night there. His first album had just been released and "Pride and Joy" was just starting to get airplay on radio. I can still remember making eye contact with others in the audience, and I'm sure our facial expressions matched yours. We knew we were in the presence of greatness - no, something beyond that. It sounds like a cliche or really cheesy, but I was still riding a music high hours later. Many years have passed and I've seen hundreds of shows and artists, but nothing topped that night. Maybe three or four other shows might compare, but none have surpassed it. I truly feel blessed that I was there.

Stevie sadly passed in a helicopter crash just 7 years into his mainstream career. He is usually always in the top 5 guitarist conversation. which is extremely impressive for such a short career. He was a once in a lifetime guitarist and overall, a kind soul. He used to play upwards of 16 hours a day, and superglue is fingers back together when they started bleeding! The main cause of the bleeding being that he played some of the heaviest strings available, which isn't that baffling to a non guitarist, but to a guitarist, it is absolutely incredible the way he bent them. And, the craziest of all from a guitarist standpoint is that he knew hardly any music theory... The solos you heard coming from the guitar were different every time and entirely made up on the spot every time, without much music theory to guide him. It makes no damn sense how good he was. Now, Guitarists have always tried to replicate Stevie's playing ever since he popped out of the Texas blues scene, and no one, and I mean NO ONE, has ever replicated his playing. There is something in his fingers that only a very few select amount of humans have ever had, and whatever it is, it is not an aquired skill, you're born with it, and if Stevie had not sadly passed so early into his career... Everyone would know the name Stevie Ray Vaughan..... Next reaction has to be "Texas Flood" it is by far his most impressive performance.
Welcome to the srv experience!! So many great performances, anything from the live at El macambo show is phenomenal!!

That technique is called a rake. You drag the pick down the strings while muting them then unmute on the last string/note. The other thing is called call and response. Quite common in rock and blues. You play or sing something and then you (or someone else) plays something in response.

Notice that he started out with an orange guitar. Then he was playing the white guitar. The guitar tech came in and changed the guitar without Stevie losing a beat in the song. And when he kept going back and forth from the amplifiers, it's because the sounds were set for the orange guitar. Now he has to make the adjustments for the white guitar. He's a perfectionist.

His big strong hands and very thick guitar strings was part of it, but his ability to move around on the strings and make them bend to his will is unique in this world (yes, in the entire world, just one SRV). Loved your video Maddy, Love SRV.

I really can't see it he's a legend for sure but I'm pretty sure Jason Becker could play circle's around him
Seamlessly switches guitars🎸 then proceeds to give a life message to all of humanity, then through his pure passion looses a tooth, spitting it out while never missing his soul gripping sounds whaling from his guitar. Truly beautiful to see 🍃
Never gets old...That guitar change.🤙🏾 ...Don't know how many times I've watched this. #foreverSRV
Duetting is a way to put it. His guitar always responds to the vocals. This is my all time favorite live performance. kzread.info/dash/bejne/c3uE2o-em9TAddI.html

Stevie changed my life forever! ❤ i will forever be grateful for his love for the blues. He gave his life to the music he loved... he was a beautiful person and a angel that had too short of a visit on earth ❤️ i am a 24 year old blues musician and i am about to release my first album next month. In January i will be heading to Memphis Tennessee to compete in the International Blues Challenge with my band! The competitors will be from all around the world. Theres nothing i want more in my life than to be able to make people happy through the music i love to play ❤️ Stevie Ray Vaughan is one of the most important pieces of my story. Keep listening to him please, read about his story, you would love it.Thanks for doing such a great review i really enjoyed this, i always shed so many tears on this tune. God Bless and ~ Soul To Soul ~

Hi bud, That is awesome. Good Luck! My brother Rob and his band, Delta Knights Band competed in the first Road to Memphis Blues Competition representing our state of Maine back in 1996. They didn't win the national but hey, they did great to get there. They still do "functions". His newest band project is made up of 2 guys he went to HS and played with then called Unfinished Blues Band. My brother is the guitarist and singer. Good luck again. Tom
Hello, Maddy.. A late response to your question but that technique at 2:05 That is called a ghost note but aka dead note, or silent note, muted note. You were absolutely spot-on with the assumption in John Mayer finding inspiration in SRV as well. RIP Mr. Vaughan. An inspiration to many!
Proponuje posłuchać " tin pan valley". Mój ulubiony blues.

@@diltberg9627 Jeff Haley was definitely an awesome player, I've seen him several times before he passed, I saw Stevie Rae twice right after Texas flood and then again on the tour he passed away on. Healy was awesome, Stevie Ray came from another planet.
Yea, I saw him live once in Dallas. 1983 or 84, I was 17 and he opened for the Moody Blues. I’d never heard of him, I think he was fresh off of playing for David Bowie, anyway, my friend said gimme a ride to the Moody Blues and I’ll give you a ticked. I thought cool he had 8th row near center. My friend read the Marquee and said who’s this Stevie Ray Vaughan guy and I said I don’t know just an opening act. Back in those days you could smoke a joint. We did and he had really good stuff, I was laughing my ass off cause my friend was a very funny guy and looked funny. The lights turned off and my friend was still talking, SRV and Double Trouble came on stage and starting playing within 30 seconds of SRV playing I told my friend listen to this guy he’s one of the greatest guitar players I ever heard. Truly!
SRV is the greatest.

HE'S BIGGEST , There will never be anything like this again. SRV RIP , deep in my heart i can hear what You are tryed to tell us . He was a wizard on the guitar . He went to heaven too soon , to jam with Jimi ... listened by Angels of the first degree
Within the first minute of hearing SRV I felt like if I had the knowledge to create a perfect style for me that is what it would sound like. It was perfection. I had been a huge fan of a lot of blues and rock guitar players but this was the embodiment of them all. I was there in Alpine Valley the show before his last and it was mind blowing. I have a cd of that show that was recorded off the soundboard. I don't listen to SRV as much as I used to because it always makes me a little sad. I still listen to him with a tear in my eye. We were robbed of the very best of what a sober SRV was going to do. I felt like once he was sober he was going to light up the world with his talents. I feel that besides his obvious talents SRV knew what sounded good. His covers took those songs to another level. He would have been awesome in the studio helping other musicians to max their talents if he chose to do so.
Amazing...absolutely amazing. RIP SRV.
Really nice reaction to this amazing man and master guitarist. Stevie had recently got himself cleaned up and had a new outlook on life. Lost him when he was in his prime. Some of his lyrics on songs like "Tightrope", "Crossfire", "Wall Of Denial" are an expression of that message. RIP Mr. Vaughan.
