I saw him once in the 80's at a theater-in-the-round with a rotating stage. A few minutes into the act, the venue started the stage rotating. He said in his dry tone, "whoa ... cut that out." They apparently though he was kidding so they kept the stage rotating. He said, "no really" and when they didn't turn it off, he just said "ok, fine", sat down on the rolling office chair, and held the corded microphone like a water-skiier, and just let the stage rotate underneath him.

Funny, I was going to say they should rotate the audience instead of the stage since that would be better for the performers and then I remembered that that was the way that you make the statute of liberty disappear, you rotate the audience and the stage together while the curtain is blocking the view of the statute...

it hurt me how brilliant that was. to flip the problem upside down like that and show a different solution. It was a visualization of how his jokes work and an important lesson for us all about checking our assumptions when considering possible solutions. It reminded me a bit of the scene in MIB where the agents are being tested and only Will Smith's character things to pull the table up so he fill out the test. To be willing to adjusting the environment. My daughter has that. I never did because I hate imposing on anybody.

If A-list stand-up comics were classic cartoon characters Steven Wright is Droopy. Perfect!
At one end of the comedy spectrum we have Steven Wright. At the other end would've been Chris Farley. It's quite astonishing that there's such a wide range of comedic styles that make us laugh.

Of all of the comedians in the world who do It like he does, he's my favorite. His chairlift joke is one that I'll never forget. I was in prison for 11 years wanna know why? I pushed a total stranger out of a chairlift. I Remember You!
He ALMOST BROKE after the "What a nice night for a evening."
I love the way he can just bounce from one random ridiculous statement to another. No segue, no transition, just nonsense. So few comedians can do that.
One of the top 10 stand- up comics of all time.
that thing he did with the glass! OMG GENIUS !
I had to report my shadow for stalking me.
Saw live at The Improv - Manhattan, NY ‘84 or ‘85!! Couldn’t stop laughing!!
He and Mitch Hedburg revived the Vaudeville tradition of the one-liners - which Henny Youngman personified. But Wright and Hedburg added a twist: the one-liners underscored the absurd nature of reality, often through the use of puns and clever wordplay.

Loved Hedgeberg. Left us too soon.
Mostly one liners! A special talent for sure. Maybe the most literal comedy I have seen.
I just realized that with every joke there's a setup and a payoff. With Steven both the setup and the payoff are a joke.
what a nice night for an evening
My first apartment was this one bedroom place where my first wife and I lived until we could save up for a house. It was a slump Block home, but the sound proofing was pretty good everywhere except the the walk in closet in the bedroom. The closet was huge. Almost a second bedroom huge. One night I was getting ready to go out and the up stairs neighbors were getting as well. The wife asked her husband, doe you like the blue dress or the red dress. I said loudly, I like the red dress. They moved out the next week.
I once went on a trip and bought a postcard to send back to my girlfriend. The postcard said “wish you were here.” The picture was of the Earth.
The king of one liners
He is well known amongst the greats of stand up comedy....and amongst stand up fans.... he just doesn't perform often anymore.
George Carlin set us all straight and Steven Wright got us lost again.

Beyond brilliant.
In Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Pee Wee mentions a dream of a snake wearing a vest.
"I love reminiscing with total strangers." LMFAO!!
King of One-Liners!
"At night when I went to bed my father told me 'Snakes don't have arms - that's why they don't wear vests.'" This explains a lot.
Seems like some of the things he says you have to think about it for awhile before it sinks in.
