Steven Lawson: The Evangelistic Zeal of George Whitefield

In this session, Dr. Steven J. Lawson introduces us to George Whitefield, a man whose extraordinary evangelistic fervor was marked by remarkable piety and deep theology, and whose unswerving devotion to his God led him to risk all that he had to preach the name of Christ.

It was said that Whitfield would weep as he pleaded for sinners to come to Christ! Oh that we had preachers like this today 🙏🏻

Paul Washer's "Shocking youth message" that can be found on youtube from 2001 is the closest we have gotten to Whitefield's fire. He is the only preacher I have ever watched cry for my generation to wake up.

How many times did I cry listening to this? Too many! It's my belief that Whitfield was an amazing instrument of God during America's birth. I'll say it, I believe God used our forefathers for their signatures only. These were all men who called upon the name of God but rejected the name of Christ. Like always, here comes God speaking through Whitfield and it just brings in throngs of masses. God's plan will always prevail and I believe in revelation we will see there was a lot going on here spiritually where God had to become involved. In the movie the gladiator the general says something like. "Rome in its infancy was so fragile even a whisper could knock her over." I believe America in its infancy was so fragile over spiritual warfare, without the intervention of God through the Holy Spirit who dwelt in men, we would of been a more degenerate place during this time. In our infancy we needed the tender care of Jesus. Now that we are grown, we think we know what's best and it's led our country down a road leading to judgement.

Excellent talk. Blessed by it! It's hard to argue with the contention that Whitefield is the greatest preacher since the apostles. One who possibly came close was John Sung, the great Chinese preacher of the 1920s to 1940s, who also preached with great fervour & effect.

If someone had the evangelistic zeal of a person like George Whitfield today there would be a conference with people that pick apart everything he says and criticized and books written to criticize him . These same people would tell others that he never preached anything to influence theology.

Great message, as usual from Dr. Lawson. One comment about his earlier You Tube sermon on Whitefield several years ago, with comments disabled. Most likely this has long been corrected, but the word "Gloucester" is most likely easy for the Englishman, but is also easy to pronounce incorrectly by others (including me years ago, when I was corrected). The first syllable is like "claw" and the first "e" is not pronounced: "Glaw-ster."

I so greatly admire Lawson's passion and preaching. That said, however, I find somewhat strained or perhaps undermining how he always presses continually Calvinism's predestination. I just don't see predestination the way Calvinists preach it. I say that in light of what Peter wrote: that God predestined us according to His foreknowledge. That said, I greatly admire Rev. Lawson's uncompromising championship for the cross and Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I as well find it encouraging to hear about a man who was given to God, but this doesn't mean that he had everything right. If this man taught that repentance and faith are impossible for the sinner, doesn't that sound like its making a work out of it? Romans 10 says that Faith comes from the heart, not something injected by God. It's the simplest thing that our loving God could ask of us. Please, do not remove the very important R that the Bible clearly lays out...Responsibility of the sinner!

In the Lord's time Whitefield had a special ministry preaching, not in the streets, but in parks and fields. We are in different days. We may well preach in the streets but we are not having the same effect as people are not gathering to listen. We need now to pray that there would be another such revival. We cannot manufacture it. But when the time comes then people will hear and they will believe and they will repent.
