00:01 Focus on the pain and struggle to align with what you can accomplish. 01:27 Discipline equals the importance of the goal and psychological enjoyment minus the psychological cost. 02:46 Health is the first priority for everything I love and care about. 04:05 Discipline is the key to effective time management and life choices. 05:23 Discipline equation is crucial for staying on track 06:40 Discipline equation: behavior will occur if positive outcome minus friction exceeds zero. 07:56 Many people are driven by pain rather than pleasure. 09:21 Deep shame and insecurity drove me to obsessiveness. if useful for you , than like my comment

I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes discipline lately, or more precisely, what makes us do stuff. I think there is an extra factor in that equation, and it’s something like your ability to ignore/repress/overcome friction, it detracts from that feeling of friction by making it less potent. Let's call it willpower. So the equation would be something like Discipline = Goal Importance + Pursuit pleasure - ( Pursuit pain - Willpower ). This is a factor that can be trained over time. What do you think?

So great to see you guys have a conversation to get questions asked so well to frame for Steve's takeaways from his interviews. Such a great communication between you both. Thanks to you both.
Thank you Chris. You, Steven, Peterson, Huberman and Jocko have made such a powerful contribution to humanity by making such valuable content available for free. You've all changed my life, and continue doing so, by sharing these mindful episodes where deep, critical thinking and knowledge are shared as if you're just at the pub. The world's your pub now, and I hope I'm one day able to buy you a beer sometime.

Thanks. Some people are already in a bunch of pain, usually because of stuff that happened before they even had a chance to get proactive. That means anyone with any sort of health and cultural capital needs to listen to this and help others. Why? You’ll feel proud of yourself and it’s the right thing to do. Cheers!! Stay compassionate.

The discipline equation discussed here is a powerful way to understand how our behaviors are influenced. It's all about balancing the importance of a goal, the psychological enjoyment we derive from pursuing it, and the psychological cost. This equation, as explained by Stephen, can apply to various aspects of our lives, from fitness to creative pursuits. It's a reminder that discipline often involves finding the right balance between these factors. Just as Mark Manson's quote highlights, it's crucial to consider what pain we're willing to endure in our pursuit of meaningful goals. This insight from Stephen resonates with me and echoes the teachings of @LisaHaisha, who emphasizes the importance of self-discovery and self-acceptance in our journey to live authentically and purposefully.

One of the best clips I’ve ever watched. I’d encourage everyone to use the matrix to assess different examples in your own life and then it will become clear why you’re not doing something. Then if you want to start doing it you have to address the 3 parts and make them easier/more enjoyable/ less costly.
Two of my favorite people right here. So looking forward to the full episode. Keep after it, wise sirs.

Love the equasion variables! One thing I would consider is instead of adding and subtracting, maybe you could use multiplying and dividing. That way the total effect is more compounding than linear, which seems like it could be the case.

Came to say this exact thing. Still the principle holds! It could be discipline = (importance * enjoyment)/friction
I am a 66 y.o man who has lived a comfortable life and never had discipline or purpose that has been worth anything. After watching Steve's views on discipline, it has given me a different perspective and I'll be watching the full version of the interview, buying the book and looking at what I can do to add both discipline and value to what's left of my life. Thanks for the insight
7:48 ... You just described the moment when an elite athlete starts to self-question whether to continue ... when the "friction" starts to increase, and the "desire/reward" quotient wavers. Such is the case in all industries, fields and professions.

This was excellent and so true
Chip on my shoulder because of being called stupid by my family and husband…. drove me to get my Masters and then a PhD. That was to prove to myself that I was OK. They tried to discourage me but I kept going. Driven. Left them in my dust. I was never the problem, they were. Revenge is a dish best served cold. I won.

good BUT you have to realize that they don't care. so if it works for you, cool but you're the one having the experience so do it for yourself ONLY. There is no 'revenge'. their comments were throwaway. they won't come to worship you for proving them wrong. You can use their disses for motivation but only insofar as you find what YOU want to do for your own reasons and enjoyment. because that magical day where they say "oh we were so wrong about you" will never come and if that's the only thing that is keeping you doing what you're doing, that is a thin reason, a house of cards

I like the sound of that equation, I'm going to apply to some personal aspects and see where it takes me. I wouldn't want to say I've been in a rut for a little bit, but I've recently got into a hamster wheel, so maybe it'll help with some sort of direction... something you've shown discipline in: 1. how much it matters - /10 2. enjoyment from the pursuit - /10 3. amount of friction involved - /10 (1+2)-3=

Does it start as you loving the goal & its journey (no matter the sacrifice), then in time you ultimately loving the outcomes of the goal more... & doing the prev. steps to maintain the goal knowing they are obligatory, so less loved.

I really connect to where Steven realised all the time management techniques were pointless without a core issue being addressed that facilities them all. I’ve come to the realisation that no amount of techniques for taking action and pursuing what you want to pursue are going to work if you don’t see a point to your self and life. If you perceive yourself as being utterly pointless, you will never see the point in any atomic habit, building and executing any routine, because the foundation is missing and it’s all inherently pointless. Your view of yourself has to be that you, and therefore improving you, are worth it and will mean anything in the world

But ultimately that (at least for me) is the BIGGEST cause for a lack of self discipline-the why. Why is this important? Why does this benefit me? Why should I keep enduring discomfort to achieve this? It is easy to say that exercise, eating healthy, saving for retirement, et cetera all will benefit you a few months or, a few years in the future but, THAT'S THE PROBLEM! All those benefits will not immediately be seen and humans need to experience immediately rewards and validations to continue to do something; especially something uncomfortable.
@Sully_one
8 ай бұрын
@@333angeleyesSo here the why is the regret that you will feel after years of neglecting that part because it didn't give you short term reward. Which is one of the biggest pains you can experience in your life, regret. Knowing that you could have been so much, but you were too "lazy" & "unmotivated" to become it. Life is very comfortable in the modern time, the exact reason why we have so many depressed and sad people Because they held on to their comfort for so long, that over time they don't have anything going on in their life. Nothing to persue, nothing to wake up excited for, shameful to look at themselves in the mirror Pick your hard. Do it now because that's the only time that you get to choose.
The profound message in this podcast should not be underestimated. Fucking go get yours!!!

I think the discipline of enduring the grind you choose is very different, but no more admirable or remarkable, that the grind and pain imposed upon one because of circumstance.

I agree the what is accomplished is equally impressive. However if you are driven by negative emotion then your why may not be ultimately conducive to long term mental and physical health.
U are a true grit pair of jen say ot as it is wich is honestly driving .
We do this risk reward assessment subconsciously all the time. Going back it would be "how important is it that I get to this honey in order not to starve" vs "how many bee stings am I willing to take for it". That decision would have been made almost instantly. Now days, I'm guessing none of the viewers are starving and bee stings are quite abstract.
Wow, really interesting episode. I would even add social conformity (+) or social resistance (-) could be added to the discipline equation. Social pressure is a powerful extrinsic force in its own right. Like if you agree.
Surreal interview since these are basically the same guy.
Something is missing from the discipline equation, which is the perceived ability to achieve the desired goal: your sense of hope and the belief that the pursuit ultimately will be fruitful.
Im convinced Steven and Chris are the same person in a Parallel universe.

Chris is an admirable man. Steven is not.
It's about pain reallocation. Imagine a box: On one side you have the pain associated with hard work, discipline, training, commitment... On the other side you have the pain associated with sucking, laziness, not living up to your potential. The bar can move towards either side but it's not about getting rid of pain, but about how much of each kind of pain are you willing to take.
The "pain" argument is not transferable nor a static framework. If ever you want to consider using it, it has to be dynamic. Pain or resilience thresholds are different for many people. And they benefit and hinder different aspects. We complicate sh*t way to much. If you honestly believe/know that, it must/should be done or that you need/want it, you'll actually do it. Using the rubbish bin example; if you do not want to sit in a house of sh*t and disgust, then you will clean your f-ing house. You also know, it needs to be done otherwise x,y,z cost will be incurred.
And then there's David Goggins lmao, friction is 10/10 for him, enjoyment? Wtf is that! Running miles at 3 am saying, "they don't know me son" 😂 nobody can inspire me more than Goggins! ❤

Dopamine - Limbic Friction Motivation is the initial dopaminergic indicator for pursuit. Pleasure from pursuing a task is the continuous outflow of dopamine. Limbic friction is just a word used for the hump of commencing a task.
@JoshKings-tr2vc

I like how he philosophically organized it. (Big Why)+(Enjoyment; which I would say is correlated with Big Why)-(Resistance). Meaning, underlying all this, Nietzsche’s quote stands true: “with a large enough why, a man can endure any how.”
@JoshKings-tr2vc
2 ай бұрын
Also explains why most people who are worse off strive to be better. Their why is much more painful than other people’s. That’s when they got their lows and strive to go further. And pain will biologically stick to memory harder than pleasure.
This is a familiar message. My question is how does one increase your why? At times, it feels like I am unable to increase my why and keep it high. I've learned how to reduce friction, but not increase why.
