Steve Reviews: Pinocchio and The Emperor of The Night
Фильм және анимация
As by popular request in the comments section and Patreon, this week we shall be reviewing Pinocchio and The Emperor of The Night. Produced by Filmation, it takes place a year after Pinocchio has become a real boy, but things are far from perfect, as we'll see in this very dark, and very weird take on the classic Fairytale...

Yes, twice she alluded to someone that might do this, and twice she backed away when asked what was meant. First, at his birthday, and secondly when she rescues him. She alluded to a "master" being angry. In other words, there is someone immeasurably worse than Puppetino, but she refuses to tell Pinoke whom that is. If she had, he might have gone home to safety.

Fun fact, original book was supposed to be way shorter with a really sad ending. The blue fairy from the book was actually supposed to be a dead girl and Pinocchio was supposed to die from getting hung by the cat and the fox. Carlo Collodi was told the book needed to be longer so he changed it.

Actually, someone made a long video “debunking” how technically Disney didn’t copy Kimba, you should check it out. I believe it was done by Your Movie Sucks. I used to believe it was plagiarism as well but that video has an in-depth search
@SlapstickGenius23

YMS found differences in a series that ran for 52 episodes, plus multiple movies vs an adaption based around Hamlet and Kimba that was only 1 hour and 29 minutes long. The LK animators had Kimba merch in their office, the voice actor for Simba made a mistake and called Simba, Kimba instead, and the producer said they got inspiration from it. No one is saying it's an exact replica only that Kimba is one of their sources for Lion King. I watched that 2 hour plus video and most of it consisted of nitpicking but I find it strange because he went on for a long time everyone takes it as fact, he never watched the original Japanese adaption of Kimba and blatantly says he doesn't like it. It was a back and forth exchange mind you because Osamu Tezuka was inspired by western animation and Disney's Snow White. Basically what I'm trying to say is there's no such thing as an original idea.

7:35 I really like this scene. Many (most) of these old fairy tales have very dark scenes meant to scare children into being good. The reason these seem "out of place" is because you're used to Disney's sanitized, watered-down version of these timeless stories. (It was also really great voice-acting on the part from Pinocchio.)

06:40 since the movie is supposed to follow the book, Pinocchio never encountered evil pupeteers like Stromboli before. The puppet master he meets (whose name is Manggiafuocco, not sure about the spelling but his name is essentially Italian for "eats fire") is instead very kind and lets him go back home after the show, even giving him money for his "father" IIRC.

After you watch Young Frankenstein, you can never say it the same way again. 😂 You just can’t.
There is another creepy cartoon adaptation of Pinnocchio which is called ,,Kashi no ki mokku". There were plenty of psychodelic and scary scenes: -pinnochio who was told to get a real heart so he could become a real boy, sneaks to his classmate's house in the night and wants to get his heart in his sleep with help of a chisel; -cricket who was first smashed by hammer was shown dying in agony with his eyesbulging and rolling a foam from his mounth; -pinnochio's classmates are shown being bitten to death by wolves (there was even a bit of blood shown); -pinnochio's having a nightmare about being crucified and burned by some fire demons. All those scenes were cut in american version and on yt there's only italian version available with those scenes (called Le nuove avventure di Pinocchio).

14:02 Yorkshire puddings are like little rolls/muffins. They're also light and airy, not thick. Whoever wrote that line probably knew "Yorkshire Pudding" was an English dish but assumed it was the thick, liquidy sort of pudding and didn't bother to look it up.

On the point of "Igor," reminds me of an unforgettable and quintessential bit of comedic cinema that totally deserves a review. Young Frankenstein, dir: Mel Brooks. Once you hear it, you'll never unhear it and it'll bring lil pings of joy every time you remember
On a lighter note, Puppetino got turned into a puppet and died. That's a win in my book
I Loved the scene from when the wind blows xD especially since I watched the review of that recently. Hearing an old guy say it like that just makes these words so much more... Insulting? XD

Random question, but i make kinda a 'Poll', cause i wanna know: How many know 'Hbomberguy' and 'Sci Man Dan'? Means for you, the question is: Do you know them?
*The message of this movie was to not let anyone take your freedom away from you. And to be smart around/avoid vices and strangers, so also self-accountability. It was a good lesson.* This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I even named a pet after Twinkle. You know, you can say what you want about these older cartoons, but they really *did* put the fear of talking to strangers into kids of that era. I miss the shows that, while still being clean in a media sense, weren't afraid to make some jokes kids would only get when they were older, and certainly weren't afraid to scare kids a little when trying to get a message across, because these same shows also respected the budding intelligence of their audience. They also took into mind that parents might watch the shows with their kids.
10:37 *WHY DOES THE TOAD HAVE NAILS?*
The amount of american dad and family guy jokes lmao
The Emperor of the Night looks exactly like Mephisto, from Marvel Comics, especially seen from behind.
To be fair, Twinkle did try to warn him about the stuff that was going on at the party area
The beginning is just like the Puppet from FNaF : a child is lured to an unseen place : a purple guy makes the child lifeless : the child turns into a Puppet

You should also cover the 1996 live-action Pinnochio movie. It definitely fits the same categories as this movie: incredibly weird, incredibly dark, but with some good puppetry effects (not for the CGI though), costumes, and performances despite major script issues. Brian May also did a lot of work on the soundtrack as well. I remember seeing that movie as a 10 year old and being like WTF was that when I came out of the theater. This movie sadly I never encountered on VHS or DVD despite hearing of its existence.

Oh this is hitting some deep, possibly repressed memories of having watched this as a kid now. It’s like having that epiphany moment where you realize where your nightmares came from.
I remember the scene with the puppeteer scared the living shit out of me as a kid. The music. All the other dolls you know was (probably) once a live too. And of course the puppeteer himself. Witch alway gave me serious predictor vipes...

Scott Grimes also will be appearing in Redlettermedia's production of "Critters 5: Critters Bite Back". ;]
Marionettes were also all alive and sentient in the source. Possibly all carved from trees from the same forest. All kinds of fantastical things happen with no explanation, and it's all treated as mundane, living marionettes included.
Pinnochio went SUPER-SAIYAN. His power's over 9000!
I'd just like to mention that the editing in this episode is particularly funny and clever.
7:17 And I just remembered I had a repressed memory of this movie. We borrowed a couple tapes from my grandparents. One of them was the anime Thumbelina and the other was this. And it SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME. I had vague memories of the footage up to THIS point in the video and now I remember everything about it.
Hearing Mary’s theme during the puppet scene adds an layer of sadness

Thank you posting this!!! I sent years trying to think of this movie. I knew I saw a sequel as a kid and thought I was crazy!
Steve, I love your reviews. It's so rare to find a reviewer who doesn't constantly shriek and yell (Phaelous), doesn't add annoying skits (NC) and doesn't have tons of deafening edits ( Caddicarus). You also do so much more than most reviewers, who basically just drag out summarizing the plot of a film without adding anything substantial. You're so normal, yet so one of a kind. This reviewing style is downright perfect. Thanks for what you do.
