I have the same thing. I have good days and then something in my head tells me, somehow. I fucked up and i should never open my mouth again, i hide and hate myself

My Mums band were on Crass's record label. If you want to hear her song just search, it's on KZread. Conflict - I've had enough I think she was 20 when it came out, She's 65 now. My Dad wrote the lyrics but he's sadly not with us anymore.

@@GraemeSmith-kd5eb Thanks mate. I'm with her now, just showed her your message and she appreciates it. I'll tell you a quick funny story. All the time I was growing up and someone would ask her why she left Conflict, she'd always say it was because of me, she wanted to focus raising her son. I wouldn't say I felt guilty, but I did wonder if she had any resentment towards me. When MySpace was about I was talking to Colin Jerwood (the other singer) and mentioned her leaving to take care of me and his response was "we sacked her for not showing up to rehearsals, plus that was before my mum was even pregnant" then she denied ever saying it in the first place😂 My Dad was in a band as well, they were very short lived, around 77-79ish. They were called: The Pitiful. He was the Bass player. They have a live recording from a pub in Lewisham. ⚠️WARNING⚠️ they are pretty awful, but if you want to hear them they were on Spotify. @@ModTrash yeah it was. He died over ten years ago. My mum hadn't seen him for years but she went to his funeral at Falconwood cemetery.

CRASS fan since age 15 - I'm 41 now and I STILL LOVE THEM! Legit listen to CRASS every few months for the past 20 years. It'll never die. Believe in the ruins.

Hi Steve I've suffered with Depression for years I had a real bad bout of it a few years ago . I now use meditation I meditate daily it's changed my life but it takes time I will never be free from depression but I've learnt to go with it through meditation.

This is a good interview. I like that Erin doesn't brush over the subject of depression and asks about it when Steve initially mentions it. It is too easy to say we are well when sometimes we aren't.

Thank you so much! It was a hard call to make because Steve did not mention that until the cameras were rolling so I was honestly a bit surprised but wanted to be sensitive to what he was going through & really appreciated how he still showed up to film this with me despite not feeling his best!

Great interview, I'm going through a lot of anxiety & depression myself at the moment so was hard to watch because you can tell he's not his full confident self. Helps me to hear about how other people handle it and that it can happen to anyone.

Well said Steve I’ve suffered since age 14 and have regularly self(ishly) medicated currently on a monitored program of prescribed ( this time ) drugs and am going ok ( I think not drinking much and holding down a job successfully) stay strong fella

God bless you Steve. You were always upfront and honest. You helped change my life.

I get it. I definitely feel outta touch with the youth of today... not the band of course.. But it does make me think about back in the late 80s, early 90s.. did a portion of the OG punkers who came up with Amebix or GBH feel out of touch when hare-krishna acts like CRO-MAGS or Youth of Today were changing the scene? Of course the bullshit going on today, with these 'barbie-punks' is ridiculous... very different from the Wendy O Williams or even Debbie Harry of our era... These people have a vacancy sign where their brain should be.

@@Necrobot777 seriously. Scenes always change and get exploited and sold off. But crass walked the walk. I literally tried to live off grid because of them. Now it was too much work and when I got married and had kids it wasn’t in the cards anymore. But they inspired and grew the minds of millions. It’s just crazy how it all evolved. When I see rebellion fest highlights of thousands of people all wear the exact same thing, doing the punk walk lol. It’s less about any messages and more about social climbing now. I remember punk shows were not all inclusive. It was a place where outcasts and abused kids could go but outcast and abused kids had issues. There were fights and disagreements ( early 90s) but that’s also another form punk took before rancid. I imagined crass would be equivalent to Jesus throwing tables and whipping people because they monetized off the word of god. Like while we we’re gone corporate trend setters marketed an idea and Eric miclow is the product. Steve should be turning up tables. But if he’s not mad why should I be.

Intelligent and heartfelt the man is.

I’ve never commented on KZread until now … in reference to the ‘great interview’ comments … it’s a great interview because Steve is great , he’s honest and candid and extremely brave , to open up in public about his challenges takes guts !! Depression is no joke and for punk rock Barbie to compare a serious mental illness with her feeling a bit fed up after Rebellion because she can’t play dress up until the next video shows an inexcusable lack of understanding , never mind any kind of real empathy … it’s not all about you Erin … “punk became a fashion…” never rang so true

Steve and some of us old crowd should get together sometime for a bit of a sing-song. Maybe a cuppa afterwards.

Thank you Steve for your candidness and thanks Erin for the sensitive interviewing. This was a much more useful interview than a lot of music interviews cos a lot of people will relate to the start of it and that is really positive when so many people are going through the shit at the moment

Not really. I've made as much peace with what happened as much as I can and am moving forward from it. Bands still play that festival and when I ask them what they have coming up, it comes up. It would be childish to still be salty to the point of "no mention of it" so many years later.

Respect to Steve for giving it how He is and I wish him well. Without wanting to wade in on eggshells I personally believe there is a condition that I'd best describe as being "limelight addiction". To spend the vast majority of Your life on stage performing in front of large appreciative audiences and the euphoric buzz that gets offered up from that is a big deal and there's a point where it has to be let go of. I'm also now in My sixties and harbouring thoughts of (if You'll pardon the pun) where next Columbus? At the end of the day We have to forgive ourselves for only being human.

Old punks look funny. I'm saying this as a (turning) 60 (in 2 weeks) year old punk. My mohawk is quite barren in the middle but actually, I don't give a fuck. The absolute best thing about old punks who have played in bands most of their lives - and still do, is that they still sound mint! Steve here is a perfect example, as is Dick & the Subhumans. Just brilliant. . keep 'em coming! (I still have somewhere, a few hand written letters from Dick from the mid 80s when one by one I bought every tape they released.

I was today years old when i learned Beki Straughan was in Steve's band.(Hubby Steve currently UK SUBS guitarist) ,both been part of the Sunderland/North east punk scene for ever.😮.I don't agree with the O2 gigs personally,so many other venues to play,its an on odd fit to slag The Clash for CBS from such venues imo.Sad to hear Steve suffers from depression,when he's brought so much enjoyment to others...if you can call being told how shit the word is as enjoyment.

Charging $20.00 (U.S.) for The Last Supper, playing Riot Fest with The Exploited, suing Anarcho-Punk websites for posting the Crass catalog for free download, threatening to shot out the knee caps of Special Duties for the song "Bullshit Crass", I have to agree. Punk is DEAD. From what I've heard, Steve Doesn't practice what he preaches. Shame too, since I've been a Crass fan since 1979 (YES, I'M OLD!) The music and the ideas expressed are still good, though.
