It’s great hearing Steve talk at length as most interviews at Dial House were dominated by Penny. Very down to earth, intelligent and funny bloke.

Steve Ignorant is nothing like I expected. Down to earth guy, read his autobiography as well. Worth a read for def.

Thanks for uploading this interview. Very honest and down to earth. Ive always thought that considering all the time energy and commitment Crass gave to their cause they deserve to at least enjoy some of the fruits of the royalties for these years in their lives.

It is a pleasure, we wanted to give a view only a close friend would get, without a crew making people nervous, we took some beers and had a great laugh in his small room in the sanctuary that still is Crass's house at Dial House. @@PlanetPunk Saw Crass at St. Barnabas Church in Montpelier in '80's with Annie Anxiety. Gig was chaotic but great...Annie Anxiety got facially covered in phlegm but it did not stop her. I never liked the flobbing. Crass Lyrics are relevant in a strong way today particularly 'Banned from the Roxy'. I'd love to see Steve Ignorant interview Dave Grohl.

Great interview! I was at the Crass ( and Poison Girls and third band ) gig at Barry Island, in 1979. Still love their music!

Poison Girls and Rubella Ballet played the year after and it turned into a bloodbath with a couple hundred skinheads arrived mob handed with weapons to put a stop to the gig read the whole story moment by moment in my book coming out soon.

He's right that the equality with women wasn't achieved, but it went a long way towards it. I was at a Crass gig in 83 (I think) in Hastings, on the pier, it was great. There was more of an opportunity for women (young as I was then) to express stuff that wasn't classically feminine, and I haven't really changed in that respect. He seems like a genuine person, good to hear him talk.

one of my small time heroes. i've supported him in 2016 and still see him occasionally at rebellion. his partner Jona always remembers me and has a good natter with me and Steve remains a gentle, humble sort who'll often say hello and take a photo. every time is a honorable experience.

Love the interview as CRASS was and still is one of my favorite bands. However, as a frog, I wish there were some subtitles !

The early underground warehouse/ site squat Rave scene (not the other rip off £50 a ticket scene, the free sound system 'pass the bucket' donation one) used to be full of old punks and there was often a separate room where bands, mainly punk ones played.

Crass were a pivotal band for me in my early teens. Just the mindset of those people was inspiring and the anarcho-punk ethic is still with me today some 50+ years later. Thanks for giving this insight.

Nice 1 steve I stayed with u lot in 1985 at the dial house remember sitting round the table having a chat with you an that young lad joe I stayed for 2nights thanks mate then went 2 meet colin gerwood 2 go up 2 Birmingham 4 a gig nice 1 steve great memories

I really enjoyed listening to Steve here, especially his description of traditional Punch and Judy shows free from inane PC censorship of pantomime puppetry mocking wife beating and infanticide, etc. I grew up within a few miles of a northwestern seaside resort which once boasted 2 Victorian piers and 3 fairgrounds it became the desired destination elderly gentlefolk retired to, instead of the bedsit bedlam infamous for streets strewn with used syringes it is now. Thanks for this upload.

been a crass fan for 20 yrs. what I would give to see that puppet show. thanks for the up.

Great interview. He’s come up in the world, last time I saw him performing in Middlesbrough, during the Falklands War, he was drinking a can of Kestrel lager.

I was at that gig in Putney as my mates dad run the boozer we saw crass I was not quite 13 never forget how different they were with flags and banners brilliant we had to go before we saw the subs as it was getting late ,crass shaped my attitude .

18:31 ... regardless of one's economic/political standpoint; that's a question raised by A LOT of musicians of all genres.

The contradictions between Steve's recollections and Penny's are pretty telling. Rimbaud always explains how they ended up with "bins of money" after feeding was re-pressed and Steve obviously never saw any of it. When Steve did the Last supper at Shepherd's Bush Penny wanted no part of it and called it "total crap" which is easier to do when you still live at Dial House and have a nice productive garden and a few quid in the bank.

I recently read 'the day the country died' & the impression I got was that Penny was money minded about the whole thing. Several bands mention he was controlling about production & artwork against their wishes. He mentions himself that he wanted all the bands to be somewhat of a similar aesthetic so that the records would be recognizable & sell. Kinda rubbed me the wrong way.

That was fantastic, but does anyone know why Steve got a yearning for pickled onions

I went to see Crass in Holborn, drank too much and fell asleep on a chair and woke up after Crass had started playing to see a table flying towards me and a load of skinheads fucking the place up. Managed to find my mate and caught the last train home. Good times!

I always thought that bands deserved a fair few quid for their efforts, I never saw any problem with people who make those efforts getting some money. Why should they starve and not be able to afford clothes to keep warm and pay heating and energy bills in winter.

Really enjoyed that.... Cheers Sid & Steve.......
