Steve Askew (KajaGooGoo) - BBC1 (Pop Quiz) - 09.04.1983

Музыка

Broadcast date: 09 April 1983, UK.
BBC1 - Pop Quiz. Series 3, Episode 1.
Hosted by Mike Read.
Pop Quiz was a British television quiz programme that originally aired on BBC1 from 4 July 1981 to 28 December 1984 with a Top of the Pops special on 4 January 1994 hosted by Mike Read. It was then revived from 21 May to 9 July 1994 on the same channel but this time hosted by Chris Tarrant. It was revived again on Red TV from 14 June to 30 August 2008 with Mike Read returning as host; he also hosted two specials on BBC Four in December 2016 and January 2017. The show has both team and individual rounds. The individual rounds see each player given a song then asked a question about the song (like a guest player on the recording), asked to identify three different artists who sang the same song in the correct order, or asked to name a song where a certain lyric appears. Team rounds include a naming a list of number one hits by a group, a compilation of songs of a particular theme where the teams guess the artists and a quick-fire round.
Panel: team captain: B.A Robertson, Steve Askew, Bill Nelson; second team captain: David Grant, Rick Wakeman, Stella Barker (The Belle Stars).
3 of KajaGooGoo band members took part in BBC's Pop Quiz: Steve Askew in 1983, Limahl in 1983 Christmas Special and Nick Beggs in 1984 (all on my playlists).
Special thank you to KZreadr ‪@durchhaltenbis70‬ for helping with getting the copy.

Much better, and more interesting, than Buzzcocks - which was far more about taking the piss and less about the music. It's interesting to see what music musicians know about.

What fun! Wish we'd had a tv show like in the USA back in the day (would have watched every episode). Steve did a great job in helping to save the day for his team. Kewl! ❤☮🌎

Mike accepted the names of the 4 members of Japan but didn’t require the 5th member’s name, Rob Dean, who was in the video they showed and only left the band between the Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Tin Drum albums.

According to the Radio Times, Kevin Rowland of Dexys Midnight Runners was due to appear on David Grant's team. Looks like he had to pull out, with Rick Wakeman taking his place.

8:55 It's interesting seeing someone on a pop music quiz NOT getting that song. Because it's so well known. But by that time, it wasn't out for very long so no one had that song drilled into their mind like they do now.

I was just saying this the other day. Most of the songs played are now ingrained in our DNA and it's funny how when it comes to name number ones, I name ones that weren't released yet.

Yes, the stupid girly screams for the Kajagoogoo member (what a HUGE talent, HE turned out to be, eh?) and for no-one else was pretty much unbearable. Also, considering the amount of cheating, is there any real point in keeping the score?

@@exessex3522 It's in the song at the end of each verse... Everybody's in despair, every girl and boy But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here, everybody's gonna jump for joy Everyone's beneath the trees, feedin' pigeons on a limb But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here, all the pigeons gonna run to him Nobody can get no sleep, there's someone on everyone's toes But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here, everybody's gonna wanna doze

Weird that Bill Nelson at 2:30 couldn't recall a song title as famous as "Sunshine of Your Love" by Cream, but knew that Clapton wasn't in The Yardbirds the same time as Jimmy Page, which is much more obscure rock knowledge.

Rick Wakeman with a beard... that's much better. (For context, I saw Series 1 Episode 2 where Wakeman was a team captain... and he was clean shaven. It was just so unsettling to see. Very Uncanny Valley.)

7:37 Grant gives the idiot excuse of "none of us were born in 1967". I notice that Mr Wakeman made no comment. He was born in May 1949. He was just about to turn 34 when this was recorded and was 18 back in 1967.
