I'm a little surprised no Who fan picked up or commented on the fact panelist Tony Butler, at the time this took place, was Pete Townshend's bass player. He'd been playing with Pete for about five years at this point. I wonder if there was awkward tension between him and John Entwistle.

So many greats in this episode - Davy Jones is an incredibly fun personality, Feargal Sharkey perhaps trying that little bit too hard to be quirky but it doesn't come off, and the Ox showing that the hardest rockers in the world are often the softest spoken people ever. On the other side, Cheryl Baker is just gorgeous so it doesn't really matter what she does or says, while Tony Butler and Dave Dee just look so happy to be on the show at long last! Two of these guests returned for the Spot the Star segment in the first 1984 Christmas Special.

When I was a child my mother was very strict about what I could watch on TV and what music I could listen to. Classical music only! My friend's parents however had no such rules so she loved her pop and had a crush on Mike Read (this is true). Anyway I went to visit her at her house and she said "we're going to play Mike Read's Pop Quiz" which was a trivia card game thing. I said "oh no, I'll be rubbish, I won't get any of the answers" but she insisted so we did play it and I was rubbish. She got most of the answers right, I got one only, I think it was Boy George. I felt humiliated but at least I can enjoy these videos in retrospect! And I do so thanks for uploading it. I'm now quite good at 60s/70s/80s pop trivia because I love the music from those eras.

The Monkees became what they pretended to be on TV...a band struggling to make it...with all the ups and downs most every garage band had, while living and loving life to the fullest. The Don Kirshner songs were great...I think we all love them...but the music they made on their own is real. That WAS The Monkees. That IS The Monkees. They worked hard at it, together, and it worked. It was their music, their sound. Original and distinct. When a ZZ Top song comes on the radio, everyone immediately knows it's ZZ Top. Even if it's a brand new release, a few seconds into it, you know without a doubt it's ZZ Top. Their sound is unique, distinct. There's not a whole lot of bands that can pull that off. A lot of times, even with great songs, you wait anxiously for the DJ to tell you who it was playing it. But not with bands that created their own unique sound. The Allman Brothers were another. Even if it's a song you never heard before, you automatically know who's playing as soon as it starts. That applies to bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. It also applies to The Monkees. They got out from under the manufactured, made for tv sound that was their beginning and created a sound that was beyond doubt, their own. They pulled it off. When a Monkee's song is played, no matter which song it is or which Monkee is singing, everyone knows immediately, that's The Monkees. They went through a lot through the years, disagreements, band members leaving and returning, different combinations keeping the music alive, but through it all, they never hired a replacement and called them "a Monkee". I forget which one said it, but one said, "The Monkees will always be these four guys". And they were. I respect that. Not a lot of bands can make that claim. From day one until now, with only one Monkee left, for 6 decades, The Monkees have always been Peter, Mike, Micky and Davy. That's success. History will record the miracle that is The Monkees. It's a once in eternity story. And I am glad to have experienced it in real time. Monkeemen forever!

You know, all you people , spend your time making your immature remarks about David jones, you all need to get on with your own lives! It seems to me you never want to let it go! Granted, we all have our favorite singers, and go out to our up most to support our favorites, thats fine with me. I personally don't criticize any for that? I think that's great, that's how performers, carry on! They really exist, because of the devoted fans. But, what really do you get from ripping an other performer a part? Just because you don't like what they? Grant it, David Jones was first, a professional actor, who was told to go down ,and see what they may see in your background. That is it. Well they saw, possibly in what, David brought. His presentation, his experiences, his character. His appearance. David was a quick learner, knowing, just what to bring to the meeting. So they, signed him on first. He knew how to play a piano, could, play drums, l've been, told. But when , all the members were chosen, the true musicians, Peter Tork, Michael Nesmith, and Micky Dolenz, who were maybe first told , they could possibly perform with their own guitars. Maybe, I don't really know. But as it all came together, it became, a no, you won't be playing any guitars, drums, anything. The real musicians, in the group, felt it was all lies! The producers had brought in other professional musicians, who did, and played on other performers, recording, albums too! So to constantly bring up, the Monkees, suck! And Davyjones sucks! It's pointless! When given the chance, they showed all the media, and whoever checked them out ,they can play! Their own instruments, and they can play a tight show! Many times over! For many yrs! They just needed the chance! Many hours of hard work ,and practice, brought ,what no body could believe! So if you were say to David jones ,hey man you still ! Suck! Man! He would say, well thats your, opinion. Over the yrs. I have sold out countless concerts! So ,been there, done that! End of story! For yrs. People such as all of, that find fault with any of them, The Monkees? You are just blowing in the winds!

@@SundaeExpress So? Well let see here. 1: This title is "Davy Jones on Pop Quiz" so you'd assume they use a thumbnail of Davy Jones correct? 2: The channel is called "raremonkees" so you definately assume they pick a better thumbnail. Maybe one of Davy Jones. Are you blind to this ? I did put an lol at the end of my comment to avoid dickhead comments like yours but even that is too smart for you.
