Stepping Stones to Hope | Romans 5 | Gary Hamrick

2/04/2024
There are a lot of people in the world who have no hope-overwhelmed with grief, or pain, or sorrow, or anxiety-regretting the past, uncertain about the present, or worrying about the future. But God offers us a HOPE that the world does not have. In Romans 5, Paul tells us that there is a path toward hope that begins with suffering, and includes perseverance and character. Pastor Gary explains each of these steps toward HOPE in today’s study from Romans 5.
00:00 - Stepping Stones to Hope
02:41 - Definition of Justification
04:03 - Being at peace with God does not imply the absence of suffering
11:35 - Hope is born out of suffering, but it is not a direct path
12:45 - Stepping Stones to Hope
12:54 - 1) Suffering
13:35 - Jobs example through suffering
13:45 - 1) Job did not blame God
14:04 - 2) Job did not listen to his friends who tried to explain his suffering
15:05 - 3) Job acknowledged that man is limited in his understanding
16:10 - 4) Job learned that you can’t control what in uncontrollable
20:06 - 2) PERSEVERANCE
23:13 - 3) CHARACTER
26:52 - 4) HOPE

Thank you pastor. I overdosed a couple years ago and the people I was with dumped my body several miles out of town. Long story short as I finally got up and got to walking I came upon a Bible opened to Romans 5. As I read those words it felt like the Lord himself swarmed down around me and cradled me. The most perfect love and peace I have ever experienced in that very moment I realized I had never been alone my entire life. This is my most cherished chapter in the Bible thank you Jesus for not giving up on me

I now recognize that the trials I have been through and continue to go through in my life have actually made me humble and stronger and have given me hope as supplied by the Holy Spirit 🙏. To me believing in hope takes faith to back it up just as being a believer in Christ does . Gary you explained it all so thorough, yet you broke it all down so it could be understood by mere human beings. Thank you God and Gary 🙏🤗

Kevin Rider - I like the way Pastor Steve Feden put it on how to understand verses on 'joy' in trials. Sometimes in the church and with Christians verses like these on joy are misused. These verses should be a reminder spoken to encourage someone as they consider what Christ has made available to us through what He's done, building-up an individual. Too often unfortunately the 'feelings of the joy' itself becomes the focus and is spoken of in a way that cultivates judgement on those needing encouragement, for not exhibiting the fruit of the spirit as we're being affected some more than others by the fallen world in which we live. It would be good to remember the verse in Job 12:5 "In the thoughts of one who is at ease there is contempt for misfortune" CCF - James Chapter 1 1-2-FBH - Aug 8 (Radio Sermon: Faith By Hearing - Pastor Steve Feden James 1:2 ‘My brethren count it all joy when you fall into various trials. Knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience, but let patience have it’s perfect work that you may be perfect and complete lacking nothing.’ James says this crazy thing. He says, ‘Count it all joy when it happens to you. Consider it a cause for joy. You come home after a meeting with the boss, “Hey honey, guess what. The boss had a meeting with me.” “Really, what did he say?” “He said I got fired. Let’s go to dinner. Let’s celebrate!” “Gee honey, our 15 year old daughter was suspended for possession of narcotics at school today. Let’s go out. Let’s sing! Let’s rejoice!” “We just moved to a new school today”, a teenager might say, “and we don’t have any friends, and kids are hard on me, and I can’t get into any cliques, and I don’t have any friends, and I’m struggling.” And mom and dad says, “Hey, Praise the Lord!” And the kids are packing their bags to run. When I’m in trials I count it as a terrific inconvenience. I don’t have time for this in my life. Not now, this is a bad time. I’m counting it as an opportunity of anger and frustration. I mean, count it all bummer when you fall into trials. Count it all crummy when things don’t go well. So what’s really being said here? The word ‘count’ - you have to know what it means. Circle it, underline it, mark it in red, because this is the key. It means to consider or to think. And the original, there are some nuances to that word too, but your first definition of it means to lead; or to consider or think. It speaks of leading your mind through a reasoning process. When he says ‘count it all joy’ it is a challenge - not to change the way you feel about a situation, but to change the way you think about it. He doesn’t say feel joyful, ‘Wahoo! You know, flat tire on the way to work today. Yea, that’s great.’ It’s mental, not emotional. You see, your emotions will be dictated by the way you think. It shouldn’t be the other way. You have to let the way you think dictate the way you feel. Rather than the way you feel dictate the way you think. (This doesn’t deny legitimate feelings of being affected by the circumstance, but interjects thoughts that lead to feelings of how this suffering is producing patience, which produces character, which produces hope as you consider these things. Romans 5:3-4) So, that’s the issue. And he says, it’s not just something you do, he says there’s a reason - knowing. Because you know something you do this. You think this way because of something you know. You know - the testing of your faith is productive; it produces patience. Deuteronomy 8: the children of Israel, in the wilderness, struggling to find water, struggling to find food. No doubt asking, “God, if you love us why did you bring us this way?” verse 2, “You shall remember the Lord your God led you all the way, these 40 years in the wilderness, to humble you, and to test you.” Just like we’re talking about in James. “To know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.” …..So he humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and then fed you with manna which you did not know. Nor did your fathers know. Catch that for a second. God says I’m going to lead you into a trial, I’m going to lead you into a test. One thing that’s going to happen is your going to be humbled. Because you’re going to realize that you thought you were big and tuff, and strong, and like you could control everything in your life, and now you’re in a situation where you know you don’t have control. You’ve come to the end of your ability to manipulate your environment. They didn’t have fruit, and they couldn’t like, make it. They couldn’t like, take dirt, and breathe life into it, and make bread. They couldn’t do that. It was beyond them. They had to trust God. That’s humbling. That’s humble when you say, “I can’t, but I know God can.” To test them to know what was in their heart. He allowed them to hunger. And then what did he do? Then he fed them, in a way that they never knew even was possible. That’s what happens in trials. You come up and you think ‘This is what ought to happen’ or ‘That is what needs to happen’ and then something happens, after you wait and you let God work it out for you and you go, ‘Man, I never expected that.’ God brought that money from and unpredictable source, he brought that job from an unknown place. Didn’t expect that. God says, ‘ Just remember, you were in need, and I met that need.’ Chapter 8 verse 15, again speaking to the Israelites, he said to them, ‘Who led you through the great and terrible wilderness in which were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and thirsty land where there was no water? He brought you water from the flinty rock. He led you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know. That he might humble you, and that he might test you.’ And what does that say next, ‘to do you good in the end.’ We count it all joy anytime there’s a trial, because you know that God is meaning to do you good in the end. Know that the testing of your faith produces patience, and patience is one of those things we need isn’t it. Everything in our world is moving us to impatience. Trials produce steadfast resolve, the ability to bear up under a load. Helps to develop character that would otherwise have gone undeveloped.

@@tammyboyle4232I agree. The enemy lies to us, telling us that fear is failure. Yet we can anchor ourselves to God’s promises as truth, professing and receiving them again and again. Worship is my life raft against the torrid waters. God’s Word is my tow-line back into the harbor of His protection. Isaiah 43:1 & John 10:28

How long do you have to suffer? I've been suffering all my life. So, please educate me because I'm tired. I've done everything in faith and I DO live for God. Please explain because my ❤ is starting to get cold. It's easy for you. You have it all.

    Q. would you be able to clip the worship song Hope Has a Name as a standalone video to share? Stopped me in my tracks. And want to share that Hope via this worship song. Thanks 🎵
