Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I hope you all enjoy this quick and simple recipe for roat. This sweet fried dish can be eaten for religious functions or even just as a snack with a cup of coffee or tea. The addition of the cherries really make this roat even more delicious.
Ingredients and Measurements:
2 cups all purpose flour
2 tbsp. ghee (plus more to fry)
1/4 cup brown OR white sugar
1/4 cup maraschino cherries chopped (optional)
1/4 cup raisins
1/2-3/4 cups evaporated OR whole milk

I have made this recipe without cherries only because I couldn’t find the type. Everyone loved the taste asking for more. I can only make roat in my hanuman pooja time although I religiously pray to him every Tuesday once a month we have Ramayan satsangh with 25 to 40 people . Thank you for sharing this amazing recipe.

People normally dont use the cherries bc they are usually coloured red from bug shells (carminic acid). Your channel is great for us 1st generation non guyanese. Thanks for keeping the food traditions alive

Wow I have never heard of that. I will look into it. We use the glace cherries versus maraschino so maybe they don't have it. Thanks for letting me know.

Yeah, I use to work at Starbucks at a teenager and that's where I learned that most red foods use this bug shell coloring.

Thanks for sharing that wonderful receipe..as a Hindu the reason I opt not to use the cherries is it contains red 40 which is made from insects and not appropriate to use for offerings, lots of folks are not aware, who would even think that cherries would contain this? Just thought I should share for general knowledge.

I have heard this before but didn't know the truth behind it. When we make roat for puja we usually just put raisins anyways. I usually put the cherries when making it to snack on at home

Matthew, this is Ranie Sookram of Toronto, Canada. Last night I watched you make Rote on youtube. I followed you from beginning to end and today, this morning we were performing Hanuman Pooja for my birthday which is on Thursday. My rote and my Prasadum came out exactly as yours, I shared with all my friends. But I want to mention something to you, you don't have to use it, but a gentleman, a cook man for the Mandir, makes the best rote here in Canada, and he told me that whenever he makes rote, he puts a small piece of mashed Banana also in the flour, he said Hanuman loves Banana and that why he does this, what do you think of this idea. Anyways my rote was quite good, I also followed you on the Prasadum and that also came out good. Thank you very much Matthew, stay safe and well. Ranie Sookram.

I just stumbled upon this channel and it's the only Caribbean cooking channel I like. As someone who left Trinidad as a kid, coming back to these Caribbean channels annoys the hell out of me. No one knows how to write a recipe, or speak properly. They use the wrong words to describe ingredients and don't give a shit about doing any research. This channel is different. You explain why to do the things you do and don't just mindlessly throw out a recipe. Great job man, keep at it. :)
Looking so yummy 🥰I don't like cherry and raisin in it I don't put none 👍👍
Hi.. Thanks for recipe, can we use jaggery instead of sugar
@matthewsguyanesecooking4601
2 жыл бұрын
You can use it but I’ve never tried it. You would have to grate the jaggery into the dough or dissolve into the milk. Maybe for 2 cups flour use like 1/2 cup jaggery??

Looks great. Hindus In South Africa also make Rhot as an offering to Lord Hanuman. Do you know the origins of Rhot although made by South African Hindus we have no idea on it's origin?
@matthewsguyanesecooking4601

The origin of roat comes from India. It is commonly made for Hanuman Puja, but it has many different spellings around world (roth, roat, rota, roath, etc.)
