Stefan Solvi lifting the 281KG / 620LB Icelandic Brynjólfstak Stone

Спорт

Legend says that the Brynjólfstak Stone was first pulled from the sea in 1845, when a mighty farmer named Brynjólfur asked four of the strongest men in the land to lift the giant slab on to his shoulders. From there, as perhaps an extreme proof of his own superior strength, Brynjólfur carried the 281kg (620 LB) stone on his own, uphill, to a nearby ridge . . . a distance of 50-70 meters to its current location. Naturally, the stone has since been named in his honor.

I see a new event blossoming. Maybe a world stone-only comp, using legendary stones and athletes from across the globe.... I'm drooling at the prospect.

Brynjólfur "The Strong" Eggertsson. I wish that was my name.

This is a very impressive lift. It’s not only lifting strength but also the clamping force one needs to exert in order to be able to lift it off the ground. Lifting rocks is very different from lifting weights in a gym.

Humans are soft nowadays. Easier life, with push button convenience and machinery, abundance of food etc. Men were tougher back then. Besides he was no doubt a one in a million genetic monster like the best of todays open class strongmen.

@@mikemoore2791 genetics maybe, the harder life would have meant a much higher average fitness and strength but a lower strength of the top people, because they're doing manual labour all day, which limits their ability to get as strong as people who can manage fatigue to optimise work

You ever lifted a large rock? If you did, you'd know that they get heavy real f.cking quick. The stone from the Stone-to-Shoulder at the ASC is over 400lb.
