Steering Wheel/Airbag/Clock Spring Replacement - Trionic Seven

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I fix the broken horn and steering wheel buttons in the Saab 9-5. This also fixes a common airbag warning light. Our horn stopped working, and the steering wheel buttons went crazy. Pressing the Vol- button increased volume, pressing Vol+ switched audio input, and pressing the horn did nothing.
The fix was to replace/re-seat the clock spring behind the steering wheel. This involves removing the airbag, removing the steering wheel and the clock spring. This is also a common reason for an airbag light.
Thanks to Viktor for letting me borrow your awesome Tech2 tool.
Car shown: 2006 Saab 9-5 Biopower Vector 2.0t.
Swedish: Rattknapparna och tutan slutade att fungera. Trycker man på en knapp händer något annat, t.ex. vol- höjer volymen, src byter ljudingång etc. Lösningen är att byta kontaktrullen bakom ratten. Denna video visar också hur man tar bort airbag och hur man byter ratt.

Thanks for the informative video Jonathan it was enjoyable to watch. I have a 2005 Saab aero convertible. Everything doesn’t work from my paddles ( auto ) to my volume controls to my horn and the airbag light is on. Has anyone ever just cleaned the contacts of the clockspring, and all of its contact points to see if that could only be cleaned and not replaced?

You were partly right about the manufacturer of the airbag. Until 2006 (for the 9-5) it was Autoliv. The 2006-2009 Saab 9-5 and 2003-2011 Saab 9-3 have airbags made by Takata. The older Saab 9-5 before the 2006 dash update have airbags made by Autoliv in Sweden.

Natural talent to explain...as well How did you check if the airbag is covered by recall or not? If you did it. I would like to check mine and I don't know how to made the grade. Than I' ll be able to update your link on 8:20 once I'll disassemble the airbag itself. Or you might prefer do it for me.

"Go home Saab, you are drunk." Funny as that was, this was a wonderfully informative video. One thing I am wondering is if it is possible on the older 1999-2005 9-5 to reattach the airbag in such a way that misaligns the horn buttons? The right button feels harder to press than the left one.

  • @TrionicSeven

    @TrionicSeven

    6 жыл бұрын

The horn "button" is the giant bracket in the middle, and I think it's the same for 2002-2005. However, what I didn't show on video was how I reattached the airbag, and it had to do with some off-camera fiddling I did to that horn bracket. You can adjust the tension on the springs which will be different on the two sides :)

Thanks. The tech2 isn't that expensive. Around $300 maybe from ebay, and no other tool matches it. Maybe the Autocom, but to really do stuff you'll want the tech2.

Chinese TECH2 off ebay are often complete shit. so, masure twice, before spending your money on it. if you don't have like 3 or 5 or more saabs, just befriend someone who has one :D join some community, club... etc. As for the 2.2TiD, it's vauxhall/Opel engine (from Isuzu anyway) so you'll also have chances with OPCOM :) for engine related stuff.

Well, in my experience there are good tech2 from ebay. At least five of my friends own ebay tech2:s now (number is increasing quickly) and none of them have issues. But I guess they bought from a reputable seller. Random thought: Maybe I can compile info in a vid on how to buy a tech2? Would this be interesting? One of my friends is a tech2 expert and I can probably get help from him!

Hello, my buttons work fine but the lights on the steering wheel stopped working. I have a 9-3 and have just finished the steering rack replacement. while it was off I stupidly turned the steering wheel alot because I was curious what would happen xD. i may have broken something but there are no airbag warning lights or anything, all seems normal except the lights dont work. do you or anyone else know if this has to do with the clock spring?

hello, I have a question for you, it's about 95, but the year 2002 after lifts, I have transverse clearances on the steering wheel, i.e. how stretched to myself and push back the steering wheels, I feel looseness on the steering wheel. Is there any pad under the steering wheel that can cause such looseness?

Hi, in my case it's strange, maybe You happen to know the problem. The airbag light came up every time I turn the steering wheel all way to left or right. What's strange, it goes off by itself after 30sec, when the steering wheel goes back to straight position (I thought that once it's triggered, it would go off only after specific nr of cycles or by using tech2). Anyway , I replaced the coil spring , but the light came up. I did the whole repair process when light was NOT ON purposely and now I'm wondering if it's on because the coil spring is faulty, or the system somehow knows that the clock spring has been replaced and I need tech2 or just wait for some specific nr of cycles so it goes away. Any clue? thanks

Hard to say a price, but now that I know how it's done I can do it in 20-30 minutes no problem. Problem is parts as the clock spring seems to be unavailable to purchase. But in Sweden, I'd guess that 30 minutes of shop time can be 600-700 sek + parts. Just a guess though!
