How to Replace a Clock Spring (airbag light & horn not working)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Learn how to turn off your airbag light and fix a horn that doesn't work by replacing your clock spring. Replacing a clock spring is very simple, saves us over $600 and takes less than an hour. I will show you how to safely remove the airbag and steering wheel so you can replace the clockspring at home using common hand tools.
To figure out I had a bad clock spring, I used an obd2 scanner to scan the airbag light and got codes b1801 and b1811 which is an open squib circuit, which means the clock spring is bad. Another way to tell the clock spring is bad is the horn doesn't work and/or the steering wheel buttons don't work.

Hey Chris Fix. May 28, 2024. My cruise control quit working, I replaced the switch and the clock spring per your video and it works perfectly on my 14 yr old 294,000 mile Toyota Tacoma. The dealer I bought it from wanted $1300.00 parts/ labor and 1/2 a day to fix it. With your video and approximately $50.00 parts and 1 hour of my time- DONE ! Thanks a million.

My dad's been working at a parts store for 12 years or so. My daughter had a 2007 Dodge Caliber given to her and I wanted to fix her cruise control, so I bought a cruise control switch and replaced it. When that didn't fix it, I learned that along with the cruise, the horn didn't work and the airbag light was on. I had already watched this video once, but found it again and the rest is history. Fixed all those problems for $26 and had no problems whatsoever. Saved me a ton.

Chris, thanks for your clear guidance on how to proceed safely and do the clock spring in my driveway; saved me hundreds of dollars. This is a job any careful, sober auto mechanic can do without much difficulty. Hardest part for me was overcoming stripped threads on the steering wheel (someone had already been there before me . . .) I used 2 other gear pullers until I got the steering wheel started off the splines. You make GREAT videos--please keep it up. When I need to do something I have never done, I always check to see if you have a video (even if it is NOT my car). I have a 1996 Chrysler Town and Country; by late 2023, I have replaced about 95% of ALL the parts in this van--249K miles and going strong. Thanks to videos and other mechanics who have taught me all I needed to know.

@KelMaster Construction I've replaced hundreds of airbags for the Takata recall and have never disconnected the battery. Dealer techs wont do that because we are on flat rate and time is money. Plus customers get upset if they loose their stations lol. If you're doing it at home I recommend it though. We did have one tech turn an airbag ECU upside down with the ignition on and it tripped the rollover sensor which deployed all the airbags. Always take the key out of the ignition at least

I avoid aftermarket parts as a rule - too many _really_ bad experiences - but in this case I agree with Chris. The high failure rate on the OEM one is enough to get our attention, and the ease of replacement, low impact if it does fail, and the enormous price difference make it attractive indeed.

This problem was fixed a year and a half ago by adjusting the shifter cable. I figured it would be another adjustment of the shifter cable. However they said there’s no problem. They’ve cleaned it up and slight adjustment and charge $95. I left the dealership and discovered my reverse and drive her right out of alignment now as well as my park. Your video is the exact problem I have which I think I will email to the dealership service department. Thank you so much!

I paid $10.00 plus shipping for a brand new same exact part as a factory clock spring, it even came with a 1 year warranty!! Total savings was well north of $500 from the dealer price parts and labor. Had to buy a couple tools, total cost was about $33.00 tools and parts. You know, I’m only 15 years old (turning 16 January) and I’m somehow considered a professional mechanic. I got to a trade school here where I live. And my teacher yells at me all the time for being smarter than the other kids 😂🤷🏻‍♀️. I’ve usually worked on cars always with my dad. Multiple types of cars or trucks, from Range Rovers to corvettes. Heck I’ve even worked on Jaguars before. Yet, my dad has tought me a lot about how to work on cars. Chris, to this day. You’re the person that gave me my mind with working with my hands and tools. You’ve tought me how to change your cars fly wheel and clutch and the transmission. To oil changes and everything else. You’ve told me how to use certain tools or alternatives to how to use something if you can’t get the tool. Great minds think alike Chris. And I’m glad you made the man I am today to be able to work with my hands and tools. And I thank you for that. More thank you. More than I ever will be able to. Thank you. 🙏

Dude, I love you. I paid $17 on eBay including tax and shipping. It took me about an hour because I was being very methodical but I think I can do it now in about 15 minutes. You were so thorough but A quick note for your followers: when transferring the sensor to the new clock spring, make sure that middle white circular thing is properly lined up. One side is slightly bigger than the other. Rotate it so the two little square things fit easily or you will waste 10 minutes trying to force it in like me.

Fabulous vid, pal. I'm 63 and was a mechanic back when we used dinosaurs to pull us around. Last time I pulled a steering wheel, it was unimaginable to not have a wheel puller. Plus, it was daunting to pull an airbag. Didn't wanna kill myself. Think I'll save myself about $450 and rockauto the clockspring and do this my own damn self. Thank you, sir.

He obviously used old footage from the steering wheel wrapping video, he didn't record that while making this vid.

Great video! Dealership scammers tried to charge me 140 bucks only for diagnostic! 5 minutes work with OBD scanner you can get for as much as 50 bucks! SO I was looking for good video how to disassemble steering wheel on Prius, to figure out what's wrong with it and this video is brilliant. However you don't have to unplug battery in trunk, since there is main under the hood in fuse box (at the right to engine). It is safer and easier. Also don't forget to reset your Prius completely.

I didn't even know what a clockspring was before watching this video. I thought it was like blinker fluid but apparently it's a real thing. Thanks for all the videos, I'm gaining a lot of knowledge.

"The clock spring connects all the electronics of the steering wheel" me glancing over my car that doesn't even have the horn built into the wheel *seems like I'll be saving a lot of money* !
