SteamOS 3.6 preview is here. And it's hinting at something huge!

Ғылым және технология

The SteamOS 3.6 preview is here and there are many updates and changes for our favorite gaming OS. But what's the deal with the addition of HDMI CEC remote input? I feel like that could be hinting at new console hardware. But I'd love your thoughts.

I dunno what is going on with their first party on the Switch, but it was not good.... All the best games were Wii U ports. @@SilverinWolvesScarletForestSno thats definitely a subjective opinion, considering first party of switch “not good” sounds like a “me” issue more than anything. Odyssey worked for a lot of people (very creative game) and botw definitely paved the future of a lot of open world games (aka elden ring for example, which mainly got inspired by botw, totk also has some of the craziest designed mechanics in any videogame), switch first party was great in my opinion compared to the wii era which was awful (on par with the wii u though). I do agree about closed systems though, there is no turning back for me after the Steam Deck.

I'd say they've successfully identified the flaws of the steam machine 1.0 and a console is a real possibility at this point. I think Sony and Microsoft are both seeing the dollar signs in handheld demand and Valve is realizing the gaps between what they've failed at and what's going to grow the brand even further. I've always loved "mid" tier hardware and it's capability. The fact that Microsoft, Nintendo and Valve all have catered to it makes me think its a permanent fixture. This is fantasic, IMHO.

everyone's talking about a console, but besides a bit of TV QOL features (e.g. power on from controller, getting their damn dock working on everyone's TVs, etc), I'm not sure what I'd want out of a console that I don't already have out of the deck. however I'd be quite interested to hear what people think the advantages would be. I might also agree with them if I know what they are. If it's console exclusives, then eff that. it'd be exactly the opposite of what I want out of valve's ecosystem. If it's beefier hardware, then - well, okay I can get behind that!

I realize Steam OS was developed with the Steam Deck in mind, but paired with an APU in a small form factor desktop case (or a full-blown tower PC) I could absolutely see it becoming a popular alternative to console gaming, especially as decent gaming APUs and last-gen GPUs come down in price.

The grand majority of console gamers unsurprisingly play games that require anti-cheat on PC. Kernel anti-cheat is becoming much more common too, which will never work exclusively through Wine. The developers of those would likely have to make a native kernel module that wine can talk to. I highly doubt that'll happen.

As someone with a home theater AVR system in my living room, I can't overstate how much of a quality of life improvement I get from the automatic TV Power and Input switching on all my devices. @@mskiptr Thanks for the info. But yeah I’m still on pascal. GTX 1080ti. Haven’t bothered upgrade Cus prices here Canada are still insane for new or used. Looked at 3090 and here they going for more then new 4080, 3090 here is anywhere $2200 Canadian to $2500 + LOL WTF? 4080 here is $1800+ Canadian last I checked. Look at 6900xt. Got ps5 for anything new. Yes I hear that there is a few disro that close to steam os (game mode) feel. Last time tried ubuntu (was around 2019/20). Couldn’t get my onboard audio from x470 motherboard to work. Also tried haloISO, that was buggy as heck. Half time couldn’t even boot desktop mode. Cus bad GTX drivers. Pop up menu to reboot/shutdown/boot desktop didn’t work Cus buggy gtx/RTX drivers. I know if had AMD gpu would prob be fine most Linux distro. But good hear Linux drivers for Nvidia is getting bit better. Hear Linux Mint is also good choice. But haven’t tired. Just been waiting see what happens with stems os but thanks for info. May check it out someday.

@@SireDragonChester Yeah, Pascal and Maxwell are sadly in the worst spot. Too new for unsigned firmware and the earlier hacks, yet too old for GSP. It's stuck with the proprietary drivers for the time being. Hopefully the 550 beta release lives up to the promises and fixes its Wayland issues. I really hope the GPU prices become less insane. Especially with Intel entering the market. You can also try looking for very old cards like Kepler. It's the last generation with pretty decent FOSS OpenGL support and will hopefully also be supported by NVK at some point. [1/2]

@@SireDragonChester As for distros, Mint and Pop_OS are a really decent first choice. If you're relatively tech savvy, you can also look into things like Fedora KDE, OpenSUSE or Debian. Personally I would avoid Ubuntu, though it's not _that_ big of a deal anyway. I also really like Arch, Alpine and Guix. They are very interesting (and quite nice), but I frankly cannot recommend them as a starting point (unless you're a very specific kind of person). [2/2]

Hard to say how much CEC foreshadows a console - CEC support is great for a dockable device. With my Switch, if I have it turned on when I dock it, my TV automatically wakes up and goes to the correct input. It's a great quality of life measure. It should be noted that various CEC features may vary between TV manufacturers.
