It's not, nor will it ever, the growth is almost entirely because of the steam deck, which isn't really a desktop device. But what this shows is that the future of Linux is not in the desktop, but purpose built OS's, not general use ones, Windows will always be better there, but OS's built to do 1 thing really well

Valve has described maintaining an anti-cheat as treadmill work. We as a community are not asking for a single one time fix, we know thats imposible. We are asking that this billion dollar company allocate some of their infinite money they get though steam and other revenue streams to making a game they still technicaly support actualy playable. TF2 already has community run servers with their own anti-cheats, but the most accessable gamemode, casual, runs on Valve's servers. This is where the bots are joining. Open-sourcing the game wouldn't fix the problem.

For game studios, at barely over 2% and knowing another company is footing the bill for a "translation layer" they have zero desire to look at that number and do anything with it. Knowing that 2 percent is covered by another entity. There's a certain number that probably exists that when some executive sees that on paper will have an ahah moment and demand software be developed for said market but that number to break that mental barrier is probably along the lines of 20%+. A few million linux user that have a reputation of not liking to pay for anything (their thinking not mine) is not going to move the needle. Linux is far more popular now and even in the minds of a lot of people where it use to not be on the radar for because of Microsoft shenanigans and that is a good thing but it will take time. However I would not be surprised if game studios within the next year or two start explicitly stating they will develop with the Proton translation layer in mind.

Now I really wish they'd fix Steam Link streaming (it is still a mess on local networks while Moonlight works fine). That and maybe fixing the PlayStation button on SteamInput so you can actually use the share button for screenshots and saving replays. And then fix Wayland support and laptop dGPUs causing crashing unless you explicitly disable it in the .desktop file. There's still a bunch of things Valve could fix, especially on Linux.

I was stocking the certified refurbished waiting for the 512gb to be in stock. During that time I would see all the other ones come in stock all the time. Then they would sell out in less then 24hrs. I think the Steam Deck has made more people aware of Linux and thus more people, once they get use to it, prefer it over bloatware windows. Even more so now that win 10 and 11 continue chugging systems and spying on users. I heard another channel talk about how software made by big companies eventually gets opensourced versions that ultimately take over as the companies put more and more features behind paywalls. In this case, it's the whole operating system. I also think it's why Steam Deck outdoes the current handheld PC market, rog ally, lenvo, whatever else exists ( I really don't care about them), they come with windows installed and it's always a hassle getting games to work properly since microsoft just does there one-size-fits-all install. A proper release of Steam OS might make those other handhelds viable, but Steam Deck is the only one tailored to run the most amount of games after install

My understanding is that the bot problem on TF2 isn't any worse than the one on CS2. It's just that the sheer low number of players on TF2 exacerbates the issue. The problem is Valve can't even make decent anti-cheat for CS2. There's a reason that no CS2 Tournament uses VAC. The problem is that if non-invasive server anti-cheat was actually viable, Valve would have figured out how to do it by now, but they can't, either because they can't be bothered, or because it really isn't possible. If it's the former, then Valve is no longer the good guy of gaming that we think of them as. If it's the latter, then it means that Valve is intentionally making their product worse because of ideals and principles, creating a worse experience for all. Basically, either way, Valve is the bad guy here. It's not like devs can just implement kernel level anti-cheat and then relax. Decent anti-cheat requires ongoing effort. That's why Valorant has fewer cheaters than apex legends despite the fact that both have kernel level anti-cheat. It's not like it's even the lazy cheap option that Linux users pretend it is. Vanguard costs $200 million to develop. Basically, Valve won't fix TF2 for the same reason they won't fix any of their other games. If it was actually possible to fix without being invasive, they would have figured it out by now. So Valve either can't or won't. And Linux users are coping hard trying to deny this.

  • @Soletestament

Could be a market share thing. People outside of the US don't have the same adherence to Windows Americans have. Steam gaining more users in other countries could be boosting the numbers. Also with the economy being tighter for your average person, buying a new copy of windows just isn't very appealing. Valve made the right move by using convergence for the Deck. By exposing people to linux it guarantees that more people actually consider it as an option. I mean once you taste the sweet freedom of being in complete control over your own tools... it's really hard to accept a tool that tries to tell you what to do again.

The source code from TF2 has leaked several times. The community does not need nor want the game open-sourced and maintained by the community, as this iw not only impratical, due to the economy of the game but also because this would fragment the communitu too much and would likely make things worse because cheaters would also have acess to the codebase. What we are asking for is proper maintenance of their own anti-cheat tool. You clearly know nothing about TF2, what we are asking for, nor what you are saying.
