I was a little nervous seeing this video as I just ordered an OLED 2 days ago. I thought "oh no did I make a mistake? I should have waited for the Ally 2" but you put my fears at ease. I don't have a SD cause i got the Ally, glad you're enjoying yours though! But Pete, hibernation on the ally works very well and i get back to my games just how you described. It takes a couple of seconds more, but it works! How's your dad?

I'd agree with most things you've said but, the original SD was always light and comfortable. The new one is lighter but, there isn't any difference in comfort to hold.

I just bought a gaming laptop about two weeks ago and upgraded the ram and storage. It runs well, but I am on the fence about getting a Steam deck or ally to take on the go or to work with me since I work nights.

Hey Pete! Got and been with the 1TB for a few days now. Put a glossy protector on it. Made it much better. I’m not gaming in high lit environments so I think I’ll be ok. But overall can’t believe it took me this long to get a Steam Deck! I love it!

Great point Angelic, my apologies for not mentioning this in the review vid - the OLED is very cool (definately cooler than the original LCD) even during long game sessions 👍

I have a ROG Ally, but I use my Steam Deck a lot more. The Deck definitely has a better ergonomic grip and is much more comfortable. But, I wouldn't give up my Ally.

My local CEX store had a public wifi named "Unprotected CEX" 😂😂😂

And also the near instantaneous pixel response time of oled vs led which also reduces the overall input lag. I remember Vincent from HDTV test doing a video on this. Oled is definitely the best option for gaming until micro led becomes more affordable.

I have both Ally and sd oled and still I can't tell which is better. I love both

I totally understand ya Jdead, the LCD felt ‘clunky’, and as you can see in the vid this feels amazingly light, Asus have pulled off a physics trick with the OLED haha! I’d encourage you to go into your nearest CEX shop here in the UK (my fave shop) to try the OLED out, see if it’s in stock near you here: uk.webuy.com/product-detail/?id=SHGPVSDO512GBB Valve also seem amazing with their Returns, you could always buy it and return if you really don’t like it… 🙌

Sure Jazzy, the Portal has a great 1080p screen but for some reason the remote play quality has been pretty lacklustre to say the least (eg motion blur, lack of crispness etc), until a huge update a few days ago that I covered here 👇 PlayStation Portal: 2.0.6 Update = HUGE Performance BOOST?! kzread.info/dash/bejne/n4N2r8WqmbbFirw.html Ive no idea why Chiaki4deck is so incredible on SD OLED and has easily beaten (and maybe is still better despite this new Portal update) Sony’s own remote play solution of the Portal, it’s baffling! I guess the developers behind Chiaki4deck are just some incredibly talented folks eh?!

@@PeteTalksTechI think it has more to do with the hardware’s video decoding capability, I regularly stream PC games to the deck through Moonlight and the decoding latency is 0-5 ms which is insane in a very good way, while the Portal has a Snapdragon 662 which is a mid-low end SOC and is 4 years old by now so I would assume that’s the reason why the deck completely demolishes the portal when it comes to game streaming.

If your looking for the best streaming device Ayn Odin 2 with PSplay (Paid unofficial version) is the best way to remote play from your ps5. If you had to choose between the 3 of these i would still get the deck OLED since it can do alot more than the odin and ps portal.

2:20 I feel like you are wrong here. The increased responsiveness probably comes from the panel itself. OLED basically has 0,001ms response times and nothing does even come close to it.

3:15 that's not true. You can do it on Ally. I use hibernation on Ally, all the time, and it works great. Should be possible also on Legion Go, I guess.

Was between this and the Rog Ally. Went with the Rog in the end as I knew I’d want to play Xbox and epic games along with steam. So was a no brainer me. Either way, this is my first handheld for pc games and it’s amazing! Also got a ps2 emulator running on it!

Got the Limited Edition, it's eve lighter than the standard OLED due to the lighter translucent plastic. I didn't think I would notice the weight difference all that much because I never felt my LCD deck was particularly heavy, grew up with a game gear with all the attachments, steam deck feels like home. The LE OLED feels surprisingly light in comparison. even with it only being a little over 5% lighter. The digitizer and touch pads both have a higher polling rate so they definately feel smoother, but the interface and everything else is smoother thanks to the 90hrz screen, the bump in ram speed only really translates into 2 to 3 additional FPS in most titles, but it's wild how good the OLED looks even at 800p. I am hoping the ROG Ally X is a solid win as well, It's going to have the same screen as the current ally so no OLED amazingness, but I will swap my ally out for the new one to see how the changes fare. I still need a windows handheld for some games. And I won't install windows on either of my steam decks.

Love my SD OLED. Sold my Series X as I've not touched it since. Wouldn't touch the ROG Ally, especially after the SDA warranty/repair and customer service issues Gamers Nexus have just highlighted.

I just wish the Deck got a Ryzen Z1 Extreme under the hood instead of the minor revision Valve did.

i couldn't disagree more... the z1 extreme is 8 cores 16 threads... that means 4 more physical cores than the steam deck which means 4 more cores that require power 100 percent of the time, thats why the Asus rog ally can only achieve about 4 hours max and it needs 7w minimum and the deck Oled can achieve nearly 13 hours and run a lot of games at 3-4w. This just could not have happened with the z1 extreme. The story is even worse with the Msi claw which has 16 cores all wanting power so the gpu simply cant perform in that case. I think valve did exactly the right thing with the OLED deck... Valve just know their shit to be honest, not cramming it with the latest processor if that means less efficiency. The steam deck is amazing for what it can do with low power rather than struggling at 30w and getting 1 hour battery.

Valves mantra is power efficiency. Deck is tuned for performance at low TDP, it's actually faster than an Ally sub 15W. You want low TDP dor better battery life so there's no way. Valve want double the perf at the same wattage that's why the SD2 is a 2025 at the earliest device and I suspect it won't come out until RDNA4 APUs appear in I assume 2026ish.

Here is how i feel about the steam deck oled, if Asus were to release the ally 2 right now... i would wait for reviews, if Valve dropped the deck 2 there would be no review required it would be a pre order. Thats just the difference in confidence i have for the two manufacturers. There is just not much they need to improve to make it unbelievable, a bit more power and its basically there right but Asus has a stack of things they need to improve to match the usability of the deck and with rumors that the ally 2 is coming this year i think its wayyyyy too soon, no confidence in asus at the moment.

@@PeteTalksTech I have official set it up emu and all and just started installing games thank you and toro all the vids made it so much easier and straight forwards . Profiles for every game a lovely sdcard and 1tb hard drive in the way. Only issue so far is 10 mb download on steam (odd cause it’s 200mb (pc gets it on steam so downloading to the usb and gonna transfer)

I have a gaming pc that can handle every game you throw at it at max settings, but I’m 30 years old and sitting on a chair playing games gets tiring real quick. I ordered steam deck so I can lay down in bed and still enjoy my pc games even if performance is not good that great compared to gaming pc, nothing beats comfort for me so I’m willing to sacrifice nice eye candy graphics for comfort, and it’s portable I can take it everywhere even on planes

You know you can still enjoy your gaming pc on your deck by streaming games to it?

Jesus Christ I want it so bad, but every time I come closer to start saving for upgrade something happens. Last week my laptop blew up and I decided to build desktop for work and so 900euros went bye bye so did my dreams of upgrading steamdeck :D

@@PeteTalksTech good thing I have my OG LCD and I'm completely happy with it, even the trackpads, upgraded storage to 1tb and it's running like a charm. Main reason I'd like an upgrade is for that battery life, but everything else is going to be just extra improvements

They don't run the exact same APU - the OLED chip was die shrunk. Same power but much more efficient so it boosts higher. It really shines with a good undervolt.

What?? It’s about as expensive as the Switch OLED. There’s also literally no other device on the planet with the specs of the Deck for anywhere near that price. Valve even said that hitting that price point was literally “painful”.

No it hasn't. This is just a tailored made gaming os. Same can be done with windows if someone wanted to so stop the Linux love nonsense. I work with linux 10 hours a day but foe my personal use, give me windows any day

Frankly disappointed. Gameplay controls are just awkward and uncomfortable. Also, it seems like every Steam Deck optimized game is demanding an internet connection to launch.
