Note, while you can change the UMA buffer size doing so may cause games to start randomly crashing due to running out of memory. So a game that has been marked as verified may start crashing in all sorts of random situations if that setting isn't set to 1GB

This 1000% I'm not even looking at another handheld unless the controls are as symmetrical and comfortable as the steamdeck layout. even for controllers I'm using the stadia controllers for now until Valve drops the Steam controller 2 🤞

Not to downplay the rest, but oh my god, that 'hold to turbo' macro is genius. Here I am mapping it to back paddle buttons like a sucker.
Steam Input also offers a small feature that a lot of people probably missed and I don't blame them. It's Anti-Deadzone Buffer. The issue it solves is that a lot of old games like the ones for PS2 have artificial deadzone around 20% of the whole stick movement. That is especially noticeable in racing games, but with anti-deadzone buffer you can basically remove that deadzone entirely. Absolute game changer for me! Try it for yourself and you will be amazed.
@delfrickintree775

definitely a great feature. it made resident evil revelations playable because the default deadzones are horrible
The steam input updates are awesome. Only thing missing is being able to use it as an actual controller for PC.

Too bad they no longer sell the Steam Controller. Although it isn't perfect; it's great as a keyboard/mouse replacement using Steam Input, but it kinda sucks as a regular controller as it is quite awkward (especially with smaller hands) to use the A/B/X/Y buttons on it. They're just too far left/down from the natural resting place of your thumb, since that's where they put the large circular touchpad.
Hi Bill, I just want to let you know, I know most of this stuff, but I keep listening while I'm doing the dishes because the blend of your voice with the background music is so relaxing. Thank you.
"Allowing Tearing" gave me a big boost for RDR2.

I might have to check that…I’ve been happy with the performance all medium and high with grass set to almost 30%….almost 50 hours and started on the 64gb lcd model and continued from the 1tb OLED and performance, and loading even from sd has been pretty negligible so far.

I bought my SD OLED two weeks ago and this is the singular most helpful video I have watched. Fantastic! Thank you, Bill. ❤
Bill-I just got back into Skyrim on Deck. Why do I feel like I haven’t slept in 4 days? 😂 This is like my 5th playthrough and I’m hooked AGAIN. 😂😂
Loving this video Bill! As someone who is new to Steamdeck, I learned so much when it came to the shortcuts, well done!
Just learned about the turbo feature because of you; its been a game changer! Thank you so much for these types of videos.
Fantastic video! Includes almost everything a new user could want to know about the Steam Deck in just one video 👍
KZread actually recommended me something cool for once! 😎 I am an early adopter to the steamdeck but even I learned something!
Fantastic video. Learned some new stuff. That hotkey shortcut is a game changer for me as I have so many different systems on my Deck 👍🏼
I always love when your twin NerdierNest makes an apparence! 🤣
So helpful. Thanks Bill 🙏
Now my steam deck transcend into another deminson! 😁💕 Thankyou
Great vid! I never added special button actions before. After watching this video, I added a turbo 'B' button action for Dragon Quest. It will be so nice now to just hold a single button down to rush through fights.

I’ve been playing the shit out of the neo geo pocket color collection and snk vs Capcom (sold separately compared to switch), and been having a blast catching up on a handled I’ve been jealous of somebody having in high school.
36:34 correction, Its not what time it is, It is how much time you have left before the battery runs out (approximately)
the VRAM/UMA Frame Buffer setting is the "Minimum" allocated on boot, linux and the steam deck can dynamically allocate more if it needs it and more ram is available, you dont need to mess with that unless you have a specific game where the ram is being eaten by the cpu/game leaving too little for your gfx allocation. Typically only windoze users need to worry about that setting.
These two keyboard chords really help me on Steam Deck (Big Picture on Steam Desktop too!) CTRL +1 : Steam Button CTRL +2 : Quick Actions
Thank you Kratos!

@@NerdNest 🤣 It's a good amount lol. I don't remember how many I got with my steamdeck, but it's 100 points for every $1 you spend. so not sure if it's from the multiple decks you've gotten or just from the games you've purchased for yourself or the channel. but you are 2x my amount and I've only bought like 10 things with them so far (I don't change my profile much lol)
I didn't know you can close games without going into the steam menu. This is verry important as I couldn't play the steam deck for months becuase the steam/... menus wouldn't work. Thanks Bill!
Damn the Sd card thing is nice in the killswitch
Hi Nerdnest. Theres has been a wifi adapter issue circulating since day 1 release of the oled model where the wifi adapter goes into power saving mode after waking from sleep/off. This causes issues for ppl whos trying to remote play with the device. Only known ”fix” is to toggle wifi off/on, and then you can remote play reliably. Is this an issue you or any ppl on your pod have encountered? I heard that wifi issues could stem from what AP you’re using. Do you mind sharing what AP you are using? :)
Cryoutils is not working as expected on 3.6. Valve switched to zram and disables the swapfile. The utility needs some re-work now as Valve now trashes the swappiness and swapfile on 3.6 and restarts zram regardless of setting a swapfile and swappiness on subsequent reboots.
I have a small 3 in 2 out powered USB switcher that I have connected to both my steamdeck dock and my pc. Although I also run the dock through a capture card so I can split a single ultra wide monitor between multiple tasks so I'm not your typical use case lol
I think I need to bookmark this video so I can refer to it again. There are a couple games I'd like to see if I can get to look smoother

People should check out tomtoc armor G-12... seems like a fairly new superslim hardcase for the Steam Deck... Unlike killswitch and similar protections the Armor G12 allow your steam deck to be "naked" when you play. but protected when in a bag. It's not particularly attractive design-wise, but it's basically been the accessory I have been wanting ever since the Steam Deck released!
I didn't know that about quick setting the steam inputs.
Got my oled about 4 weeks ago now and I love it. The ONLY issue I have with it is when I apply a little force to the top right corner of the deck it sounds crunchy, when I press down on the right stick it kinda sounds like a squeak along with the face buttons but it’s only on the left side. Although I could care less it can get annoying during space flights in no mans sky. Other than that, the deck is awesome.
Still have mine [LCD] to this day 🔥. I wonder if tbe OLED model is the one that players are able to have HDR mode on/off, etc. 🤔

Hi guys. Tempted to get a steam deck oled but I'm concerned there's either an xbox handheld or a steam deck 2 within 12 months or so. Plus the steam deck internals are 2 years+ old now and bigger games chugging it seems too 🤔🤔🤔
Is that black base for your thumb sticks? How did you want it or buy if if so then where?

Typing on a Keychron k8 wireless keyboard right now. Great quality for the price.
I feel like my thumb sticks don't have enough tension on them. Leads to having really sloppy oscillating inputs. Most noticable on driving and shooting games. Any thoughts on this? Do I just have some dud sticks? I want it to feel closer to like an Xbox controller or my scuff controller.
@NerdNest

There are replacement sticks, I don't know if yours are bad, but it might be worth trying new ones.
Best thing I did was first switch my Wifi over to the 5G channel, then in Developer mode disable Wifi power management, and now my downloads to the SSD are lightning fast.

@dewinter1411
Ай бұрын
I started getting this more and more as I tinkered with the Deck. Meaning using add ons like Decky Loader and other non stock software. I basically solved it by Factory resetting and reimaging SteamOS and keeping it pretty much stock. Sure I miss those add ons, but the stability is worth it. I found anything that requires the Sudo password to install led me to issues down the road. I guess because it writes and rewrites to places it normally can’t without the password. Worked for me.
i prefer emulation station to emudeck but i never really got emudeck working properly
Hotbar menu = Minecraft Java! Soooo good. At least for me, my hotbar in MC is always the same - tools from 1-6, 7-8 active blocks, 9 food, 0 torches, so I can reliably configure a hotbar with icons and everything for Minecraft and it's so fuggin convenient.
With the kill options, anything super-quick equivalent to alt+f4 (windows) or ctrl+esc (linux)? I may or may not save scum on deaths in the mines in Stardew Valley... (literally just ordered one to play stardew as I got sick of waiting for Switch updates, and I like playing it on the go, not at my desk).
Is this work with lcd vr too
I won’t ever change the case from the OG case my deck came with it’s the best bc of the storage for the charger on the back 😂
@EvenTheDogAgrees
6 күн бұрын
And the sad thing is, despite being the best case for storing the charger, it absolutely sucks for storing the charger. 😂 I mean, come on, couldn't they have made that case just a little thicker so it wouldn't rest on the charger? Or made the charger a little thinner, so it wouldn't stick out of the back? You can't lay it down flat, unless you lay it upside-down.
My steam deck oled is now at home in its dock and hooked to a monitor.

Yesss! I have two docks. My official dock is connected to my desktop gaming monitor with a mouse and keyboard so I can use it as a PC. The second dock is Jsaux and connected to the big television for “console” like gaming experience. Then of course there is portable mode on the go. The best of all worlds, truly. The Steam Deck is amazing. It’s replaced all my consoles except my Switch.

But what cryo utilities does? You didn't mention it, why should i install it?
@Brandon-dq3vx
Ай бұрын
Cryo Utlities is a bunch of scripts that rearrange memory and swap files to be more efficient. It also moves your shaders to be in the same disk as where your games are installed if you happen to have some on your SSD and some on an SD card. Helps you see a reasonable performance boost in a lot of games. There are a few instances where it actually makes performance a bit worse, like RDR2, but it has for the most part made my experience better.
@dewinter1411
Ай бұрын
Cryo Utilities and other software that requires a Sudo password and the running of scripts to install, has always led me to issues later on. I reset and reimaged the deck and haven’t reinstalled those things and haven’t had any issues. Cryo is useful but the way it moves stuff around and changes things led to some strange file errors and other issues.

I've had games report 6gb's of ram. How does that happen?
@dewinter1411

VRAM? That’s because it uses what it needs being an APU. So basically that leaves roughly 10gb for the CPU.

@antonkirilenko3116

@drew1921 tbf, for most modern games this number is mostly irrelevant, because the games are now addressing system RAM when they run out of VRAM and since the system RAM and VRAM on a Steam Deck are using the exact same chips it doesn't cause any performance drops. It's mostly for the older titles that may give you an error if they don't detect enough VRAM.

Or just leave it at 1 gb and let the Deck increase it in game. You can increase it to 4-8 gb if you modded your LCD deck to 32 gb Ram. Don´t use Cryo on the 3.6 , the Deck does it better on default
