Fixes and Features the Steam Deck is still missing.

Ойындар

The Steam Deck is a masterwork of hardware and software. It’s proof that having an Operating System and hardware crafted together as one, coherent product is a valid way to bring a PC to market.
While it has been a minute since we’ve had some new and truly exciting software features for Steam Deck, the Deck’s software is by no means finished.
There are odd crashes and stability issues. Gaps in features and oversights in implementation. That’s why I’m making this video. Here are 10 missing features and important fixes we need for the Steam Deck.

Idle downloads would be awesome. My least favorite thing about the Deck is when I don't touch it for a week, sitting on its charger, and I pick it up and have to wait for a dozen games to apply a week's worth of updates. IT HAD TIME TO DO THAT WHILE I WAS SLEEPING, COME ON

  • @SoundToxin

Agreed, this would be great, but also worth noting that many updates get delayed/scheduled even when your machine is awake and have to be installed manually anyway if you want them done right away. Supposedly it's to reduce the bandwith usage on Valve's servers from everyone updating their games right away. Would be kinda solved by employing P2P like bittorrent so that Valve's servers weren't the only source of the game updates.

Hopefully a future chip can integrate download while sleeping. That being said, this is also why I feel that Valve needs a "Download All Updates" button for the Deck. I get that they schedule updates on PC for bandwidth reasons but it doesn't work well on a handheld console. Especially one that can't download game updates while asleep.

Good news - Screen Video Capture is actually already possible in Game Mode with the help of a deckyloader plugin called Decky Recorder. It also has the ability to keep a rolling recording of various lengths (30s, 1m, 2m or 5m) and select between different containers such as .mkv, .MP4 or .mov. "Made for Deck" is a great idea, and the way they should do it is just have "bullet point" that you have to hit, and if hit then for the Deck, the revenue split goes up for the dev, it's an incentive for then to actually care for their game. And my biggest "problem with the Deck", it's just availability, it's still not sold officially in South America, everyone that sells it here sells it for as ABSURD amount of money. Both Lenovo Legion Go and Rog ally are sold here officially, but let's be honest, Deck is just the most "balanced experience" of all these hand held

I'm in college and I play a lot of of co-op games with my friends and -every-single-time I have to rearrange the controller order after I start a game since the built in controller takes up one of the four slots. It's my all in one system for Mario kart, Smash ultimate, NHL, Madden, Halo, Duck Game, Guitar Hero, Jackbox, even Wii Sports. Games college students love to play. When I turn on one of these games and I have 4 controllers connected, it should just work - and when we step away for a while and one of the controllers goes into sleep mode - I don't want the Neptune controller filling a slot.

Honestly I think it wouldn't be to hard to implement a "download while in stand-by" feature. I could see it working like this: 1. Check if the steam deck is currently downloading games/updates. If so, go to step 2, if not, sleep as normal. 2. Set the CPU governor to a power saving mode and disable the screen, backlight, gamepad, etc. Download the game in the background. Download speed could optionally be throttled. 3. When all downloads and updates are complete, put the deck completely to sleep. 4. If the power button is pressed again while in the "stand-by download" feature is running, revert the CPU governor to default and re-enable everything.

One of the big gripes I have with the shader cache updating is that it can download a 1 MB patch, and then (I assume) recompress an archive with all of them causing 1+ GB of writes. Those shader cache updates are probably like 75+% of the writes on my SSD's. I also use bcache on my desktop systems because I have slow internet so want all my (large) games installed locally, and spinning disks are the cheapest way to do that, and those shader cache updates on the whole collection of games every time I restart steam just completely flushes the cache. I wish they would just download the small update files, on the go, and not apply them until you launch games (or be able to mark games where you actually do want them to auto install). Same with normal updates, give me a "do not auto update games" in general settings, and a "keep this game up to date" per game instead of having to go through all my installed games and set every one of em to not auto update, and go through that on multiple systems.

I can see why downloading with the display off would be desirable, though I would like to be able to set that up to where it does that while a charger is plugged in, then disables it when it is not connected to an external power source. Additionally, I also like the idea of being able to "beam" files to and from the Deck while it is both connected to a charger and on the same network as your computer through the Steam Client, preferably with a file browser in the Client. ...though the screen capture can probably be implemented with the standard screenshot button akin to how Ningendo does it (hit it for screenshot, hold it for a clip) and casting could be a menu option. I also love the idea of Download Play being implemented again, though I'm sure hackers will make it a pain to keep secure.Maybe there could also be a re implementation of background communication with the deck off akin to Ningendo's Street Pass, where you could have some games have features that run in the background, and then when you pass close to someone else running the same game's features, they could do some sort of exchange, akin to seeing your Pokemon lists, or letting other people see what you've harvested in Stardew, and maybe making a trade.Possibly even a social game such as "find the bug" where the bug can jump from Deck to Deck throughout the day, then you check the game when you get home and see if you have the bug. I have also been seeing games that have been verified for a long time being asked about when I exit the games while On Deck, so your idea for checking up on verified titles may already be in testing (and i'm in the test pool) or it has already been rolled out. If a developer breaks Deck compatibility for a game, a lot of Deck users would start indicating so, and then Valve can make changes, be it discount on the storefront fee, or other bonuses for more compatible games, which I would be fine with being crowd sourced, as the crowd is the ones actually playing the games. It's just one additional click and about 5 seconds of your time anyway.

@gardiner_bryant - my understanding on the downloading with screen off issue is that to do that on x86 hardware you have to leave the system in full-power mode. You'll save a little battery by having the screen off, but the rest of the system has to run on full power. The low power mode that allows downloads while sleeping (I.E. Smartphones, tablets, Switch, etc) is an ARM feature. Not as big a deal with consoles as they are always plugged in, but for battery devices you don't save much in the way of battery power (if anything) if the CPU/Memory/GPU are still operating at normal power levels. Just as a note - this is a limitation on the ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go as well. With those to allow downloading with the screen off, you have to change Windows power options to "Do Nothing" or "Turn Screen off" as low power mode/sleep mode will disable everything including the network. It is a pure limitation of x86 - the feature simply doesn't currently exist at the hardware level.

On the "Made for Deck" point, there's only so much Valve can do, at the end of the day it's up to the game devs/publishers to actually utilise Steam's features. Steam Deck and Steam as a platform as a whole already make implementing things like Steam Input and Steam Cloud really easy for developers but most don't bother with Valve's "best practice" approaches detailed in the Steamworks documentation. Even for Verified status, games don't need to use them. Very few games on Steam use Steam Input for example, and even fewer actually use it correctly. For bigger publishers, PC is the platform their games get dumped to after consoles, which are the largest market, and even for smaller dev teams, there are other PC stores they ship their games to as well, so practically all games that get released on PC are "made for PC" in a sense, and not "made for Steam". Sony has been a nice exception recently, they even have Steam-Deck-specific button graphics in their latest games. Taking all that into account, and ignoring the fact that Valve tends to be "lenient" with Verified ratings for larger games to make the Deck look more attractive, I think a "Made for Deck" rating isn't necessarily impossible, but thinking there'd ever be more than a small handful of actually worthwhile games in there is wishful thinking. Sorry for the long and nerdy comment, but ever since getting a Deck, I've also been contemplating ways to make the experience better, and I think properly using Steam's major features, like Steam Input, should also be a requirement for "Made for Deck". I actually think it should be required just to be Verified. Steam Deck is marketed as a console-like experience, but it's a console where 99% of games give you technically incorrect button prompts and don't use any of the the system's unique features. None of that is Valve's fault, it's just the current state of using controllers on PC.

  • @wamelwam

    @wamelwam

    2 ай бұрын

And all of this is just the controller side of things. Steam Input already exists and developers can use it right now but they don't. Adding even more things devs can implement is a nice idea, but expecting those features to be used isn't realistic. Which is sad.

Zoom/Magnify Feature: This is a critical feature on a device with older games not designed to be read on a small screen. I hear your thinking and you are correct, this feature already exists; but, unfortunately, it is very poorly implemented. The current Steam Button + Left Bumper Button method is awkward. Even when you do it, the screen won't always zoom in on what you want to see as it may not magnify the center of the screen. After you zoom, you may need to use the touch screen to find what you want; this would be okay if the next time you used zoom it defaulted back to magnifying the center of the screen, but instead, it will now default to zooming off-center. Nintendo does it much better on the Switch with their simple double-press of the home button approach that magnifies the center of the screen each time. My gripes are partially mitigated by Steam input allowing the programming of other buttons to toggle zoom/magnify; but, even with this added flexibility the system is still awkward. I hope they create a better approach at the system level. I'm an old-ish gamer that needs reading glasses, so I'm sure this is a bigger issue for me than for many; but, in the future, you'll all need reading glasses and you'll appreciate it if Valve does a better job of implementing this feature.

To your "demo play" feature that you said Nintendo did, yes, Nintendo did it but they have a walled garden with much more control over the devices than we do with PCs/Steam Decks. That said, even before Nintendo did this, playing Diablo 1 required you to have the Diablo CD in your drive to access the game, HOWEVER There was an option to install a "spawn copy" on another PC which pulled data off the CD onto the computer and allowed people to run this spawn copy to be able to connect to the host who had the CD, allowing one purchase of Diablo 1 at a LAN party to let four people all play at once. I love the idea and would love to see something happen with it.

It's amazing that with all the features that the Deck already has...there is still more that can be done. Being able to set up a list of Performance "profiles" to pick from would be great, that seems like a no brainer. Regarding the Made for Deck program, I like the idea - although a game "made for deck" might put off someone who wasn't a Deck user, I realize its just wording, but it may matter. The only other thing I would add to your list is one that is consistently a pain in the @$$ for me and that is the built in controller functionality. There are a lot of games that will load up on the Deck but the controller won't work right or I have to set the compatibility to Proton Experimental (saw that on a reddit thread and it does seem to work every time I am having issues). Maybe its just me, but its annoying ;-) Then of course a separate "made for deck" - or whatever it would be called - section of the store that only includes those games. Great video ("Bob's your uncle"...lol).

Agree with mostly everything except your Download Play feature. While it sounds cool, I think it would take years of investment and development for Valve to get there. It worked well with Mario Kart DS because 1) broadband internet wasn’t everywhere 2) if you were at a lan party you couldn’t easily go out to buy a cartridge for that game, 3) lan parties were everywhere. Not so much these days. For Steam none of that applies. Internet is generally fast enough (I know you’ll disagree with me on that, but just sayin) and even at a lan party you can install the game your friend wants to play and go have a coffee. I’d much rather Valve focus on the other things on your list.

The stuff they need for this is mostly in place: 1. Ad hoc wifi support (Built in to SteamOS) 2. File transfer between Steam Clients (Built in to Steam) 3. Steam API that would allow ad hoc detection of games being advertised (could be built in an afternoon) 4. Steam API that would provide a list of files to be sent/received Leave everything else up to the developers.

The TDP settings and whatever those exactly are called I can't remember I think that they don't work properly If I was making it there would be three options every single game uses the same preset every game uses a custom preset and every option uses a max preset that has everything turned up to the max settings. This way you don't have to individually turn on per game preset you just click one button and it uses a per game preset and then if you're in a situation where say you don't have access to a wall power you could then go to the global preset and change that to be a lower setting and every single game will play with that lower setting even if you did make a per game preset. And all you do is just switch it back to per game when you're ready to do that. The issue I've had with how valve implements it is say you're playing a video game and you said it to three watts then later you're playing a game and you're like what the hell this game is running terribly on the deck there is absolutely no way it should be running this bad and you find out that it's still set to three watts because you forgot to enable per game preset for that particular game you were playing earlier very annoying. Edit: forgot to mention that when you make up her game preset you should be able to save it and transfer it to another game just like you can the controller profiles which is what this KZreadr was talking about.

Why on earth are they still that bad? 4. Custom input maps for games are still hard to discover and share. If a good one isn't already upvoted then you're screwed. 5. Gestures! Stuff like the touchscreen and touchpads surely must have gesture support, yet they're very limited. Better drivers for these wouldn't go amiss. 6, Kernel updates - Would be nice to see the steamdeck take advantage of the newer kernels, KDE 6, and possibly a proper SteamOS ISO release.

You don't know enough about Bluetooth. Most cheap bluetooth headsets can't play AptX. There are better codecs than it, and the correct option is to include support for all of them. Bazzite has support for the Apple specific format, for example, that gives a better experience. Then you have the latency issue, which is part of the spec. Bluetooth works in specific phases, this is how it operates at such low power. The cost is latency, and while some codecs improve the latency issues the codecs have, you need a new bluetooth spec for better latency otherwise. Part of it is just the 2MB/s ceiling of the spec, and the fact you can't really use all of the phases reliably.
