Steam roller -v- car near miss!

Just an average Sunday in the Sussex countryside, traction engines go about their business on busy village roads. We've all heard about bike riders missing traffic signs but what do you do when it's a full size steam roller heading straight at you after it takes the easy route? The muted sound is where someone shouted a (very) rude word when they saw the ten tonne steaming beast heading straight for a car which rapidly got out of the way!
PLEASE: Which Rude Tube episode used our video? If you know please let us know!

The best part of this video is nothing to do with the clickbait title, but the Land Rover being flat towed behind the wagon of the traction engine.

I was expecting the Audi driver to do something drastic such as perform a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre. I drive a bus for a living and you would be surprised at the stupid things drivers do in order to get past the bus.

Thing that makes me chuckle it is the comments from people who have never driven one or driven one on a field and never had a proper days roading under their belt. Sometimes with big old lumps like and Aveling & Porter 10ton BS Type road roller, (not that we own one or anything or i am steam enthusiast cough cough!!) You do need to bend the rules slightly as they can catch the best of us out especially if the area or roads are not known or like alot round our way, roads are so poorly maintained they change on a daily basis. Good lads for keeping steam aluve on the road!! Its the other monkeys on the road that don't understand

I agree. I was driving my bus on Saturday 14/07/18 and when I got to Havant, the traffic was backed up and I could see a steam roller in the distance. When I was fortunate enough to get stuck behind it, I actually enjoying following it. Sadly some idiot in a Ford Focus ST decided to scream past us when we got to Havant centre but he overtook us at speed on a pelican crossing which I was not happy about. I take road safety very seriously. I forget the registration of the steam roller but I think it was something like 1169FG. I am intrigued and wanted to know the year. I am guessing 1920s as the registration is pre 1932. I love it when people keep old stuff alive.

Now, I'm quite sure there are those in life who would prefer to see these magnificent machines forever confined to static museums around the country, thereby avoiding the inconvenience to the regular road user caused by coming up behind one on the road, etc. Yes, sometimes I'M in a hurry to get somewhere occasionally, so I appreciate the frustration. But I tend to temper that against the look of awe and joy on a child's face when they see these beasts in operation at various steam fairs and rallies up and down the country. And if the car owner who beat a hasty retreat feels short changed, let him/her ponder on this. A blacksmithing friend once related the story of an impatient young lady approaching a roundabout whilst stuck behind a steam road roller. Seeing her chance, she nipped out and around said roller just before the roundabout, then had to brake sharply as there were vehicles coming from her right which meant she could not enter the roundabout. The old fashioned road roller does not have the stopping distance of a Ka,, so the end result was inevitable. No servo assisted brakes here I'm afraid. As luck would have it, the incident was seen from across the way by the officers in a stationary patrol car, who informed the young lady of her foolhardy mistake. Little compensation I dare say whilst surveying the flattened boot of her prize motor.

Abe Grimes I do agree, but I hope we can also agree that all road users should observe the rules of the road. If you look at this video you will understand why I showed two engines as the first engine went the right way whilst the second went against a No Entry sign. That is where it becomes really dangerous. If a loco can't climb a steep bit or stop well then an extra driver should be used to prevent people having to reverse out of the way.

  • @abegrimes9970

+Cashpot Having checked the Google map satellite view of the area, you're right. The short stretch of road the car attempted to turn into is marked No Entry for vehicles coming in the opposite direction. { The way the steam roller was coming} So the driver was wrong in going that way. However frustrating it may have been for the car's driver though, I feel taking evasive action was a far better choice than "He shouldn't have been coming that way" on his tombstone.

@@Cashpots as much as I agree with you as I do this at weekend my self, when your in the road with everything that’s going on it’s easy to miss a sign and it is really difficult to reverse but looking at it this was user error but then on a roller there are a lot of turn of the wheel to get round a corner at 80 turns lock to lock I can see why they did it

Near miss? popycock! Legitimate and legal manoeuver. Triangle and double dashed line with central stripe on road in front and single dash to the right. Articulated vehicles would all do the same for straight on or to the right. The fact that the other engine did otherwise is matter of choice. This junction was created when huge agriultural and road engines were an everyday occurrence

Just so everyone knows, the driver of the second traction engine with shorter length in tow, did commit a traffic offence by driving the wrong way down a one-way street. If that quick witted car driver hadn't pulled out of the way and had hit the traction engine, the traction engine driver would have been in trouble with the law. Why didn't he bother to go the proper way like the other traction engine driver with the longer length in tow. If that guy could do it, so could he. Here's the junction - www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.0358996,-0.0333143,3a,27.3y,341.94h,86.37t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sbYUZyAyuUKjHElnGjG2PJg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

David Hitchborne ah, he would have committed an offence, as you said, if it had been a traction engine, however it is in fact a road roller (requiring a completely separate "group G" licence to drive) now, a road roller (regardless of its age, whether it uses internal combustion or external combustion to drive its engine or whether it is in actual use or not) is perfectly permitted to travel the "wrong way" down a "one way" road, (this stems from their use to construct roadways so that they can travel the road in whichever direction they please) Most roller crews stick to the "normal" rules for convenience however they do not (technically) have to, Hence, they weren't (technically) wrong. P.s. Feel free to look this up to corroborate my statement.
