I hope they keep it off the roads before some one is killed. These old failing machines should be restricted to museums where they are kept away from the potential hazards that the general public are unaware of.How many people realise these lethal machines have a potential of boiler explosion causing death & injury?...

Hang on a moment, it was a modern car that caused this not the roller (the car decided to pull out in front of it). This machine is very well maintained by all accounts. Plus they all have to pass regular tests on their boilers too.

if that was an every day car, i wouldn't care as much, but because it's a traction engine, it means so much more. felt really bad for the old girl, i'm so glad she's back to normal. remember seeing them as a kid and recently a few years ago going to a traction engine show with my father, loved every minute of it, now living in Canada i don't see them anymore. wish we had more of these sole driven work horses.

The roller "Lord Kitchener" attended the 2014 Great Dorset Steam Fair, and was steaming around the main arena on Saturday. It has a borrowed headstock fitted while a new one is being cast (covered by the insurance, thankfully) to replace the one damaged in the crash.

The headstock broke away from the rest of the engine, so it wasn't colliding with the pub wall that caused the headstock parting from the engine. Maybe metal fatigue then and to think it could have happened anywhere. Good job a vehicle wasn't coming in the opposite lane when the accident happened.

i dont know man that looks about as bad as it gets short of killing someone. lol. not to insult your intelligence i promise thats not my intention. and obviously i wasnt there .but a roller losing its front wheel in a public road and then the boiler aims down running all the water off of the crown sheet. suffice it to say that can be a pretty bad time. now obviously there was a good crew on it to take care of it and in terms of the life of the equipment yes this was a short amount of time. at least it happened in Europe if this had happened in the USA half the country would have lost there minds about how dangerous steam engines are and would stand in the road protesting about it.

Engines like this usually have a fused plug made of lead between the fire box & boiler. If something like this happens and the water level is becomes dangerously low the fuse will melt before the boiler does and douse the fire in the process. Of course this can also be a problem when going down a steep gradient so a good crew will always check their water level first.

I pushed him 18ft down the road before I stopped . o dear what a shame. saying that drivers now a days do go a bit quick with the steam engines when on the road, people need to remember 10 + ton takes some stopping when you don't have a brake pedal to jump on & it's even harder to stop when it starts to slide on tarmac. good luck with the re build

+josh D. Diggity That is not a problem! That is what makes economic sense. This relic of steam propelled garbage should be fixed for what reason? There is no historic significance in this trash bucket! If people want to see the ways of the past, books, films & photographs are all there to see. The wealth is in the machines of the future & this old bucket of bolts will do a lot to supply the materials to build the machines of the future. I am one of those who is eager to cut this old artifact apart & see it sent to a foundry for melting. And for me, to do so pays nicely! And I will pay to employ some people to do so. There is not one steam roller, steam locomotive, ship, truck, bus, car, tractor, farm implement, building or artifact that needs to be saved. Cut them everyone apart & send them to the foundry crucible! Then, "Charge the furnace!"

Silver Line 69 when I got crushed under a tractor I asked the people filming to send me copies which they did and am glad there was someone filming as I had no recollection of what had happened.

@ Adrian Brown: Glad to hear the roller's back to it's best, it doesn't surprise me that this was caused by a car pulling out in front of it. They're like trucks or trains & can't stop on a sixpence like a car can & everyday people don't understand that bit.....
