I started with videos of a guy climbing a chimney, now I'm watching a mad man on a mission to drive a train (on the streets) to some other city with his seemingly unwilling family on board. I'm both fascinated and terrified.

Aye, you can see why Alison left him and took the kids. As lovely a bloke as he was, he was a complicated soul. Absolutely no shadow of a doubt he loved them unconditionally, but he loved his steam engines and work a great deal too. Alison is still with us actually. Sadly she lost her second husband last year.

@@residentelect True, but at the same time they are out of their element on camera. We're seeing just a tiny, partially scripted slice of their life and it's hard to judge it accurately. Honestly, it looks no different than most of my family vacations growing up. Early mornings piling into the van, cramped with a bunch of camping gear. Nobody's really happy for the first day.

Old Fred sure was an interesting cat. Basically a professional hobbyist--the things in life that he truly excelled at involved goofing around in the shed in a grubby boiler suit. Sure he could de-brick a chimney better than anybody, but the man lived and breathed his steam engines. The story about getting out of trouble by offering the police sergeant a steamroller to drive (with a "thank you very much, sir!" at the end lmfao) is the most Fred thing I can think of. RIP you absolute madlad, it's been 20 years since his passing now.

Really loved watching this, thank you, as a child of the 70's, Dad was an engineer, brings back so many memories of how life was so simple, we didn't ask for much, and that's a good thing, because there wasn't much to go around, but life seemed calm and safe, no technology, no internet, no Facebook or Instagram, Innocense still existed.

Definitely a man of a different era. Hard working indeed with a passion for steam. After watching all the episodes, Fred reminded me of my father where work and his interests came 1st ,family a distance 2nd. God I give it to his wife living without much so Fred could have his toys, he had a keeper there but the little attention he probably gave her and the kids probably drove her to go. Men like this are hard to live, I always wonder why he got married because marriage seemed to not suit him ,wife and kids were like a burdon on his hobbies and his $$ .

@@susanbrearley437you still have to tax classic vehicles although they are tax exempt, it’s a different form (still have to be registered) as for the MOT to be taxed it has to have had a valid one before it became exempt, I would assume the tax lapsed or it was declared off the road for abit so they had to re MOT it. If this wasn’t the case you could pull any old pile out of a scrapyard and run it

When I saw him quite by chance in Bristol one Sunday morning, with his Engine and wagon, it was a sight never to be forgotten. The sound was so unusual, I turned round and saw this beautiful engine steaming along, where there would usually be cars. It was going at a fair old rate. Faster than a fast horse could trot.

@@rippawallet Hell, I can't remember ''What year'' as it was so long ago, but on the road that was between Temple Meads and Old Market. Fine morning, no rain. Fred had a white rag in his hand. It's been massively redeveloped now since those days. It was a Sunday, as I was visiting the antiques market at Temple meads.
