Steam on the Snow Train to Traralgon

Ойын-сауық

R711 & R761 on the first of Steamrail's annual Snow Trains. Judging by the number of locals out to see the spectacle, steam locomotives still hold their magnetic charm. Only able to chase the down, but had the chance of some pacing shots, albeit, with bad noise and some serious road bumps!

Beautiful shots running along side them, just epic! what speeds were they going!? Looked pretty close to the maximum 80kms that the red carriages are limited to.

Fair to say, they were right on the limit!

There were a couple of blue coaches, does that mean they could've gone over the limit a little bit? :)

I think the wooden carriages, no matter their colour, are limited to a certain speed on the main line for safety reasons because they are older and wooden, unlike the metal ones. Just in case the train had a crash, the slower speeds would hopefully mean less damage/injuries over all, especially when the wood splinters and that wouldn’t be fun to be inside of in a crash. Think those might be allowed to get to 90-100kms, depending on the particular line’s overall speed limit. My dad used to volunteer at Steamrail around 25 years ago, and he said something about the different restrictions for each type of carriage but i don’t remember the exact limits right now. But yeah, was hoping you’d have seen what speeds the car you were traveling in was going and be able to tell me, but it’s cool. They looked pretty fast, which is awesome.

Can anyone tell me why these engines have what I can only describe as fairing panels on the front near the chimney?

those are smoke deflectors, see as a steam locomotive speeds down a track, the air passing it creates a suction effect, this pulls the smoke down to the cab of the locomotive and can end up obscuring the drivers view ahead. In the days before automatic train signalling, which applies the brakes automatically unless the crew intervenes, this was very dangers as trains could end up running past red signals or missing obstructions. Harrow and Wealdstone, Britain's worst peacetime rail disaster, happened because a train passed a red signal. So smoke deflectors, as the name suggests, deflect the smoke away from the cab by interrupting the airflow alone the boiler. Fun fact, this type of deflector is known as the 'Witte' type, and were pioneered in Germany, and were fitted to the most famous steam locomotive in the world, the LNER A3 'Flying Scotsman'.

@@TBone-bz9mp Thanks for that I had thought that's what they were but wasn't sure. I remembered seeing them on German Locos but never anywhere else didn't think they were used in Australia.
