Special K Day
Ойын-сауық
Saturday 24th September while most of Victoria was focussed on the 'G' to see the outcome of the AFL Grand Final, the rest of Victoria was in Gippsland focussed on 'K' (3K's actually) - K100, K 183 & K 190, a triple headed run to Traralgon.
For a small group of us, bunched together on a bank high above the line near Moe, we had the honour of witnessing the art of steam driving at its best. Links on one side of the lead engine broke and fell to the ballast, and it was some time before the crews had made the locomotive safe to move. During that time a light drizzle descended on the scene, making the rails greasy.
Although I have edited minutes out of the sequence, the drama of the remaining two locos picking up the train with the added 104 tons of the lead loco is remarkable. Listen to the musical composition of the locos (loud) and witness these machines and their masters creating a true symphony of steam!
(I still don't know who won the Grand Final.)

Nice video. Great timing capturing the incident. Lesson on why standing too close could hurt.

Talk about being in the right place at the right time! Great shots Tex. And hearing the K working on one cylinder was interesting.

@@symphonyofsteam 100 metres either way and you would have missed it! The driver shut off just before it comes into view but you can hear the banging before the lever breaks free.
This is why we sat at Morwell waiting for so long! Thanks for the video! Definitely a lesson to anyone wanting to stand close

Thanks!
It must have been tempting to borrow some of the running gear from the K Class loco in Yarragon. ;)
Shame to see K100 looking so lame like that. At least they kept her in steam for using the whistle!

It needed to stay in steam to lubricate the RH side cylinder for the trip back anyway.

May I use some of your footage in an upcoming Video of mine about the history of the Gippsland line, with credit to you of course.
How on Earth did that happen?
So that’s what happened to K100.
Great footage!
