Steam action at the Zig Zag Railway, NSW Blue Mountains.

Ойын-сауық

Steam locomotives (including triple headers) working hard on the steep grades and 150 year old stone viaducts. One of the world's great preserved steam displays.

Rare to see a double & triple header there. With the latest December fires in 2019, I guess the reopening that was to happen in October is now put back many years. This railway seems cursed in so many ways. For the last 10 years I have had railway friends say to me the Zig Zag will be running in a year. It's the longest one year in history. One of the best Zig Zag video on the site.

Nostalgic memories from the past. Before its temporary closure, the Brisbane to Gold Coast used these locomotives. Because of the small diameter drivers, the train appeared to be going quite fast. Not so. The old saying was I will walk beside you.

Wonderful footage, thank you. I rode on this railway about 15 years ago. I rode in those old red carriages on suburban lines in Brisbane in the seventies. Brisbane had more modern carriages then, too, but these old red carriages were still in use. They ended up on the Lithgow zig-zag because they matched its 3'6" gauge.

@@jacktattis143 No. Originally it was standard guage 4'8 1/2". Google the History of the Zig Zag Railway, too much for me to explain here.

Truly wonderful and awesome video, Of Queensland built trains working like they used too. And that whistle show with all three of the locomotives driving in sync is a truly wonderful show.

The Zig Zag when built was standard guage. When disbanded due to bypass the rails were ripped up. When the Museum took over most of the rolling stock and rails came from QLD.

@John Bias Neva Eva! DHR is far smaller than the blue loco of the ZigZag, DHR runs on smaller rails, afaik 600 mm gauge, the locos only have 2 driving axles with tiny wheels, they arent much longer than the cabin with the coalbunker of 1049, the footplate is a normal step away from the street and to fire them you need a shovel thats normally suited well for your coal stove at home...... And, of course - the DHR-locos are saddle tanks.... ;)
