Woman of Steam. Simone driving at Zig Zag Rly, 2005.

Ойын-сауық

Simone was the first woman in NSW and, I believe, Australia to become qualified as a steam driver. She is seen here driving BB 18-1/4 loco, 1072 on the fabulous ZigZag Railway, at Lithgow, West of Sydney. I was lucky to have a cabride with her, and fireman, Colin back in 2005. She is now qualified as a mainline steam driver, to my knowledge, again, the first (I hope of many).

    A very beautiful and talented woman. This brings back a lot of wonderful memories where I was introduced to steam on the Texas State Railroad. I used to be able to ride with the crew anytime but all those connections are gone the memories are still alive and so is my love for steam.

    Thanks for the great video, and to see a young lady driving. What a buzz. 1072 was built by Walkers Limited, Engineers, Maryborough Queenlsand in 1956. The locomotive was of modern design with roller bearing axles. It ran on the Queensland Government Railways system till March 1970, and when retired sold to the Zig Zag Cooperative Railway, Lithgow and named City of Lithgow. Most of this class of engine (55 in all) were painted green in their service life, but 1072 was fated to be painted black around the late 1960s and appears to retain that colour on the Zig Zag.

    An absolutely superb railway line in an exceptional landscape. The locomotive is very beautiful, but the woman steam engineer even more so. All the feminine charm, with that dazzling smile and of course a perfect knowledge of the trade: a smooth docking of the oar, the throttle handled with precision on this line with its severe profile. Congratulations. Well done Simone.

    They should not let women work on steam rail. It's too dangerous. They will be chatting about babies and dresses or some crap, and then go through a red signal or let the water get low and cause a boiler explosion.

    That’s just a tad bit sexist… I’m sure many men have caused rail accidents while oogling at some lady or chatting about something other than work. I’d be happy to see more women involved with steam. It’s an already dwindling occupation, and keeping people out who are willing to help bring it back is foolish. Discrimination rarely aides anyone

    The USA has had many lady locomotive engineers in our modern diesel era. I worked with a few of the ladies on the Illinois Div of the Santa Fe Ry. while working as conductor starting in the early 1970 era. One became an instructor. She was a very good engineer. I don’t know of any steam qualified, although watched a video of a very lovely lady running a steam loco here in the USA on a tourist line.

    As much as the woman showing her strut with that engine was swell, that wasn't the best bit for me. The best bit was the beginning shots, where she had presumably her close family with her on the footplate of the engine; not just travelling in the coaches. And done professionally. Such a small detail actually shifts this from being just a capture of trains to a capture of an experience of a lifetime. Regards, Samuel Farris.

    Delighted to see a woman driving a steam locomotive with such ease. I wish I could grab a cab ride with the lady on the mantle and me with my camera. In India steam engines in the railways are absolutely extinct nowadays. We have many women loco pilots and assistant loco pilots as they called driving huge electric and diesel-electric locos. All loco pilots have to be technically qualified and have to go through stringent selection processes before they are admitted for training. I suppose the same in Australia also.

    Hi Why is the man doing the hard work ?

  • @juliencooper177

    @juliencooper177

    Жыл бұрын

    I'd say he's doing the hard work because that's the job he took just as the other 2 took their jobs. Navigators on planes did and maybe still do all the navigation while the pilot and copilot flew, though technology has lessened some of that. There's also the flight engineer, who didn't fly but took care of other matters, that job may be hard to find these days. And to me, mapping the route is a hard job, but everyone does all these tasks and crew members can't switch into other jobs, at least not mid trip if they are cross trained and hired to do more than one job. I thought that job was much harder, as in more constant, he seems relaxed throughout parts of the trip. They all get a thumbs up from me, because they are a cohesive team from what I see here. 👍🏻 It is awesome to see women at this with their male team members, even if with a shovel in hand.
