A Winter Journey with Caroline. The Enchanting 1861 Steam Locomotive Touring in 2024!

The Norwegian Railway Museum boasts one of the world's oldest, most intact, and operational vintage trains. The journey of restoration began in 1988 when the Friends of the Railway Museum conceived the idea to revive a historic carriage train. After six years of meticulous restoration work, the locomotive "Caroline" roared back to life in the spring of 1996, just in time for the museum's centenary celebration.
Since its revival, the train has been a focal point of the museum's activities, embarking on two to four annual excursions to Elverum, with occasional side trips to Eidsvoll/Lillestrøm in 2004, Kongsvinger in 2004, Flisa in 2010 and 2015, and the Lillestrøm-Kongsvinger route in 2012. It even ventured beyond Norwegian borders for a guest appearance at the Swedish Railway Museum in Gävle in 2006.
Typically, the carriage train undertakes three journeys per year, shuttling passengers between Hamar and Elverum. However, its operational range is restricted by its maximum speed of 60 km/h, achievable only on downhill stretches. This speed limit dictates the sections of track it can traverse. Additionally, the train's mobility is contingent upon the availability of a turntable to maneuver the locomotive.
Fully assembled, comprising the locomotive, a goods wagon, and six carriages, the train spans approximately 70 meters in length.

What an absolutely wonderful thing to see such an early train out on the line and not sleeping in the museum, an excellent video thank you.

It seems that the train sleeps in the museum and sometimes enjoy a ride
Man, seeing a standard gauge locomotive from 1861 running on the main line is just gloriously beautiful

It really is, especially with our own victorian railways Y112 running about on the mainline every now and then.

@@buzzytrains9037 I wish I could see her in action, here in Queensland there’s a loco called No.6 (the one In my PFP) which sadly isn’t running due to covid (I think) and the rising cost of basically, everything, but I am looking forward to seeing her turn 160 next year.

And at a pretty decent clip, too! ~25 mph in that first clip (assuming a driver diameter of 4'-6"--I'm not sure what they actually measure)

@@Yarf.McBarf damn for a over 150 year old loco, she’s going a pretty good speed
163 years old and still going! Old Robert Stephenson knew a thing or two about building locomotives.

Yep, but only one or two things😂😂😂
Это что-то нереальное, я сначала подумал, что это на компьютере нарисовано. Какая работа! Сохранить такую реликвию в таком состоянии! Моё глубокое почтение
What a old, little, shiny, and cute steam engine! And it sounds so happy too! I love it!!
Hard to believe that locomotive is 40 years away from being 200!
Awesome! I absolutely love the early steam locomotives, and Caroline is a gem! She looks and runs like brand new. This is time travel- that beautiful locomotive hauling an equally venerable train jauntily through the countryside, just as if it were still the 1860's. Flawless. Thanks for posting this!
Its not crawling along either, you guys are really hauling it! Love to see it!
Incredible heritage in motion. Long train for such a small loco, amazing. It's like seeing a Stirling Single on the UK mainline.
Refreshing to see an engine that age being appropriately worked, rather than babied with only a coach or two.

Casey Jones better watch his speed on this little guy!
Fantastic! My mother's great great uncle (and his brothers) worked for NER and Robt Stephenson Works in the 1870s - 1890s. I follow in their footsteps in signalling. lWow! I'd love to see that running in Norway.
Long live Norway! 🇳🇴 What a beautiful engine in such pristine working order!
What a magical winter journey with Caroline! The enchanting 1861 steam locomotive touring in 2024 is like stepping back in time. Thanks for sharing this beautiful and nostalgic experience!
I remember when that engine was fresh out of the workshops in 1861, in fact, I was the one who drew up the Lego set instructions to build him.
2024/04/26: My first view of Caroline. This is AMAZING.
Absolutely stunning... Wow! 1861 unbelievable. Caroline is such a pretty locomotive and she has much pulling power; A lot of love has gone into the restoration work, along with the coaches. The long shots of the train traveling through the snowy landscape reminded me of the train scenes in "Dr Zhivago". Well done to all involved. Thank you for posting.😊
Fantastic .... brilliant .... thank you so much!👍 If No.17 were a kitten or puppy, youd be up to 10m views by the end of today .... it's that cute!! That cab cannot be much larger (or much more complicated) than 3'-6" gauge Alf's. And those carriages .... the 4w ones remind me of those built in the UK for the North London Railway, way back in the 1860s. Superb restorations. And that traverser ... I've never seen one like it. The Norwegian Railway Museum just made my "bucket list"!! 🙂
A beautiful little locomotive puffing away in some beautiful landscapes with her adorable coaches. Excellent
I cannot decide who is more beautifull, Caroline or her carriages. Thx for uploading.
What a gem this loco and its train are, she sounds gorgeous!!
What a charming sight! Glorious! Such a dinky little locomotive, almost like a toy, and in beautiful condition! ❤😊

Yes indeed, those too! Totally un realistic, but wouldn’t be nice if railways had stayed like this!❤️
Was that a traverser taking the loco out of the shed? Yep. We still have one here in Ipswich but it is in the old Norwegian 3"6" gauge like most of Queensland Australia. Our oldest loco still running is the 1864 2-4-0, it make the same sort of noise. Lots of respect to those keeping these old things working.
What a beauty!, Didn't know that Norway had one of the oldest operational locomotives, and it also runs on the mainline as well.

I believe India has one 6 years older called Fairy Queen. I’m presently unsure if it’s still in operation however
@Tom-Lahaye

@@Aaron-uf3sl I have seen videos of Fairy Queen in operation, as of 2022 she was still operational, she is the oldest being from 1855. Another locomotive a few years older and operational is locomotive no. 28 'Genf' of the Swiss Central Railway or SCB, she is from 1858 and also has outings on the network sometimes.
What a beautiful locomotive and train. 3 cheers to the people that maintain them. It looks like it gets a lot of loving care.
Lovely restoration and video. I thought we in UK had some of the best restored trains but we have nothing like this on our main lines. What an exhilarating journey it must of been.
_Das ist noch Eisenbahnromantik. Dies kommt zu meine Favoriten._ That's still railway romance. This comes to my favorites.
Thankyou from Australia. Excellent cinematography and so pleasurable to see the old working locomotive and carriages. The museum is indicative of the persistence of the Norwegian people.
23/5/2024, first time seeing Caroline. She’s stunning, perfectly preserved. Would love to see her against something like an FEF-3.
Thank you so much for this video. Doesn't she look so wonderful chuffing cleanly through the snowy landscape. The locomotive is so beautiful with all the gleaming brass and intricate lining. The coaches are as neat as a pin too. I have never seen such an early locomotive running so freely on the main line. It could have been 1861. 😊❤
RIDICULOUSLY CUTE! The Titfield Thunderbolt lives!
Amazing locomotive - and glorious filming of the train steaming through the landscape too. Incredible to realise Caroline (from Robert Stephenson & Co) is only 32 years younger than Stephenson's Rocket!
What a lovely locomotive - train - wagons. Very sweet.
What a wonderful little engine and carriages. A remarkable thing to see.
Caroline is friend-shaped!
What a beautiful beast of fire, steal, and PSI

Chouette petite locomotive!!! Toute mignonne et qui fait bien du gaz.😊😊😊😊
Awesome video of a wonderfully restored train at work. It looks fantastic. Btw. the Hamar railway station is also beautiful and perfectly complements the train.
What a little beauty!!
I just had to watch again! Magic!❤
A wonderful video of this fantastic steam engine.
Beautiful steam ❤
What a free steaming locomotive. Brilliant.
Lovely setup! Just wonderful, such a joy to see!
i took a ride on Caroline in 2019, and it was fantastic! she is a fantastic locomotive. Veldig fin video forresten!
very neat! That scenery looks like my neighbourhood, except I'm in Canada! same trees and hills and snow.
I'm genuinely impressed that such a small locomotive was able to pull such a long rake of coaches at that speed. Beautifully done!
Herlig film, Petter! Stemningsfullt! Og for en langbeint og elegant dame...!! (Lokomotivet altså...!)
thank you all .

Absolutely delightful!! Encore!! 👏👏😃
Now that is cool as heck, i have such a soft spot for these 150+ year old trains and seeing them operate in 2024 is amazing and something i couldnt imagine the builders thinking about when they 1st built that thing
Thank you for showing !!! 😍
Wow, fantastic! Riding that train for those people would be comparable our riding on a supersonic airliner.
As a train lover, and huge fan of Thomas the tank engine this train is both absolutely gorgeous and full fills the dream that such trains still exist. This KZread video is truly amazing! I wish I could ride this masterpiece!
wow she can move! The scenery makes everything beautiful
Отличная работа! Продолжайте в том же духе, наследие Стефенсона должно жить❤!
Nice, beautiful old locomotive!! Great video, no doubt the old girl has had many overhauls!
Yes in 1966 I travelled from Wellington New Zealand to Auckland and back on a steam train. I can still smell the cinders as we went through the Rimutaka tunnel. These are the only real trains to me.😎
Super film! Good to see such a lovely little locomotive alive and well - and the coaches are interesting, too - the four-wheelers are very similar to English stock of the 1870s. The tiny shunting tractor is a gem as well.
