The average drought cycle where I live is every 11 years. 1988 was the height of a drought. I’ll never forget it. We had to live in my In laws unairconditioned basement that summer, while we waited to move into our new house. Hot, humid, super fire danger. We still had it easier than the folks in the 1800s. I would made a dreadful pioneer.

If you like garlic and onions, what you could do w/cauliflower is cook it and kind of mash it up or rice it up. Then saute the onions and garlic in butter or oil and then mix w/the cauliflower, then salt to taste. I'm not real big on cauliflower, but I will eat it steamed once in a while, but this is wonderful! Maybe even put some cheese on top of that!

I am a viewer from arizona, it’s hot hot HOT here. Because we are cooled down due to our monsoons, it’s about 96 degrees today and about 40% humidity, but typically, this is our hottest time of year with temperatures as high as 120. On record, our highest recorded temperature ever was 123 degrees in 1993, and it got to 122 in 2000 or so. With that being said, 100 hits different in the desert versus somewhere like the Midwest or the coasts. I hope you’re staying cool!

Cheesy cauliflower sounds great to me. I don’t like broccoli, but as far as Kohls go, I love brussel sprouts…. Hubby doesn’t like cauliflower so I don’t grow them and only rarely buy a cauliflower. Brave souls for cooking on a wood fire during a hot day…. I only cook on wood outside in the Summer….

I can’t say I really like cauliflower either. If it’s covered in sauce I’ll eat it. People on the keto diet use it for many things because it’s low carb. They use it as a pizza base, as a sub for rice…like others, I used it as a mashed potatoes substitute. Cook til soft, then blend until smooth with butter, milk or cream. Parmesan cheese, salt and fresh cracked pepper. It’s nice that way. Sometimes I’d add a dash of paprika, cayenne, or chili to give it extra flavour . It’s bland on its own. Don’t overprocess or add too much liquid, it’ll get gluggy.

Yeah, my dad started water meter reading for our city in 1980. He started right at the beginning of summer, and he said he remembered it being the hottest summer he could ever remember. We live in Texas, and in 1980, we had 100+ degree temps nearly every day that summer.

Cauliflower is a substitute for potatoes or a starch. It has less carbohydrates. Mashed cauliflower is a good substitute for mashed potatoes. Keep a bowl of cool water and a wash cloth to wipe yourself down. It will help your body cool down a bit and make it a little bit more bearable. Thank you for your authenticity and sacrificing your comfort for our viewing pleasure. Here's an idea. Can Ron make a manual fan that uses a bellow or some sort of squeeze pump to propel the fan for you? Turn the bellow into a foot pedal to force the air through the fan. I don't know what kind of tubing you can use to connect the foot pedal to spin the fan blades though. That wouldn't use electricity which didn't exist at the time. But it might be an interesting invention.

America Eats Tavern in Washington, D.C., explored American heritage dishes inspired by an exhibit at the National Archives, "What's Cooking, Uncle Sam? The Government's Effect on the American Diet in its early days... I found it fascinating to learn how much the American diet has changed over the centuries

Yes, cauliflower is of the Brassica Oleracea genus species, which includes cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, Savoy cabbage, kohlrabi and other cultivars. It's generally thought to come from Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean, which is part of the general area known as the Fertile Crescent where neolithic farming originated. It spread into Europe through Mediterranean routes - into the Italian peninsula and southern France where it was featured on the banquet tables of royalty. All of the cultivars would have come to America with immigrants that brought seeds with them to the new world.

Yes, so much to blame it on, there was cauliflower, milk, butter and cheese! Poor Justine! We had a man at work that used to like sharing his smelly gas - one day, being really fed up of him, one of the office girls gave him lots of laxative chocolate, we were all waiting to see what would happen... ...well he cocked his leg as usual to begin his trumpet solo, and then suddenly ran out of the room. Then we heard he had gone home because he ‘wasn’t feeling well’! It took him about a month before he did it again :-)

You two crack me up! lol. My hat is off to you for your efforts in this heat, especially you Justine cooking over an open fire with the "windows closed" so the flies won't carry you off!! Missy, you need to utilize that outdoor kitchen and heck with the flies! Heat stroke is a possibility at any age! I live about an hour or so Southeast of you in the "Tax Me" State, so I will at some point be trekking over across the river and pay my respects. I love and appreciate both of your Faith in God with your meal prayer, and your love of Country and History with your reenactment! Gives me hope for your generation! God Bless and prayers for your land dreams.

@@frontierpatriot You may! Mr. Lincoln is rolling in his grave for what has happened to Illinois! At this point, I am sure he doesn't want his name associated with it!

Great C&C tonight. Justine you can cook up an old cardboard box and Ron would eat every bit of it, because Ron loves you just that much.👍 Thank you.
