State tells Detroit man: Pay for child that isn't yours or go to jail!

Carnell Alexander is a wanted man. The reason? He refuses to pay child support for a child that is proven to not be his. As a result, a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
7 Action News told you about Carnell Alexander in October. He said he was looking for help clearing up a terrible mistake.
Alexander says he learned about the paternity case against him during a traffic stop in Detroit in the early 90s. The officer told him he is a deadbeat dad, there was a warrant out for his arrest.
“I knew I didn’t have a child, so I was kind of blown back,” said Alexander during an interview in October.
He would later learn this happened because his ex needed help caring for her kids.
“I put him down as father to get assistance,” she told 7 Action News.
She didn’t realize that would start a paternity case. The state would want to get reimbursement for welfare benefits from the child’s dad.
A process server turned in paperwork to the court saying Carnell had been notified of the paternity hearing. The paperwork said the notification happened at a house in Highland Park. Because on paper he had been given notice, when he didn’t show up at court, he was legally listed as father by default.
7 Action News found out there must have been some mistake. On the day Carnell was allegedly served at a house in Highland Park, the Michigan Department of Corrections says he was actually incarcerated for a crime he committed as a young man.

A light must go on somewhere that shows a man who is KNOWINGLY wrongly convicted and spends x amount of time in jail is ultimately going to be free and armed with a law suit against the very state that incarcerated him. That degree of incompetence, arrogance and outright stupidity is beyond belief.

It's a way to decrease the population of the minorites in this country. Still the same old ways just in our modern times. You would be surprised the laws that are in effect that were created a century or even 50 years ago that are made to segregate and condemn minorites. Just look at how this case is handled

I think it's ridiculous that the courts don't even consider making her pay back that money. Just like they garnish wages on dead beat parents. They should garnish her wages until all the money that was basically stolen from him, is paid back in full. If it's not his biological child, he shouldn't have had to pay. And there should always be a paternity test before the courts move forward with having to make the wrong person pay for a responsibility that is not there's. And as far as the parent not wanting a child, and nit having a choice. You should be more careful about what you, and with who you do it with. You had a choice, it was not to have sex. It takes two, to have a child. And if you didn't want to be a daddy. Then you shouldn't be having random sex with random women. Then you won't find your self in a situation where you don't have a choice to be a parent.

SCREAMIN' LORD BYRON I’ve seen it myself. My mom is somewhat of a workaholic and worked days while my dad worked nights. My dad mostly raised me (yes, my parents are together) but I felt like I learned so much more from my dad than my mom. I’m forever grateful. My mother on the other hand was frustrated that my personality is like my fathers and likes to remind me of it. Truthfully, I’m no longer ashamed or saddened by the comparison. My father is an amazing, creative, empathetic, patient, caring, and deeply loving person. I’m blessed with having those same qualities. But at the same time, his faults are he doubts himself, little confidence, fear of failure and defeat, keeps to himself, and puts himself down which I too acquired. But all in all, he’s still an amazing dad.

It already IS A CRIME! The problem is, it's a crime the states are not interested in prosecuting because they make money off the late fees due and would rather have SOMEBODY paying than the right person be named and NOT paying! There's a video of a friend of a man who slowly lost everything once he lost job and couldn't afford to pay child support for his 3 kids. The state slowly cancelled his life by taking his professional license, then his drivers license (so he couldn't drive to even look for work) and eventually even wanted to lock him up for not paying. He tried to get the child support reduced to what he could afford to pay but the courts kept saying no. At $1,800 a month and he didn't make that much total in his New job and being threatened with jail time after becoming homeless, the man killed himself. The friend said at each court hearing the woman laughed at his efforts to get the support payments reduced. The friend also said the woman was bummed that the father of her kids was now dead - but only because now she had no hope of ever getting paid.... Totally disgusting system these courts are!

yeah, but it was the circumstances. When he was ordered to court to prove he wasn't the father, he was in jail. Most likely in another state. If the same state, this is a huge clerical error on the state. If not, then yeah he got fucked. If he doesn't show up to court, he automatically loses. Him turning himself in is a good idea though. He can fight in court and get this off of his back. Shame it is a huge waste of his time for him. The woman should be punished though.

Dear Men, 1. NEVER sign a birth certificate if you are not sure you are the father. 2. If a woman puts you down as a father and you get papers to go to court, GO. Do not think if you don't show nothing will happen, they will declare you legally the father and its a pain in the backside getting it fixed. I know this isn't exactly what happened to him, but I have watched enough paternity court to know men make these 2 mistakes the most when it comes to paternity.

This is not unusual, I knew a guy who had to pay for three children that weren't his. He only found out that they weren't his when one of "his" children needed bone marrow. When he volunteered to donate he was told after tests that he couldn't as tests showed that he wasn't the father. He then found out that two more of "his" kids weren't actually his. When he tried to get his payments adjusted the judge told him that as he had initially exceped the children as his and that the best interests of the children would best be served by him continuing to pay the child support. He was also stopped from seeing the children including the one that was his because it would be too confusing for the children. That's what is known as the !Justice System!

Fortuntely I live in a country where the system aren’t looking for revenge when putting people in jail, we look to rehabiltate. You don’t put a single parent in jail, male or female without punishing the child too, I hope everyone including you realise that. My question, is this crime worth ruining a small girls life? If you think that is white knight’ing, so be it.

  • @tekha1977

I think you are missing my point, i’m not saying the mother is innocent and should not pay for her crime. I’m saying you are so focused in exacting revenge on her that you are taking an innocent child with you. What does it do to a 4 year old single parent child when that parent is in jail, male or female parent, male or female child aside? My feelings are the same if this had been a single dad being put into jail for a crime. Not saying you should never put parent in jail, but the judges need to see the bigger picture when handing out sentences, and I do feel it very odd reading delight in peoples comments about putting a single parent in jail, leaving a child parentless. I don’t think there is anything in this case to be delighted about, it’s a sad case with a sad outcome.
