Theres a reason wizards don't often use cover, they know spells that deflect spells away. You don't need cover if you're a strong wizard. Snape deflects Harry's spell and others, Lucious and basically all ADULTS deflect spells away. The students used cover because they were students, they haven't mastered spells yet so they had to take cover lol, people were trying to kill them.

You can't deflect the killing curse though as far as I know. Hence why it is so feared as it being deadly can't just be the reason as other spells can also kill you.

Their not like guns, not every spell will kill someone, usually just incapacitate them, it's a combo of spells that does the most damage and most people dont aim to kill each other in HP world. Even the guy who turned to stone can be revived. Also they explain Avada Kedavra can be rebounded but only w sacrifical love like Harry's mom. It's supposed to be a forbidden curse so if the Magic Law Enforcement know its been used the Aurors and special Hit squads get sent out. Not everything is linear in the Wizarding world throw that out the door.

@@antonakesson you can block the killing curse actually. In the books Dumbledore blocks it while dueling Voldermort. He uses statues and other things to block the spell from hitting Harry. So there is way to block it if you are skilled enough.

Yes as we see in chamber of secrets Snape even says that the students should learn to block unfriendly spells. So they don't really need cover as long as they know how to properly block attacking spells.

@@SaintShion it is true that not every spell will kill but there certainly are spells that can kill. Like I would think incendio could kill or sectumsempra. We've even now seen grindelwald kill with unnamed spells. Also Molly weasly was able to kill Bellatrix. I think you are correct that it can be combo of spells but I think certain spells used in a certain way will kill.

I am glad the game has an original story and you are not just an akward self-inserted character viewing the events of the movies/books from the sidelines

It would also prove that the world of Harry Potter should be able to stand on its own even without Harry going through his Chosen One shenanigans. It’s usually annoying when a story so heavily depends on the main character(s) that it feels like no one else is really doing anything with their own sense of agency, just bound by the whims of prophecies and the author’s lack of vision. I also quote the meme about how Voldemort is as effective as hand sanitizer: he can kill 99.99% of all people, but as soon as he encounters the 0.01% that is Harry Potter, he’s miserably ineffective.

Yeah, I did notice that the lip sync wasn't the best either. That's a minor inconvenience though. I'm just hoping this isn't the next Cyberpunk 2077.

I HAVE to hold my hype. I can't let myself get too excited and will wait for the release and reviews. The industry is in a terrible place, and even this game can fall victim to too much no matter how promising it looks.

As to the "why aren't they taking cover" argument, this is a bit of "books vs movies" type argument. In the movies everyone takes cover all the time, etc, sure... But they also just shoot non-specific magic missile spells a lot, so the later movies turned into "wizards with guns" which meant they needed to take cover, etc. In the books, they pretty much exclusively (at least from what I remember, it's been... a while) used specific spells, and defensive spells/charms to counter incoming spells, etc, etc. Why hide behind a barrel when that barrel can be picked up and slammed into you by a spell for instance? If your defensive spells are a better defense than ducking into cover, why bother unless you're outnumbered and retreating or something?

I was not expecting a single player adventure where you can explore all of hogwarts and it’s world. Love the idea that the entire world can be explored with puzzles to solve to find new passages and new areas plus combat looks decent enough. Def can’t wait to get it

You gotta think of Wands more like swords than like guns. You can counter, block and parry spells. So standing out in the open isn't all that dangerous.

Trust me, back in the day I joined the play by forum Potterverse TTRPG, setting up a faction of Muggle Policemen and Soldiers who've seen some weird shit and are actively taking it down for queen and country and we managed to cause some severe canrage. @@DarthAzabrush well, how about the fact that if they don't want to lose the surprise, they won't? this is the issue, with magic. especially, harry potter magic. even if they lose the element of surprise, there are literally limitless ways, to get it back, or to just make yourself essentially invincible. mundanes can't beat magic(harry potter magic, atleast), without their own magic. the only reason the debate of who wins even works, is because we all know many muggleborns, will join with the mundane governments(and liekly getting their species enslaved, and starting the ending of magic.). but, the reason thats not an instant win, is that muggleborns, know jack shit, compared to the purebloods. and with magic, knowledge is literally power. sure mundane assault weapons are strong. but wizards/witches could just make a spell to block bullets. they likely already have one, atleast in america. immortality, invisibility, every single wizard and witch being a teleporting, invisible, tactical nuke. these, and many many more, are the reasons neither side would win. if, a massive war ever broke out, there can be no winner, not really. either, at the end, everything around the world is fucked, and wizards win, taking over the few surviving groups. or mundanes kill all magic they can find, and die off/surivive at best like walking dead. war of magic versus mundane, specifically in the context of the harry potter universe, literally can't have a winner. one man, among the wizards, can keep the battle going, endlessly, with limitless tactical nukes, and mind control. there is no winning, for either side. magic, might win, if they successfully mind control the leadership, but thats unlikely, and if that fails, both lose.

The community manager confirmed no microtransactions. My guess is the timers exists bc things take time to make or grow, and it's a mechanic to keep from a player getting too OP with potions and maybe forces the player to check out other quests or just go exploring while you wait. Survival games have timers that seem to use them for these purposes that way you're not getting tunnel vision. Although I think it's gonna be pretty easy to get sidetracked every five minutes in Hogwarts Legacy. Lol

Combat is exactly as described in the books and very much like the films. Not sure if you’ve paid attention to the movies but wizard duels definitely consist of wizards just standing around and casting spells at one another. Rarely do good witches or wizards ever use “cover” because magic is their cover! There’s deflection and block spells specifically for the lack of cover they’re able to use lol also there was obviously a dodge roll in the gameplay so it’s not nearly as awkward as you guys are making it sound. The animations of each spell cast look really smooth and exaggerated by the way, just like they should!

It's important to remember that wizards are stupid and that they don't know how real war is waged. It's still a missed opportunity for interesting combat though - your enemy takes cover, what do you do? Maybe a transfiguration specialist turns the cover into spikes that lance and stab the person hiding behind it, or turns it into a stone lion that bites at them. Maybe a charms specialist could levitate the cover away, depending on the type of course, or blast right through it. Maybe a Potioneer brews an acidity potion thrown to destroy the cover and maybe splash the person a bit. While a DADA specialist may not have a clever way of removing cover as an option, they would probably be able to throw out the right spells to hit them once or twice and take them down quickly before they get into cover or when they poke out of it. Having a combat system that evolves the gameplay and allows players to take full advantage of their character's unique playstyle is rewarding as all hell.

Remember that in the books, you had to ground yourself to cast stronger, more potent spells. While you can fling stupedos and such, they are quite weak if you are not putting your body into it. The motions of the wands can determine the power of the spell, so having wizards out in the open makes much more sense

Love how they just show off everything the game has to offer instead of trying to hide it like alot of companies these days. And it looks really impressive too

I absolutely LOVE the look of this game. It is so brilliant in terms of bringing to life all the aspects of Hogwarts and beyond that I imagined but never really saw in the movies (common rooms other than Gryffindor and Slytherin, a good-looking Prefects bathroom, etc.) I understand both viewpoints regarding the combat. One the one hand, a cover system seems like the default when it comes to fast-paced, kinetic PvE combat. That's why I understand why the developers of the last 2 HP games made them essentially magical FPS games, although I do not think they produced a good player experience. I think the problem is that magical combat can be exceedingly creative because the weapon (i.e., magic) is far and away more versatile than a mere firearm or even a superhero with a few powers. Not only do wizards and witches have numerous spells with all kinds of effects, but they can fire off different spells in quickly succession, quite literally make their surroundings useful in battle, and even make use of apparition in battle. That's all aside from the wizard or witch moving around themselves. If I were designing a HP game, magical combat would be the biggest hurdle for me in terms of making it feel fast-paced and authentic, not just sit and shoot spells that may as well be magic bullets.

Honestly, this looks like it's gonna be pretty great. Not a big fan of this series usually, but the game looks pretty damn good so far.

I loved this entire reaction, but my favorite part was seeing Angry Joe get so excited over getting to take care of the cat and having the house. 🙂 Also, regarding the comment about stuff to speed up "time" for growing things: I think the FAQ says there will be no micro transactions in the game. I watched another video on this presentation and on the screen with the timers someone was scrolling over a plant and the screen said: "No applicable fertilizers in inventory". So, it won't be micro transactions to speed up time. It will probably be aided by the ability to either buy (in Hogsmeade) craft or grow different types of fertilizer to help grow whatever kind of plant you are trying to work on.

The covering thing is so important because Harry took cover all the time in the books, he hid behind Snake statues in Chamber, he hid behind trees in Prisoner, he hid behind gravestones in Goblet, he was hidden behind animated golden statues in Order, he was petrified and hidden under the Invisibility Cloak in Half-blood, he hid behind a levitated crate in the shrieking shack watching Voldy murder Snape in Hallows. Harry takes cover. Wizards take cover. Protego doesn't protect you from Unforgivables idiots.

You can use Avada Kedrava, a forbidden spell that can instant kill someone and it's only used by bad guys. Doesn't mean you can be evil though.

The books actually talk about wizard fights quite explicitly as duels and they compare the wand movements of these 🤺 duels to be akin to rapier thrusts

seems like you can actually go down the dark path in a literal way what sells the game for me. imagine being a huffepuff only to turn and become an evil Wizard. 10/10

But if u turn to the Dark side, then u have no allies. Double the enemies with every skirmish cuz everyone wants u dead. It's u against the world. That game rocked.

This looks amazing, the Harry Potter game we've been waiting for. There's so much they can do with the game and I hope they continue to support it for a few years with dlc expansions and what not. Add mini-games like wizard chess and quidditch, house points, etc.

Which is kinda ironic considering JK Rowling have been trying her dammdest to rewrite the source material in recent years to be exactly that, "more diverse". But really it just ends up looking like her pandering to people

I played several of the HP games back in the day. Azkaban, quidditch, goblet, and order. Azkaban's world was somewhat open, while not very large due to the limitations of the gamecube, but you could fly on buckbeak all over and explore the castle to an extent. goblet was closed off, and level based, then order was open but mostly for the castle and just outside the castle and it was MASSIVE, like you needed way points to show you how to get to each area, which was clever cause the "line" on the ground to show you were to go were footsteps like marauder's map. That game also had wizard's chess too.

Really looking forward to this. Here is hoping I don't have to see Joe walk into frame in December and say "you done fucked it up."

As a massive harry potter fan, this really looks like the game we've been waiting for, for 20 years. I really hope it's as good as it looks.

The character models are a little bit rough around the edges but those environments look INCREDIBLE

Imagine this been like fable picking between good and evil how amazing would that be

This looks so fun. I just hope there is a lot of stuff to do and it feels immersive and adventurous. I think it’s non linear too.

Nothing wrong with linear as well as long as it’s well designed. Kinda overdue for some more genuine good level based games instead of empty Ubisoft cookie cutters. Exception elden Ring just redefined open world.

I had zero expectations of this game, and it hit me like brick truck. It looks so good!!

7:45 Did someone seriously get mad you were talking on your reaction video.... I feel sorry for a person with such a small amount of brain cells left.

In what game or movie do we see wizards taking cover? In this game it looks like you can deflect, absorb(with potions) and dodge spells.

I think the most convincing to me are the developers who are just happy to share their work here. You can tell they like what they are doing with this game. So this gives me high hopes for this game. Looks really great so far.

@@tetralesca I would say there's a huge difference in working on a game and developing on a game you like. A paycheck is not as motivating as any kind of real passion in that industry. Especially when you consider how less you get paid for the amount of crunching and overtime.

As long as the game allows you to go dark wizard or heroic saviour in meaningful ways, which looks like the intent, then you'll get at least two radically different playthroughs.

Honestly, I didn't care when I heard about this game in development. Now that I've seen (cherry picked) gameplay, I have been convinced to at least follow this game and maybe get it if the reviews are good. Which is really impressive as I never really was that interested in the Harry Potter stories or universe.

Bro (or dudette idk), you're missing out. I highly recommend the Harry Potter books if you're into fantasy novels. I know for some people the movies are hit or miss but I absolutely love the series. The new Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them is kinda hit or miss for me personally, but it's good to see the series live on.

@@MuhammadKharismawan Yup, personally I've always been a fan of Harry Potter and the Wizarding World, so i'll preorder this 100% just to be able to explore the castle. The gameplay they showed didn't exactly look the best anyways, kinda stiff, especially the reactions when getting hit by spells and such, but the world itself. That's the part I am buying the game for.

I'm very curious to know how the sorting process works. It's awesome that the different houses are available (with common rooms!) and you aren't shoehorned into a specific one.

It might work like newer Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games where certain answers or actions lead the game to suggest a path for you while still giving you the option to choose what you want. Being immersive while not being forceful about it.

This is beautiful! I hope this game is massively successful. The only thing I'm worried about is the companions. Bioware has spoiled me, but I think KOTOR or Mass Effect level companions are a must if they're vital to both gameplay and the story.

Hogwarts Legacy dev: we started with rereading the books Halo tv series show runner: we completely ignored the games

What I'm hoping to see more of are mini games and house competitions. I hope the points system for each house is there like in the older Harry Potter games and I also hope we get to play Quidditch. Hopefully when you get in trouble you'll actually have to play through going to detention and actually doing something tasking that will be punishing. Another thing that I hope for are the little things like eating in the hall, swimming in the Prefects bathroom, and being able to enjoy festivities on each holiday(an example would be Halloween in the real world will give us Halloween in the game, sort of like snow in GTA Online). Romance perhaps? I mean in Book 5 and 6(Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince) we got to see a lot of the love triangle aspects of the Wizardry world. Just some things off the top of my head. Oya, and endgame. Once we complete the story, PLEASE give us lots to do. Maybe let us age and continue on into the next years after the 5th year with DLC like the Witcher 3 or like in Bully. Just some food for thought. Also, not to mention as Joe pointed out, will we actually care.....like truly care about the characters(on the same level that I did with Mass Effect when I lost Liara, Tali, Wrex, etc).

Honestly this game looks incredible for a Harry Potter game like this as good as I’ve ever seen it

The most interesting parts to me is u actually are doing stuff in the school... It isnt just a call of duty with wands. I liked the first book the most because harry was not the master-chief doomslayer hero that he became later on... He was a small fry exploring the school and that was the most magical part to me. Hopefully the wonderous exploration is conveyed properly here that i felt when i read that first book.

Lmao. Harry was never that kind of Hero. In fact, he was rather average when it came to dueling and spell combat in general all the way until the last few books. And the skills he got there were tempered in a trial by fire and a lot of luck. The only thing he was exceptionally gifted at were disarming charms and the Patronus.

I never got to read any of the books when they first came out and I was still just a boy, I remember seeing the brochures in scholastic book ordering magazines they would hand out at school. I remember seeing the crowds at Barnes & Noble bookstores waiting for a new book to drop at midnight, and I'd watch groups of kids I went to school with and wonder what that was like. I never had many friends growing up and still don't, so it kind of felt like a double whammie missing out on a massive cultural wave like this. With this game, I feel like I can have the immersive experience I missed out on when I was young.

I think them standing there casting spells was just an example, you can see them moving around and it looks like you can eventually teleport or apparate around the battlefield

Honestly this is worth the wait! The amount of things that you can do in this game is just satisfying! The environments look beautiful! It just feels so immersive! Man I'm honestly excited!

This honestly looks awesome I haven't felt this excited for a game in a long time

The spells looked kind of limited. Pulling people towards you, Incendio and Stupefy. Maybe they are just keeping their cards close to the chest. But there are potions and herbology, and I'm sure relics, you can use in combat, so it might be more expansive than it looks.

You honestly don't need to watch the movies to play this game. This takes place WAY before the books do, so it's not really necessary. I mean, the only reason you'd want to is to be able to look at bits of lore and events that this game will undoubtedly be full of and say "Oh!! I remember that!". And for that, I recommend reading the books instead of the movies. The books go into so much more depth where world building is concerned.

All these years with these passionate demos and dev clips... I just hope the curse chain is broken and this won't end up as most of the previous """AAA""" games as a pile of hot garbage. I really want this to work out as seen atleast in this demo

The Bully Sequel we wanted mixed with the Hogwarts game we've been asking for .. looks decent but slightly cautious. Still wait for reviews

It's going to be like old school assassin's creed combat but with spells basically, multiple can attack you at the same time but as long as you keep up with the blocks you can feel like a badass. They don't really need cover if they know how to deflect spells. Like long distance sword fighting basically. I think it looks great for how wizards fight.

I'm hyped for this game, but the moonstone currency for upgrading stuff has me spooked. I know all too well about Warner Bastards and their greed, so their promises mean nothing to me. My current prediction is that they will keep the game microtransaction free for a few weeks, then start cranking up the grind and introduce options to buy those stones. I'll wait for a year or so (also to wait for the prices to come down, for I do not suffer FOMO :) ) and see what they have done to it. If they keep their promise, good on them.

Is cover important? If you're a wizard and your focus in combat is dodging and blocking with spells there wouldn't need to be cover.

The graphics looked pretty damn good idk what Alex is talking about it’s gonna look rough lol. I know it was rendered on PC but you can tell the graphics are gonna b more than decent. One of the reasons they took so long on it is most likely so that it looks good on next gen.

renderend on PC? this is running on a ps5. lol, I didn';t think the graphics looked insane but man, it still looked at least decent.

The environments look immaculate, and the textures are great. But the character models and facial animations are really subpar. Despite all the broom riding and griffon riding, there seems to be a lack of player freedom when it comes to mobility. I didn't see much running, jumping, platforming, etc. The combat animations seem... Rigid? Watching the combat a third time, you really notice how recycled the animations are. It doesn't look like they use much (if any) ragdoll physics. There's hit stun, which I get. You need your characters' attacks to have weight. But the combat looks like it'll be a spectacle for a solid 15-20 hours, and then get boring once you find the 1 or 2 combos that destroy most of what you face. Hopefully the environments, world, characters and story take the bulk of the entertainment value here. I just can't see the combat system they've shown off being anywhere near enough to carry the game for a solid 40-60 hour playing experience.
