Having a house point system can be very useful in lieu of a morality system. You can be free to do bad things but getting caught can lose your house points, while doing certain good things gives you points. It's quite simple but it can make things interesting, maybe your fellow house members may act more hostile if you keep losing them points for example.

That transition from Harry using flu powder to the sept of Baelor explosion was pretty nice

This is the game in which I constantly, and I mean *constantly* , decide to do something in particular, then I *slightly* go off track for one second, just to "see what's around the corner", and 30 minutes later I find myself in the complete opposite side of the castle after solving 15 puzzles. I'm a super curious, story and exploration driven type of gamer, so that happens to me in other RPGs as well, but this one has that certain something to it. The way it entices you into exploring every single little corner is simply charming!

​@@warrioremperor6320 I hate to break this to you but choices do not have to matter and the combat is perfectly fine if you don't expect some crazy combat system(which isn't needed to begin with). Gaming used to be straight up storylines without choices at all and they were perfectly fine. Hogwarts Legacy is mostly puzzles and logical thinking, combat is a secondary component.

TBH a sequel would not be as much as a success since we basically explored all of hogwarts and its outer regions, how they can still wow us with a sequel with basically the same exact map would be kind of redundant.. I'm still hoping they retract their statements and actually give us expansions of progressing through the last 2 years of schooling.

Just like how the first game was set in the 1800s maybe the second game is a little farther into the future, and so forth leading up to Dumbledore becoming headmaster.

I'm so angry with this game because Ravenclaw's so underwhelming compared to the other houses. Especially for the lamest house-related main quest and no relationship quest with Amit Thakkar whatsoever. What a great crime committed by the game developers. Ravenclaw's already underrated in both movies and books, don't make it worse in the most anticipated game.

We could have quidditch, the tri Wizard tournament, possibly delving more into Azkaban, or it could be even set at one of the numerous other wizarding schools in the world, such as the one they mention in Uganda. But the Triwizard made no sense in the books. A kid couldn't just say: "Nope, I have no idea how to do this." But instead had to TRY fighting a dragon or swimming under water for 45 minutes while adults watched and cheered them being mauled or drowning? They couldn't take a pass at all, else the entire thing with Harry could have been easily avoided by him just being allowed to say: "I'll take last." And the games also made no sense, as well as entire schools needing to move into the host school. "Well, screw your education for this year." If they did the Triwizard, it would be like four basic mini-games that would take like 30 minutes at most.

Light tickling as in the flames wouldn't kill them and just tickle them? Or they altered their senses so they'd have a painless death? 😅 I'm assuming the first though.

I played through the game and one thing I'd say is it gets boring fast. The spells are good, but there's not that many. There's not many enemy variety. Once you've seen the whole castle, it's a chore trying to run a mile to get to a location. Side quest or just go here kill the same enemy collective thing come back.

A major current gen game pushing for ambitious scope, content, and concepts, published by goddamn WB, and it actually delivers AND is not broken on launch? This game is truly an anomaly.

This is the most book accurate depiction of Hogwarts I've ever seen. Everything from the kitchens to the common rooms even to little things that only appear once or twice in the books like the One-Eyed Witch passageway or the sliding stairs to the girls dormitories. The developers really paid attention to every description of the castle in the books and did a great job blending it with what we see in the movies.

As you said it's a great foundation. I do wish they'd go for a more sim like game in the sequel. Go Bully with it. Have schedules and way more classes, better npcs for interaction, the house you picked should make a bigger difference, make the common rooms useful, morality system. I find it a bit funny that there are unforgivable curses in the HP world, but then you can freeze enemies and then shatter them up in small pieces and for some reason that is all fine and dandy. The kill curse is small beans compared to that lol.

Aye, somehow lighting people on fire, freezing them solid, and then tossing them into the air, only to smash them face first into the ground, shattering them is considered fair-play self-defense. 😆😂🤣 But kill them instantly? NOOOOO, that’s unforgivable forbidden magic.

My boyfriend and I finished playing and let me tell you, it was AMAZING. Our biggest issues was the endings and the lack of accomplishment from platinum-ing the game. Also, the enemy variations, the lack of a friend in RavenClaw, and how repetitive the puzzles could be. It was a great game, but we need a better story in the future. Actually let me be an evil wizard, please!!

Careful, Hermione was practicallythe schools bookworm and teacherspet, but even she felt a bit sleepy during binns class at times. But Agreed though I would need to brew some wideye potions for history of magic (the option to continue the conversation with Binns and qte of staying awake is a nice touch).

Got this game a few days ago. I didn’t have high hopes for it, if I’m honest. I wasn’t expecting anything better than a 7/10. Now I’m 20 hours in at level 22 and I’m hooked. So pleased with the game. It went far beyond my expectations. It’s everything my childhood self wanted when I bought my first Harry Potter game and got horribly let down after realising I couldn’t explore all of Hogwarts and it was incredibly linear and boring. This game though, it is just… **chef’s kiss** 10/10

I liked how I could connect to my Pottermore account. It knew my house and wand, but allowed me to change it if I wanted to. I hoped to be able to cast the Patronus from the quiz (mine is a Thestral), and even better, become an animagus, but I didn’t expect it, and the lack of it didn’t ruin my play through.

Just imagine walking around the neighborhood and you see AJ OJ and Alex just screaming spells loudly while pretending to be in excruciating pain dressed like Harry Potter characters. 😂

Hah but its accurate. A student uses all the curses and kills probably a thousand people and other creatures and then goes back to studying like nothing. It's a line that a 5 year old would use.

I had a different experience when it comes to the combat; the Targeting wouldnt target the person I wanted to or switch off the person I'm trying to target even with the target lock causing me to waste spells. Like if a blue shield stood too close to a yellow shield your character will switch to that enemy and your spell would bounce off. It was just frustrating to fight more than 2 enemies at a time because of it.

Cause it’s based off camera targeting and it’s very sensitive. It’s the main targeting it wants you to use. You could have just turned it off completely in settings which is completely different than target lock. It plays great. Not so great if you’re a clunky movement kinda person or one that panics often.

Those little Goblins dancing to the rap song is the best thing that ever happened in video game history🤣

At one point during this game I was just running around looking at textures because I was in awe at the level of detail and atmosphere 😅

Yeah, you are spot on Joe. I put in 40 hours in like a week and I haven’t done that since Witcher 3. It definitely made me feel very nostalgic. It is a fantastic game. So much fun.

Because of its implications and complications. A quick, painless and traceless death is a nightmare to deal with regarding law enforcement. On the implication part, it is because it's got no other purposes than killing people, and one can never truly use an excuse of self-defense or similar, because there's plenty of options to incapacitare opponents and the Killing Curse REQUIRES killing intent, it does not work if that last part isn't there. So basically, it is a perfect assassination tool that only works when somebody truly wants to kill whatever they use it on despite always having other tools at their disposal, ergo it is forbidden.

I also don't believe they are 100% illegal to use. I think there's a Ministry of Magic job that is allowed, under strictly controlled circumstances, to use them. I might be wrong on that though.

Joe used to have much higher standards for a 10. If he gave out a 10 in the past it basically meant that the game was highly original and close to perfect. 10/10 means perfect so even really good games would only get a 9. Obviously Joe is compromised like any mainstream game reviewer. It's an industry like any other. There are billions of dollars at stake and the publishers want to move units. If that means buying off reviewers so be it.

People were saying it's been great so far - I dunno for PC games: Forsaken ended up a massive disappointment (maybe even on about the scale of Anthem when you consider who the developers were and lessons of the past they didn't learn.) So it was great to see this doing so well.

​@@jacksonteller3973 only thing I'll knock from HL is that the story is very heavy and you don't get much choice in it. Some have also critiqued the open world but I think the puzzles were far more varied than BotW which was praised as the savior of open worlds. 50 hours in I was still finding new puzzle types I hadn't seen before. And the school mysteries were pretty neat too.

25:19 that is actually a reference to an essay harry and the gang had to write in the prisoner of azkaban book. it's about how during the salem witch trials, the witches that got captured would put a spell on the fire so that it tickled them instead of burning them. god! the amount of love the creators of the game have for this property is AMAZING

It’s absolutely insane how much stuff from the books & movies they put into this game. The casket of the Goblet of Fire in the Trophy Room, the Deathday Ballroom from the book of Chamber of Secrets, the One-Eyed Witch passage that leads to Honeydukes, & even little things like the statue of Boris the Bewildered right next to the Prefect’s Bathroom just like it’s described in the book of Goblet of Fire. There’s even a main quest that involves the Deathly Hallows!

Most of these references were most likely made by Rowling herself and I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out she was behind much of the artwork as well, the same way she had been for the original games. Of course they have to keep up the charade that she wasn't involved to placate the Twitter mob (which, as it turns out, is completely powerless when it comes to influencing consumers' choices, which is a good takeaway for the future), but I can assure you that she was, and intimately so. Log into the lead writers' inbox, you're sure to find hundreds of e-mail threads exchanged with Rowling.

It is pretty amazing that we can have a bag that will store a dozen large creatures but we can only carry a handful of gloves and can't even put them in a trunk or something!

This is the first time I heavily disagree with Joe. While I do agree they put a lot of work into the game (aesthetic wise) the combat, side quests, enemies, rpg elements were very underwhelming I forced myself to put in 25 hours into this game and I just couldn’t bare it anymore. Idk how a mediocre game like this got a 10/10 from Joe. He must be a huge Harry Potter fan or something but yeah there’s way better open world rpg games you could enjoy more

The transition from Harry taking the flume to the Sept exploding was absolutely incredible. Hilarious and well done!

It really is fantastic. If you're into Harry Potter at all, you can see that this is 1000% a labor of love, and a total love letter to the franchise. And if you just like open world games, with awesome combat, a solid story, and a metric fuckton of stuff filling the world, then it's good on those scores as well.

Same same. I was probably going to get it eventually but now, with Joe's endorsement, I'm for sure going to be picking it up much sooner.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 you start the game fighting the Villain of the game. He beats you and uses Obliviate on you and you wake up in St Mungos. Then you spend the first half of the game remembering everything you forgot with Flashbacks. Include in some new spells, potions and creatures along with making the introduction for each quest house specific.

really enjoyed the game as well, the only downside is that for months on end they teased the idea that you choose your path, that you could become evil etc. The reality is that it was focused on one path alone and doesn't really give you an option (other than being rude to other students) to go down a dark path.

It's so great to see genuine joy and excitement coming from Joe while playing this

My first playthrough was actually without the unforgivable curses. I found myself getting significantly better at the combat because I couldn’t crutch any spells. It also made me REALLY excited for another playthrough as a “bad” character. Really enjoying the game. I have well over 70 hours on my first playthrough

Maybe if they make a sequel, it could have your character entering the Ministry of Magic, getting to explore the different facilities and history, and you could take jobs as an Auror or an investigator of enchanted objects and creatures. Maybe it could even let you Obliviate muggles during a mission.

I think that would fall apart extremely quickly. The Harry Potter Universe only works well in the constrained setting of the school. Any time you explore the greater magical world and its like looking at swiss cheese. Nothing makes sense, and a ton of the magic and wonder is lost once you enter the "real world"

The only problem with this game is there’s way too much diversity

This game is a visual love letter to the Harry Potter universe. Hogwarts Castle is full of details (even some super obscure that are mentioned maybe once or twice in the Books). The Devs clearly care about Hogwarts and the World. Its sad the game got cought in the JK Rowling controversy crossfire but man.. they did an amazing Job with the game and i hope they continue to make good games for this Universe :D

Or at least never faced an ACTUAL racist or sexist person. Because they? They wouldn't refer to someone as "a woman who doesn't mensturate", they'd refer to them as an "it". "If it ain't a he or a she, then it's an 'it', like a thing or a dog, hurr durr durr".

If they're going to do a sequel to this one (which i believe they are doing it 'cause this game was a hit in sales), i kinda want a more Bully approach to the classes and side activities, wich can integrate the points system so that by the end of the game we can see how gryffindor always win because plot.

the best thing is that they have confirmed they plan to do more, and i hope they take all the wishes to heart. as long as they implement things as they wanted, morale system, reactions. being able to start random duels in areas. ect. this series can only go up from here. and i hope it fucking sky rockets.

For me the most incredible thing in this game is the castle. It was made on a 1:1 scale of a real castle if there ever were a Hogwarts in real life. I cannot even fathom the amount of work it took to make Hogwarts so humongous and so detailed.

Boring side quests, boring characters, mid story, empty open world, copy and paste caves/dungeons with underwhelming loot. Yeah it was a pretty bad game. There’s actual real open world rpg games out there that do it much better. I think Joe got paid to do a good review

The house distribution for Alex and OJ was just perfect! I can easily see Alex being the snooty know it all Ravenclaw and OJ being the happy go lucky Hufflepuff! Perfect skits as ever!

Is it just me or does it feel like we’re missing something here? Besides the school and landscapes I never thought the story or voice acting was good, I never finished it and neither did any of my friends who played it

I felt teased when you use Polyjuice Potion to become Black, talk to a bunch of people about Quidditch, and can't drop the ban on Quidditch. I just thought, "These dialogue choices do not reflect what I would say here...at all."

"It's a 10/10" I felt a great disturbance in gaming, as if millions of twitter freaks suddenly cried out in anger, and are suddenly harassing anyone who likes the game

quiet nazi troll, sorry but Joe really let his nostalgia cloud his judgement here, Yahtzee's review is far more accurate, he said it started out good but once it got to the open-world stuff the facade was revealed and it turned out to be another jiminiy-cockthroat game with the same bland copy-pasted open-worlds fighting the same 2 enemies the whole time with a lame nonsensical plot. I don't even care about the controversy but the game truly looks like shit, Joe really lost credibility with this review IMO.

I've never been a potter fan but this game makes me jealous. I want a Gandalf game like this. And the increased focus on character animations, clothing and graphics is phenomenal.

Hype/10, this game is a 7 if we're HP fans and very generous. I was shocked to see 10/10 after playing the game myself.

Well there is the The Lord of the Rings Online MMO but it is from 2007. For now that's as close as we can get until they decide to make another open world Middle Earth

I still haven't read any of the books or seen any of the movies. Harry Potter was one of those series (along with Lord of the Rings and Star Wars) that I just wasn't into when I was younger. Which is odd, since now I love space and magic; and I've always liked magic abilities in RPGs. I want to finally get into HP and wonder if I can also track down the older games like The Chamber of Secrets and the Lego games. Edit: Wow, the two Lego games are available right now for PS4 for $4. Just picked those up.

I love the cute little treasure chests with the eyes. They’re surprisingly expressive for a loot chest. The way they look so disappointed with themselves when the protagonist steals their stuff is so adorable

I dunno. It's really hard to beat PS1 Hagrid and the quest for some fire seeds. Norbert was the cutest dragon there ever was. Apparently the Finnish VA for Ron Weasley later voiced Carmelita Fox in the Sly series. That is one weird thought to have (and one way to kill the mood.)
