38:18 The fact that OJ was able to keep a straight face for the entire bit is worthy of every Oscar imaginable.

I have noticed that as I get older, certain games that would have held my interest, no longer will. But, top notch games with well written stories, good gameplay, and great humor are still enjoyable. That said, with my age and taste in games, a 6/10 game isn't worth my time anymore and that's ok.

I feel the same. This franchise had 2 amazing games and a good game based on adult themes with mostly adult humour. BL3 devolved into juvenile themes and humour and in that trajectory is now continued downwards into infantalism. I'll probably pick it up and play it in a year when it's about £10.

I feel ya brother. I have a backlog of about 200 unplayed Steam games I picked up for a song during holiday sales. All "very positive" or higher. When I was a kid I dealt with the whole lineup of frustrating experiences because my allowance was small, I didn't have a car, and there was no internet. I had the time but not the choice. Now that I have the choice, I just don't have time for titles that aren't excellent. I hardly have time for titles that are.

Same. 10-15 years ago I would try just about any game. But then 5 years ago I started struggling a lot with gaming fatigue. I felt depressed because I couldn’t enjoy my favorite hobby anymore. But then occasionally I played something and the gaming fatigue completely vanished, like magic. I realized it was because if a game isn’t very well made and something truly special I just can’t be bothered. Not anymore.

In Borderlands 2, I thought Tiny Tina was a tragic character, who was constantly joking because she was trying to cope with the trauma of having to survive in Pandora after her parents got murdered, and then she does it because she's in denial about "that other character" 's death. Her humour was supposed to be pathetic because she was desperate and wasn't thinking about what she was saying. There were moments when things got serious, and her mood switched. Now it seems like saying random stuff is something she does just because she's a mascot.

it is a heartbreaking story for sure . the last thing her mom gave her was a grenade and that became a major part of her identity . no friends her age really , raised by a group of treasure hunting outlaws . that other character being her role model and then losing him . Her whole life is tragedy and yet she persists . This game ignores any of that

Kinda seems like it ay, I hate BL3 and The Pre Sequel, my worst gaming experiences I've had playing through those stories and gameplay, BL1 was really bland and I would say boring, I did enjoy Wonderlands, but I hated the loot luck and chamber system instead of dedicated drops, BL2 is great but with many flaws, late game balancing, lack luster DLCs, poor optimization, I never played Wonderlands again, after my character got deleted all of a sudden, I got a Platinum with that and was completely stacked with the build, collectibles and chaos levels.

If you've ever watched the lets play channel SuperGamingBros, a running joke was that this guy Elliot who was the youngest of the group, always unintentionally found ways to break the games they were playing due to sheer ignorance and incompetence. Loved that channel and its sometimes non-family friendly humor. Now they are on indefinite hiatus.

If OJ was a QA tester, he would quickly become a top tier tester with how he is able to break any game he plays. That trait is super ideal for that job.

I kinda like the gun drop style. It’s very similar to how it was in borderlands 1 where one gun could last you a bunch of levels. It’s nice to not have to constantly swap guns out like borderlands 3

Funnily enough I personally like the style of constantly switching out guns but in BL3 I often used the same guns over multiple sections of the game because of the ridiculous legendary drop rate. So pretty much the reverse of your experience.

@@mac1bc The thing I don´t like about it is simply the overwhelming power they have. Get a legendary and you don´t need to switch weapons for half the game. So while they are great to use they also trivialize a huge part of the game and make looting a waste of time... which is kinda counter in a looter-shooter

10:58 As somebody who enjoyed Borderlands 2 this is honestly just sad to see. In Borderlands 2 Handsome Jack was an ultrarich villain who was taunting you with his wealth and immature insults. So he would call you up explaining how he bought a living breathing diamond pony with all the money that he has that you don't, and that he would call it butt stallion in honor of you. Now that deliberately immature insult is placed into a different game devoid of context and the joke becomes that somebody said 'butt stallion'.

I didnt though. I loved 2 characters. Both of whom were DLC. Borderlands 1 (Allison Berryman is credited as the lead writer there) has aged far FAR better than 2 in writing and the only writing of Burch’s in the series i’d ever consider good is Pre-Sequel which from what I know he only oversaw to make sure it lined up with 2’s canon, but to his credit is also I think the best written game in the series and part of that is explicitly because if how it flushes out _his_ characters who he no doubt had full say in.

Imo, 2 raised the bar on themselves so high that it seems unattainable to pull it off again. I was one of the rare people who loved 3 but the nerfs from people bitching “this is op or kills the game” absolutely killed it for me. The fun of borderlands (a non competitive shooter) was being able to be over the top op. I know, bee shield conference call nerf. The fact is, one major overhaul (nerf) compared to bl3 once a week completely slaughter a build because some KZreadr said it breaks the game. I truly believe we are devolving as a species. Look no further than the entertainment industry and complete lack of originality post 2020. Plus comedy sucks across the board now from hurt feelings lol. Done ranting, borderlands 1 and 2 are legendary and I’m glad I got to game before society slipped in to the ass backwards dimension we reside in.

All the dice collected gives you 10% luck I believe. Do the shrine in the last world and it gives you 20%. I feel they put to much emphasis on the dice affecting the overall experience.

It's hilariously more than that : +35% Loot Luck. But it's not an additive, in fact, it's multiplicative. Meaning that since your Loot Luck is also increased with each Chaos level, you'd be wasting your time to farm without that bonus because it becomes exponential. They made collecting secondary objectives a requirement to get good loot...the main thing you want to drop in a looter shooter.

This makes me want to watch an AJ and crew D&D session.

I had the same issue with Borderlands3 with the loot drops. Since it uses the same game engine and loot system, I am not surprised to see it is no different. I often found that guns just didnt improve and used level 10 guns well into level 30 boss fights because the guns were not better.

The pre sequel was the last one in the series that actually balanced its loot table. I don't know if it was laziness or incompetence but starting with 3 their loot table have been broken as heck. And honestly with some of the DLcs from borderlands two had this issue where the super awesome gun that you're supposed to get from the boss wouldn't have been worse than some random could you picked up on the way.

i remember when the humor was one of the great features of borderlands games ,not a hinderance to the story

The writing we got in Borderlands 2 will never come back, because those writers are gone. I think this game does a lot for melee builds. I think it's the first in the series that just allows you to hold down the melee button.

Alex nailed it, when you're running 110% all the time, you get exhausted. There was no break from it whatsoever. And the loot wasn't fun, I never found anything that was awesome except for the glitched frost spell with +1000% spell damage.

Maybe we play borderlands games differently, but I've found plenty of stuff I liked. Plenty of stuff I saved and kept an eye out for similar types later on.

I loved how smart the humor was in 2. In these newer games it feels like it wants to insult your intelligence with crap humor. It sucks that it seems the series has degraded to mindless humor over smart creative jokes from BL2

About the jokes, it's sad to see that this game continued the downward trend from Borderlands 3, where it really looked like the writers were hipsters from 2010 trying really hard to make self aware jokes that just don't work anymore. And I'm pretty sure that's what happened since it really looks like every single joke is an attempt to emulate and exacerbate the funny parts of Borderlands 2 but without realizing what would work or not.

@@whispersmusic6173 I'd say 3. Pre-Sequel actually had less humor than 2, and managed to maintain enough of that balance that it wasn't too ridiculous. It didn't always land as well as 2 but that's a really high standard to keep.

Joe fake laughing at the butt stallion intro had me in tears

I was disappointed with this game too. I wanted a Borderlands style RPG, with rapid fire spells instead of guns, crazy melee weapons with fun effects, and quirky and weird enemies. We got none of that. It was just a slightly longer remake of the Border Lands 2 DLC of the same name (which, in my opinion, was far, far better).

Small reply, those "legendary" cosmetics aren't actually legendary. Their beam colour was just changed to differentiate from other epic rarity gear, however now they look similar to legendaries

Love your guy's reviews and I definitely agree that the humor is becoming a bit over the top, even though Torgue will always have a special place in my heart I feel like they shouldve kept the classic censor bleeps. I did come up with a solution to the looping music, I turned the music all the way down and just turned on my own music. This may sound weird but listening to Eurobeat actually kicks ass when you're running the Chaos chamber.

The humor is probably suffering due to a decline in the script quality. There's no subtlety anymore. Everything is loud and obnoxious because that is assumed to be funny. It's something I keep feeling about the Netflix show Final Space. Loud and random ramblings are only funny when one person does it, sometimes. Not when a bunch of people are constantly doing it.

The intro was everything. Perfectly encapsulated the feel of the game and what to expect from the review. Brilliant, guys.

That laughing Alex face is gonna haunt me for days lmao. Thanks for that

I think this game was a Testing ground going forward for BL games...like BL4. I always wanted to make my own vault hunter since BL1 when Marcus is explaining that Vault Hunters come from all walks of life and are all species...Also I thought in Bl3 where are there not melee weapons...well they tried it here. Also the spell system could be used in the future to allow the player to try different abilities in the future instead of being stuck with only 1 or 2 traditionally. Also the multi class system allows you Lots of choices...making ur VH or whatever it was called in WL actually somewhat unique vs another soldier or berserker or siren. Think what if they did bl3 with 3 trees per class and then you can choose a 2nd class...That Could be a thing.

I agree with all you've said but my guess is they'll never do 3 to 4 full skill trees with multi-classing because of how hard it is to balance, which is part of the reason BL3 was so hard to balance for a full year and why they were able to balance Wonderlands more easily with only 2 max trees (classes) per character. I do hope they can take the best from all the games. I still think Wonderlands could have been as good or better than BL2 if they just fixed the rest of the most requested fixes or changes that haven't been even grazed since launch (splitscreen UI issues) and just created solid DLCs, something they've almost always nailed since BL2. It's just sad and perplexing because the game was on the cusp of absolute greatness and they botched things again just like the first year of BL3, the main difference is they were supporting the crap out of BL3, post-launch, and pushing significant fixes nearly every week and Wonderlands is getting barely a fraction of that, and none of the patches are addressing the handful of issues people have been begging to be fixed since the game's launch. Just terrible form on Gearboxes part. I feel like they've burned up their good faith with the community and even if they make a turn-around in season 2, people are gonna be pissed and unlikely to jump back on the bandwagon. Just sad to see one of my favorite devs just not giving a shit and not making the effort I know they could be.

@@brett84c Who cares ina PVE game...As long as the all CAN BLAST about evenly and are fun...I get it somethings are INHERENTLY broken then sure something must be done. But Nerfing stuff SHOULD be LAST resort...make other weaker things BETTER to bring it UP to be similar lvl of the other...and you can always ADD cool stuff to make enemies harder or NEW harder content. WHICH THEY DO IN BL.

9:31 It's funny, back during bl2 the writers had reworked Handsome Jack for this same reason. The original writers knew a character you hear/see a lot that was always joking/trying to be funny would get old and annoying eventually (HJ was planned to be a antihero support character then went to main villain) but that insight is completely lost with the new writers (Bl3 and anything after). I plan to check this game out whenever it hits steam and on sale to see if I like it personally but it hasn't been the same after the end of the original TftB...

So the lead writer is the brother of the actress who voices Tiny Tina. In fact, he wrote the character based around his sister and then got her an audition. However, for some reason Gearbox didn't retain the services of the lead writer and went in a different direction for BL3 and Wonderlands.....and it painfully shows that was a grave mistake.

Plus, Sam Maggs was also one of the head writers. If you don't know who that is she's a woke activist who always puts political agendas then actual art in her work. Not to mention she worked on Call of Duty Vanguard. And everyone knows how awful that game was. She was almost involved in the Knights of the Old Republic remake but she left a few months back. Companies need to stop hiring people like her if they expect their games to succeed. Update: she also was the head writer for Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart. However, when she left the people under Maggs had to rewrite some things. That's why the game was good. But people still deserve credit for being involved in a project.

On ps5 I was able to play co op with several friends on day one it was tricky to go co op but once we were in we had no issues. The one that did bug us was that at random times our quest menu would be blank so we couldn't see what quest we wanted to track. The other bug I got was the gun icons wouldnt show up during co op making it hard to see what weapons i picked up. Overall I enjoyed the game.

I swear id love for the three to make a whole homemade movie. Their skits are always so damn funny.

That was the most huff on copium score ever! 😂 All negative talk, gets above average score?! If the game is draining to play, it’s objectively bad

Say what you will about 1 and 2,but at this point they're the only games in the franchise that feel like they had "heart" put into it.Tps and onward feel like a bunch of games trying there hardest to catch that old feeling again,but never try to be their own thing like previous games.

You need to do an angry rant or something about the DLC they released recently. It's $10 for 10 minutes of gameplay and a complete slap in the face for people who have the season pass.

Honestly, I had to stop playing Borderlands games... and any looter shooter under the Sun because it was getting tedious and boring. It doesn't matter what universes they're set in, the characters they present, the worlds they create, in the end it all just feels the same. And frankly, after all the debacles with Gearbox and Randy and all the stupid controversies in between, I'm just done with them in general. Come back with a proper new Duke Nukem game and maybe we'll talk.

Funny thing is Borderlands humor was always awful and corny. I cant believe it took people this long to realize it

They do know that in borderlands you’re supposed to kill the same boss 50 times over and over again to farm for the good weapons right?

The worst thing is the game is completely unbalanced. You get to end game, start running chaos chambers and all of a sudden your class and loot doesn't matter. You basically need to find some class/gun meta and run that

Yep! I was lucky that I had got a Buffmeister and they didn't hotfix it out in the first few weeks the game was out. But I hated that I had to set Spellshot and use its Ambihextrous ability and converting spell buffs to gun damage to be able to do enough damage to beat the bosses that regenerate shields constantly. The spells I found most useful for me was the ice barrage spells where you hold to cast repeatedly. But I wanted to be a Brr-zerker + Clawbringer. My best gun and the only gun worth using was the ice smg.

Both those Torgue Lute solo got a chuckle from me. Maybe I'm biased cause Torgue is one of my favorite characters and that seemed very on point for what he'd do, since one of his schticks in previous games has been "Guitar solos". IDK, didn't really seem bad, if anything that felt the most like the Borderlands humor I enjoyed from game 2.

Never preorder, never buy day 1, and never purchase microtransactions. PS: Never buy anything on the Epic Games store.

@@flelllilx Yup, just wait a year then get GOTY edition for 50% off. It's not like there aren't 100's of other games you could play while you wait. Especially with stuff like Game Pass.

For all the people complaining about how long it takes for them to get these reviews out, maybe if the developer would put out a full game without all the bugs crashes. I actually respect Angry Joe more for only doing a review once he has played the entire game, no matter how long it takes. It makes for a more honest review and I feel better informed as to wether I should purchase the game or not. Most of my game purchases are purposefully delayed until I hear the review from this channel. Thanks Joes and Alex, keep doing what you do.

Weird thing about the loot is during my playthrough I was getting legendries every couple levels and my buddy who I played with the whole way through only got 1-2. The loot was really messed up.

I’ve always loved playing Borderlands for split screen co-op. One of the few games to still do that. So I was stoked that Tiny Tina would continue that trend. Unfortunately, the PS5 version of this game’s co-op was a buggy mess with the WORST UI and inventory system EVER! It constantly got in the way of having a fun fast paced experience that you look for in this game. Stupid shit that caused sorting through loot, which often sucked, take several times longer than necessary because after examining or comparing weapons/spells the fucking system would shoot you back to the top of the list! Requiring you to slowly scroll down through the 50+ items EVERY TIME! Tedious bullshit that cripples the central gameplay loop.

They really need better menu ui' people, bl3 was similar, if Playing with my friend, opening my inventory would cause the other player to stutter, I could spam open/close my bag and it would be like stop frame for them lmao

@@malibuhiegts Yes, but iirc BL3 didn't stop you from reading the full description of items/ weapons before picking them up, allowing you to better decide whether it was even worth touching. Also, the UI on BL3 didn't have the irritating issue of resetting you to the top of the menu if you examine items at the bottom of your inventory, causing you to constantly scroll back and forth when you need to check multiple items. Tiny Tina does those things, and others I didn't mention, on top of STILL stuttering like BL3 did. So no, this isn't me complaining about pre-existing problems. Hopefully last night's large update fixed these issues.

@@malibuhiegts The update fixed some of the problems. Importantly you can now see full item descriptions before picking stuff up. But the menu reset issue is still present. With that, the poor loot, and how boring the chaos chamber quickly becomes, Tiny Tina doesn't have the endgame replayability I've felt from previous games.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands was supposed to be BL3 Season 2 DLC pack, but DLC was going out of hand too big too many ideas, so devs rushed and made it standalone separate game, and they kept skeleton crew to work on promissed Season 2 for BL3, but crew as so small and lazy, thats why we got Director's Designer's cuts, just compare S1 to S2 you can see that proficiency dropped down hard. Well here's your answer.

Im 33 now.. Ive been playing video games my entire life. The whole Tiny Tina character is so 2012 to me.. You know? Its like, my generation’s Millennial humor back in 2012 and ive definitely outgrown it.. I dont outright hate it but BOY I CANNOT ROLL MY EYES HARD ENOUGH at tiny tina jokes

16:15 how the heck did you not obliterate that enemy? I've been Thanos snapping them ever since the game came out! Did you get an early release and they fixed that by the time of release? Same for the loot. The only thing that's true is that the legendaries have something weird with them, but don't have the power. The purples and blues are where the REAL power is. The melee weapons that I've used are all amazing and either heal me while I melee, defend me while I melee, or just make me able to slice through the air to kill from far away.

This game is hard........on my ears ! Toughest boss ever ? Tiny Tina's VOCAL CHORDS.

" get it right the first time" I love this statement I know a lot of people will say " this game is so good now after 2+ years of updates" but I'm sorry updates and dlc have made gaming companies lazy and willing to put out broken garbage day 1 because oh there's a day 1 update that'll fix it. If a game doesn't work day one regardless of your platform you should be mad and not everyone will want go back to something and they don't have to just because "it's fixed" first impressions are a big deal. And when games release broken and busted its a massive problem. I am going to by this game and play with a friend but I expected better from this developer. Also the opening was really funny good work guys

I really liked Wonderlands. I got into optimizing my character, but then the patch came out. Essentially, gearbox decides what builds are good and bad, and I have zero interest making a powerful character anymore. Honestly, ambi hextrous spellshot with buffmeister, concentrated magic barrage and frost dahlia smg got nerfed to hell, even though Fl4k in BL3 with monarch is way more broken.

Tiny Tina just wasn't as over the top in good and funny ways as she was in Dragon's Keep! I or Borderlands 2. Tiny Tina grew up and got boring!

What did he mean when he said that this is the THIRD tiny tina game if you look at it a certain way? It's not even the second. The "first" was a DLC campaign for Borderlands 2. Can't figure out where he's drawing this supposed "third" game from. Is there another Tiny Tina DLC I'm unaware of or something?

The game definitely has flaws, but I really liked the side missions/stories, the main campaign, villain, and jokes this time around compared to BL3. They did a really good job fixing a lot of things people hated. 2 is still the gold standard, but this is a good step in the right direction.

The intro to this video reminds me of a Duengons and Dragon's session I had when i was in highschool, our friend's brother who was younger than us made an adventure and everything was about butts for some reason

I did put the Voice volume slider all the way down at one point, and play with no dialogue. It was such a great feeling lol. Finally a break from the cringe.

The "comedy" writing of the Borderlands series has always had issues with tone and comedy, but it's an issue that's gotten worse over time. Wacky comedy needs straight-men (be they characters or the world itself) to ground the comedy, otherwise it's just random stupidity. BL1 had some wacky characters, but the world itself was grounded in some solid dystopian themes which made the wackiness of the character make more sense. They were regular people who had gone mad because they lived/were trapped on a planet with vicious wild life, a crazy turn cycle which led to odd climates and a daily light cycle which made sleep deprivation almost inevitable. BL2 cranked up the wackiness, but it also made the world more hostile and with a main villain like Handsome Jack being both silly and genuinely menacing with some real depth it all still came together. The DLC's really leaned harder into the whack though, but even then the Tiny Tina DLC had some of the best writing in the series and showed how you could take a character like Tiny Tina and show a more emotional and real side to all the insanity. BL:PS once again made the character more wacky (and Australian!) but it didn't balance them with anything else, giving us such wonderfully deep characters as "The lesbian mechanic who is a lesbian and who would really love to have all the lesbian sex with all the women". BL3 just has bad writing in general, but even though it in theory has some straight-men in the form of Lilith and others the bad "comedy" writing infested everything. So in this instance the existence of straight-men didn't really mater. And now we have Tiny Tina's Wonderland, which is all whack all the time. The closest thing to a straight-man this game has is the psycho we put in a straight-jacket and tossed off a cliff. Insanity, ho! Still better than BL3 though.

Great review as usual! I agree with most of it, but I didn't have any of the bugs or glitches when I played the pc version. Bought it right at release and it ran perfectly, and had no problem connecting with friends.

Omg I f*ing love you guys you know how often I reference that hercules *dissapointed!* scene and no body at all gets it and then I'm so depressed that apparently no one else grew up watching xena hercules and like Andromeda era shows with Kevin Sorbo?

But GUYS ! One question we're dying to know : Will Pitchford be releasing a companion book with all his unused jokes, the ones not funny enough to be worthy of being crammed down our ear canals 😐 when Randy, when ?!

Never played the other borderlands games but i gave this 1 a try and i loved it. It wasnt perfect but i had a lot of fun with very little technical problems. It wasnt perfect but i still loved it.

The reason the humor was unbearable is because this game was written by Sam Maggs who keeps getting bounced out of every company she goes to. The lady who complained about "in game virtual rape" in Grand Theft Auto.
