Starting Out With Casio ClassPad

A quick introduction to all 19 Apps that come bundled with the Casio ClassPad II fx-400. This video was created for teachers attending the 2020 Mathematics Association of Victoria annual conference, held virtually on 3 and 4 December 2020. The 45 minute video can also be found in smaller 2 to 3 minute chunks on my online courses for students and teachers at thetuitioncentre.com.au (from the start of December 2020).

Very nice instructional video. This calculator has a really thought out GUI and I think it's also the best GUI out of the calculator smartphone apps. You can understand why it's above the competition after learning how to use it for a few days.

Mr. Watson, thank you so much for this wonderful channel. I had fx-Cp400 for years, but I have never found its beauty till I followed your channel. Kindly, would you please do more videos on programming. I think this handheld is very powerful even more powerful than the new fxcg500 with micro Python. I am interested in the type of programming that allows me to write some sort of app similar to the Conics, 3D, and eAcitivity apps. I am aware of the var manager sort of functions. This does not serve building a numerical solver for certain model, for example. Your input is very highly appreciated.

Hi Fahad - I have just uploaded a programming course at thetuitioncentre.com.au. Also, have a couple of simple programming videos at www.classpad.com.au. Hope that helps. The program chapter in the ClassPad manual is actually pretty useful if you know a bit of programming and want to learn 'Casio basic'. Just avoid strings, as Casio basic is pretty hopeless in this regard. Still waiting for micro Python to arrive in the Casio CAS calculators - only in graphing calculators at the moment.

Hello Mr. Charlie Watson, thank you for your time and effort to make these videos, they are very helpful. Could you please do one of the e-activity section, to be able to do physics equations, that is, by introducing the time, such as for movements, MRU, MRUA, parabolic etc ... If you have the time and desire, I would be eternally grateful. A greeting from Spain. Thanks.

This is a Starting Out video to show common usage. CAS calculators are usually only allowed in open book exams so note storage is not useful. Programs are good but not many beginners are engineers.

ClassPad doesn't have conversion functions like some scientific calculators... so you'll just have to divide by 1000 or Define your own conversion function... see video 043 Creating User Defined Functions.

Thanks! Not everything in these intro videos will makes sense to all ClassPad users. Where I live in Australia, the majority of university bound high school students use ClassPad but only a fraction study discrete probability distributions such as the binomial. Once you've studied the math and need to calculate a probability associated with the binomial distribution I'd recommend my collection of videos at classpad.com.au.

ClassPad has the dSolve function to solve 1st, 2nd or 3rd order ordinary DE's or system of 1st order DE's. As with many functions, best to try it out and see, but in my experience it's ok with fairly simple non-homogeneous DE's.

You have to request Casio Picture Conversion engine software from your local Casio distributor. There's also a free tool that kinda works on a calculator forum on the web. I tried it once and it gave erratic results, but that was probably me not using it properly. Can't remember which forum... try a search.

Greetings Charlie. How can I get my CP400 to display an answer of sqrt(3)/2187 in mixed number format (3^-13/2)? The sqrt(3)/2187 answer is from the question (9^-2 * 3^3/2)/(sqrt(81)^2 Many thanks for your delightful video tutorials.

There is no way to force ClassPad to display a result as a power of an number. But if the question asks you to express a result as a power of n, then (i) evaluate the expression and (ii) use solve(ans=n^x) and the power will be x. In your case, solve(sqrt(3)/2187=3^x) will result in x=-13/2.

Hello Charlie. When I try to get my CP400 to simplify (rationalize) the following surds: (sqrt(3)+5) / (sqrt(2)-4). It rationalizes the denominator, which is what I want, but it doesn't complete the simplification of the numerator surds. Result: -(sqrt(3)+5)*(sqrt(2)+4)/14. So it only completes the rationalization of the denominator surd. But if I get it to simplify just the numerator from the result, it does it correctly. simplify( -(sqrt(3)+5)*(sqrt(2)+4)) results correctly in -sqrt(6) -4sqrt(3) -5sqrt(2)-20 This is the complete simplification answer with the denominator rationalized: -20 -sqrt(6) -4sqrt(3) -5sqrt(2) / 14 [ - equals minus symbol] Incidentally, I have found only one calculator that will completely simplify (sqrt(3)+5) / (sqrt(2)-4) and, alas, it is not a Casio nor a TI, nor an HP calculator! PS I still love my Casio CP400 Classpad though. It's just that I thought it would outperform all the other calculators out there! Bah! I need a hug!

  • @charlie_watson

My thought on this is that maybe ClassPad has been programmed to choose the result with fewer surds as the best way to present such expressions... but who knows!

@@charlie_watson Yes, you are probably right. Incidentally, the Numworks calculator has no problem in simplifying the expression completely and with a decimal answer too! Thank you for your reply.
