Starting Out or Starting Over on a Very Low Budget, with John Schneider, MSR Podcast Ep3

John Schneider of Food Afield has recently gone through a major disruption in his life and is starting over with very little money. In Fact, he's found a way to live the life of his dreams with less money than I thought was possible! After his marriage of 30 years ended, John left his prairie farm and headed to the coast to live full time on an old, extremely cheap sailboat. There, he's continuuing to live as much of the land as possible, and now he'll put his wild food procurement skills to the test on the ocean.
You can find John at www.johnswildlife.com/ and his KZread channel, / channel
John's Word...
My journey...leaving the only life I've ever known to live on a 28-foot sailboat. To thrive self-sufficiently by my pursuit of wild food ingredients and a simpler life. Exploring the Pacific Ocean in a small sailing vessel and re-visiting familiar backcountry spots across the rest of the continent. This channel is documenting the stories of wild food ingredients, and how to collect them, from a sailboat!
There's one small problem though...I've never sailed.....
Pffft. It'll be fine!
Living simply, and with purpose, sharing the skills I've learned through a lifetime of mistakes and successes on the farm and in the backcountry. Sharing the exciting life that anyone can attain if they act on their dreams. Experiencing adventure, and sharing it all with you here, on John Schneider's Wild Life. #sustainableliving #liveaboardlife

You said something that resonated with me.” Maybe I’m not marriage material” I have thought that quite a few times recently. After 42 years of marriage, my beloved went home to be with the Lord. That was 11 years ago. It was sad and a relief at the same time since he was so sick. It took a while to adjust, but now I relish my independence. I’m never bored. I garden and cook, sew and paint, pet cats, share life with friends, and worship God with like minded Christians. My children are not too far but do not share my life, and yet, it is ok. You have to re-create who you are and what really makes you want to get up in the morning. We go through seasons of life and once you are by yourself, you can face life and say: what do I want to do with myself for the rest of my life? There is a huge freedom in this. I also learned that I need to fend off men who are wanting a nurse or a purse. Go find a weaker woman. I’m not her.

@@Oceangirl60 -- I too, after a second chance and 30 years of marriage, I am on my own. I had arranged to sell the big house and move into a much smaller place. It was a hard decision for me, when my daughter insisted I move in with her and my grandkids, 3 hrs away from my previous city. After some consideration, I agreed. The terms: only for 5 years and then I would reevaluate; and 2. we would renovate the lower level in her house and create a walk-out to the lovely backyard, two bedroom fully equipped, self contained apartment. If I leave she could easily rent it out. It gives me private space. Someone to help with any heavy lifting when needed. It also has created a closer connection between my grandkids, daughter and myself, as we both feel we can 'take care of each other'. I've turned down two marriage proposals, but both were great men, but not exactly who I want to spend the rest of my years with. My daughter and her Partner are after me to travel with them. Having turned down several locations we are now off to South America for 3 weeks. My ex-son in law is moving into my apartment to babysit my 22 year old Ragdoll Cat. Since he has never had an animal in his life, it should be a learning experience for the both of them. For the new year my daughter has enrolled me in the senior recreation centre programs... she insists I get back to being more active.... I know she is right, but it is just so much more comfortable to be home sewing and reading.

My wife of 41 years and I went through a rough spell 20 years ago and I move out of our home, went to Bangor, Maine and bought a 38 foot sail boat. I sailed it down to Massachusetts and docked it at a marina and lived on it for a year. It was the event in my life that changed my perspective on what life was really about. I hunted, fished, explored (changed the way I practiced medicine. No more 60 hour or more weeks) I lived a tiny home life. When my wife and I worked things out and learned how to communicate again, we left the big city life and moved to a place where we rely heavily upon self reliance. Living on a boat was one of the best things that I had ever done for my mental health and wellbeing. But, it gets a little expensive. However, the ocean air, waves hitting the boat and night sounds were amazing. Good luck and I look forward to seeing your progress. Great job Shawn.

Mr. Schneider, I went through a separation and divorce in my late 40s. I was in the midst of changing my career at the time, with the expectation that my husband would support me through the transition. He decided the grass was greener in someone else's pasture and left. I made the mistake of taking him back and ultimately decided it ws time for me to move on. I had to start all over again, and it wasn't easy, but well worth it. I have my own legal services business and am working on making it grow. I am now 55 and even though I am not at the point financially that I was when I was married, I am happier and working towards something that I built all by myself. I wish you luck in your latest endeavour and will be watching and sending support from Ontario!

It was interesting listening to both of you share experiences. I’m 74 and live in a condo in Florida with my wife.(she is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s). We are here because her daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren are near. I have a place in the mountains of Colorado that I’m in the early stages of planing the build of a 16’ X48’ 1bed, 1bath retirement home for myself. It will be mostly off grid, solar panels & a wind turbine. Because it’s at 7,600’ elevation it will probably be built with 2”x6” studs with a 24 gauge metal roof. There is room for a garden & I already have plenty of storage (2 railroad boxcars). When I have a break from taking care of her, I practice new skills. I have a Singer sewing machine from the 50’s I’ve used for 40 years. I have been learning knots and how to tie them. I’ve also been researching solar panels and using a 48 volt battery system. I keep several notebooks with pages of notes. I’m also very self sufficient, I rode the Pan American Highway from Alaska to Ushuaia in 1983 on a BMW Motorcycle. No cell phones, gets, or credit cards. 19,800 miles in 179 days, alone. In 2016, I rode through all 49 Continental States in 10 days. I’ve been fortunate to have traveled through 67 countries on 6 of the 7 continents. Planning and more planning is required to accomplish any goals we undertake. Each day I try learning something useful. Don’t give up on your dreams. Have a great day.

Remember to keep close contact with them, they don't deserve to be abandoned just b'cos as parents you call it quits. They're always your kids, no matter their age or yours. Very interesting that you've spent a life-time trying g to fill that empty hole that's still not filled. I'll be praying for you and your family and ex-wife. I'm sovglad she feels capable of staying on to keep the farming business running with your son. How does the other child feel about it all? A daughter was it? You didn't mention her.

I feel your biggest challenge is going to be storage-we carry over six months stores and they take up a far amount of room. We have found that because we can store so much it gives us the freedom to travel to remote places for long periods. We have a cubic grizzly stove with the water tank and oven-its a great bit of kit, mostly it keeps us far too warm here in the south of the UK. I'm so glad your need to explore and experience Self Reliance has not cone at the cost of your marriage and a broken family. I love that you're able to impart some of your talents and self learned skills on to at least one daughter. I like your interviewing method of allowing your guest to just let the information flow out of him as he felt comfortable to share it. You appear confident and comfortable in the pod cast role. The setting is very much you and I'm already anticipating the next one. Thankyou for allowing John to share his life journey with its twists and turns with us. There was some very valuable info in his story, esp revealing how inexpensive it is for anyone to life on a sailboat. Or in England/Europe on a barge boat on the inland rivers. Its funny how some of the simplest solutions never cross ones mind. I believe quite a bit of food for thought was left on the table tonight for any discerning person to pick up and make a meal of, so to speak. I’ve been looking into and transitioning as much as I can to a more self reliant lifestyle. Still looking for land to get going full blast but I’ve learned to be patient. My motivation might be a little different , basically poverty. The best way to live my most efficient, healthy life with more options is to be very frugal. I joke that I’m labor rich and money poor. I’m disabled( MS and Narcolepsy) which while I still have physical abilities, the job market is not interested in someone who can’t function but in 4 hour increments. So the best way to survive on disability “pay” , is to rely on my labor to provide for my needs. Health wise it’s the best thing I can do also.

Second, I can identify with your goal of being self sufficient, but that goal must in part rely on remaining healthy and physically able to do work. What happens when you get old? If you get sick?

I recently sold a 28 ft. boat, It was great for coastal sailing but far too inadequate for Blue Water cruising. There are some very good YT videos on what to buy and what boats to avoid. It all depends on what sort of sailing one wants to do, Live Aboard, Racing, Coastal cruising or Sailing the World. Like you guys, I am all Organic and even filter my water... Alas, I'm about 20 years older than you guys, so my future plans are quite different, according to my physical capabilities... At my age health is paramount. Great discussion. I hope you do more 🙂

Not knowing the other perspective (“ex-wife” & as I am a woman, 81, married for nearly 60 years w 2 children & 7 grandchildren), I adjusted to moves & all of life’s challenges & crisis; I was blessed with a good, loyal, successful, man who gave me space & encouraged my talents & opportunities while still pursuing an impressive career. I had a hard time relating to your guest. I don’t know much about your personal story but I’ve watch you since you started this cabin & have loved it (& Cali) & was glad to see that your daughter & wife were there at times. Your are amazing on many level! Podcasts will be successful for you!!!

John's story is much like the one I am currently living. My opportunities (lack of) and current health issues make it much more difficult as I am older. For a man, there is nothing like having someone to share your life and dreams. It gives us a reason to push forward. It's just what we do, and if that is gone, we are lost for a time. We recover, but it's not a good time in our lives. Thanks.

Then the constant boat repair costs slowly drove him to back to becoming living back on the land. It was a risk. It was fun for him and he loved every second, but the repairs of a salt water craft. I hope it works put for him in his life.

He nailed it... "pretending to farm". That's what 90% of youtube homesteaders are doing. Those petting zoos they maintain are terribly expensive and I never see any butchering of a pet goat or Bambi. Hogs and chickens are short term to grow out so they're okay to eat, but feeding only bought rations isn't viable. Every farm with animals needs to consume feed grown on the farm. That'd not as easy as you might think. There's this principle a lot of people have learned of but never applied. "Economy of scale". That doesn't work on a homesteader sized property or budget without someone working off-farm for pay. Many times it's a wife/mother who take on that role. Few of them are happy about it after 20 yrs, but by that time they're in too deep to stop and lose the retirement package. Even uneducated farmers know math. It's in their DNA. This man can't do the math? "Dessicated"? Wheat can mature without using glyphosate. I raise wheat myself without glyphosate in TX, and I'm not a small operator. Sadly these men promote their expertise based on lies. Move to TX, OK, SW CO, E NM, hard red winter wheat can dry down by late June naturally with zero chemical application. My farmland has never produced a grain of wheat using gly-pho-sate. Chemical use is an added expense. No good farmer spends an extra $20 - $30 per acre unnecessarily. It's a shame small organic farmers don't feel sufficiently confident in their ability to produce to promote themselves without using negative PR against other farmers.

@TaigaTurf Of course it does, but that's not a reason to condemn all wheat producers across the whole damn American continent. Take glyphosate off label as a dessicant for cereal grains. Problem solved! TX, NM, OK, SW CO can produce plenty of bread flour to turn the entire population of the USA diabetic. The points are moot on that basis alone.

When you live in the city and you can turn on the water first long as you want. There’s two sides to that. You’re still paying for the water so if you can cut the water usage down, we’re not paying this much on the water bill. The same with the electric bill if you turn off the lights when you leave the room, then the electric bill is not as expensive so it all adds up even in the city.

So understanding what quality food looks like to me is the place so many ppl should start. As far as being self sustaining in TO...........its impossible but I just do what I can even if its as small as growing my own herbs........or powering my laptops by a power bank and a solar panel.....If everyone here just did a cpl sml things even that makes a huge difference.
