A Bull Moose Attacked my Deer Target | My Freezer is Full, Details of my Last Deer Hunt

As the 2023 harvest season winds down, my freezers are full of wild game and produce from the garden as I hunt and process my last animal of the year, the most mature whitetail deer buck on my property. Three bull moose and a cow are hanging around the cabin right now and one or more of the bulls attacks my deer archery target, breaking it's legs.
I explain the challenges wild animals face in my area, from competition for limited resources to deep snow and wolves, and where the deer go when the snow gets deep as it is now.

So very sorry to hear about your loss. Hoping you find relief from grieving and the stresses that come with such a loss. If anything on social media will help, it's footage from Shawn James's channels. . .He is so very grounded and just an exemplary human.

Very nice late season buck, definitely a "wall hanger" for your new cabin! Filled my freezer with a similar sized buck back in mid Nov, just a short walk from my cabin here on the shores of Lake of the Woods, about 30 min north of Rainy River. The grouse hunting has been unbelievable this year, and I'll have 15 "bush chickens" in the freezer as well before the end of the month when the season ends. Then ice fishing will start up for me! Nothing like fresh Pickerel (Walleye) and Perch to supplement my table fare throughout the winter! Always appreciate your content, especially how you don't shy away from showing and educating folks on how you harvest wild game!

My father was a hunter and we ate venison/moose/bear/partridge/rabbit/geese/duck all year. Didn’t know that beef could be purchased until I was about 12. Lived on a small island in Bay of Fundy with a hunt camp “up country” on mainland NB. Great memories & your big deer this year reminds me of many happy meals. Mother was the butcher though.

An absolutely amazing footage of your life in Ontario. Speaking from your deer stand explaining about how your hunt for the buck took place was mesmerizing to a person who hasn't hunted in over fifty years. Shawn you are a blessing to this old gal. The adventures you have allowed me to come along on in your videos will always be cherished. And the view of the clean white snow covered tree limbs from the heighth of your stand was so beautiful to see. Wishing you Shawn and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Having the animals around the cabin makes life interesting. An interesting book I came across about trees is "Growing Trees from Seed" by Henry Kock. What is interesting about the book is that they describe the landscape where the various trees will grow. I found whenever I come across a tree in the woods, I stop and take a look at the surroundings and note why the specific tree grew in that spot. The book also talks about how many years a tree will go before producing seeds, the tree's cycle. You talked about the acorns being abundant every so many years. This is the sort of information the book provides. The book develops a different perspective to see how various parts of the woods has developed. It's a long winter, you need a good book to read. Meanwhile, tippy toe around your old grump moose!

It’s very interesting with the cycles of nature that you mention. Winters of 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 we had a complete invasion of mice in our cottage in Sweden. In turn that increased the population of birds of prey. I have never seen to many buzzards any hawks around our area. Even had eagle and osprey which I had never even seen before. We have a lot of old oaks on our property and I hadn’t made the connection there but now it makes sense. We also have a lot of issues with wild boar who love acorn! They dig up our entire plot and make it impossible to plant anything.

I have a white ok in my back yard pretty good sized tree and this year it dropped a TON of Acorns. There were so many I decided to not clean up the leaves from that portion of our backyard in hopes that come spring some will turn into new seedlings for some new growth oaks. We live on 4.5 acres and most of my black cherry trees are dying from larvae infestation so I have been cutting most of those down.
