Gilmore is a bundle of energy. And he puts it to good use with his lifestyle and his enthusiasm for teaching others. He packs a lot into his time during this interview and I appreciate it. Same for Mr James for taking the time to bring this to us and set it up.

No one knows it all. I grew up on a dairy farm and learned to garden, joined 4H. I was attracted to the outdoors and spent time in the woods. I went to college to study resource management. I am a generalist when it comes to living off the land. I continue to learn. I worked at a garden store and had my own garden. I worked for a county conservation district, a federal conservation service, a health department environmental unit and finally a state conservation department. But I'm no expert by any means. I follow what interests me. I suggest going to one of the many environmental science colleges around the country. Many were once called forestry colleges but they are so much more than that today. Follow your passion and what interests you. You may become a generalist or an expert but you will have a good base. Start with one of the two year colleges if you have to. Investigate the job market. You may not become a millionaire but you will earn a living and gain experience to move up.

Please continue to share with people willing to learn and not follow the loudest voice. Ignore the rest.

Shawn, I can honestly say that this was going to be a video that I was going to start and then mute as I did a couple of odds and ends in the shop. As I listened to the 1st 10 minutes of Chris talking, I realized that this was a interesting person. I learned somethings about myself and some things I need to work on. Thanks for this interview!

Really interesting podcast. I have been following you, Shawn, for a number of years. I have been watching all you youtube videos and now listening and/or watching your podcasts. I am not a homesteader. I have been basically a city guy all my life. Although I did grow up around gardens. I am of Italian background, so I have been around my parent's and grandparent's gardens all my life and do a bit of gardening myself, but that is the extent of it. I have learned a lot from following you and it has really opened my eyes and given me a different perspective on how I live my life. It also has given me a better understanding of what my parents and grandparents did and why they did it when I was growing up. They had little to no formal education but they were very wise and had a lot of knowledge passed down to them and obtained a lot of knowledge from living off the land all their lives.

Here is the how to do pantry soil PH test of the soil. *Place 2 tablespoons of soil in a bowl and 1/2 cup vinegar. If the mixture fizzes. You have alkaline soil. *Place 2 tablespoons of soil in a bowl and moisten it with distilled water. Add 1/2 cup baking soda. If the mixture fizzes. You have acidic soil. *You can also get the soil PH testing strips.

The farther north you go the cheaper land gets. I need to get a shelter built on my land. I use ferns as green carbons. I have a list of what you would need to grow per person for a year. It's a lot. Somethings on the list I can't grow enough of like grains. That's where you need to change diet to match what you can get. I like building things and growing stuff. Any deer taken with a traditional bow is a trophy. Bee keeping without protection is a cheap thrill. Ground hunting bear with a bow is another. There is a big elk population north of Lake Superior in Canada.

Shawn, I have been doing research on forest ecology and am currently reading a book that might interest you. It's called Nature's Temple, A Natural History of Old-Growth Forests. The author is Joan Maloof. She started an organization called Old-Growth Forest Network. She is advocating that we set aside old second growth forests to allow them to become old-growth since the eastern US only has about 1% of its original old-growth. Based on what I am learning, the US Forest Service generally manages for game animals and neglects species like flying squirrels, martens, fishers, lichens, mosses, fungi, snails and a range of insects. Old-growth is often the most biodiverse of all forest types. It's in our best interest to set some spaces aside for this in my opinion. I'm passing this along in case you are interested. Thanks for another great conversation!

@@TaigaTurf Old-growth has many species that only exist in old-growth. We are discovering more of them as we study this ecosystem. Many are micro-fauna and flora. Unfortunately, most people only pay attention to megafauna. The reality is we need all stages of forests to maintain a healthy environment. Considering that there is only 1% left in the eastern US, we are sorely lacking in this ecosystem. I'm not suggesting that all forests should be left alone to revert back to old-growth, but I think we need more than 1%.

I am thinking of saving up to go on a Ontario bear hunt. It's a popular thing here. Of course Michigan bear hunters are one of the hunting groups that are growing. Of course so are the bear populations. Bear tags here are a weighted lottery. The more points you have the more likely to get a bear license.
