Starting another 38.8 liter V12 tank engine!

This is another 38.8 liter V12 tank engine just like the one we started the last time! But we build a cooling system around this one to keep it running longer.

    Hello. From my side I got the feeling that this engine is more responsive and also produce less smoke at startup then the orginial T69 one. That could be interesting to consider the swap. Of course, I remember that you and Dirk spent a lot of time restoring the original engine and let it literally come back from the death, with limited assets at this time. So I can understand that this engine matter for you,. But this also can let the T69 more interesting to drive after. So something to consider after all.

    Short burst will have much more diesel injected than air can be taken in. That makes smoke. Also under full load uncontrolled injection like on this type of engine will show too much fuel injected in ratio with air taken in. That means also SMOKE. Only thing to make it (a bit) better is to turbo it. That makes it possible to have always plenty of air when under load (and makes also more power).

    @@nickvervoorn Yeah, but if it runs it shouldn't: there is no vacuum in the intake because there is no throttle. I have a Dodge from 1943, petrol, whithout valve seals, which doesn't burn oil. Of course it will burn some oil. But most smoke is unburned fuel I think. Especially when you hit the pedal from idle: massive overfueling granted.

  • @keithammleter3824

    @keithammleter3824

    Жыл бұрын

    Car Los, you have it backwards. Diesels with turbos make smoke on sudden bursts, because the turbo has been running at reduced speed and takes time to spool up. In a non-turbo engine, maximum air is getting in at all times, and since it shouldn't smoke when run wide open, it will not smoke on sudden bursts either. This engine makes extra smoke on sudden burst because it is badly worn, and oil is accumulating in the cylinders when not run wide open. On opening up, that accumulated oil is burnt off. On diesel engines that are required to have very quick response to sudden load increases, turbos with waste gates are used. In such cases, basically a very large capacity turbo is used, to push in plenty of air even at high idle. This would mean far too much air at full load, and too much stress on the turbo, so the waste gate automatically opens to let some exhaust gas bypass the turbo.

    All these engines seem to have way to much fuel going through the pumps. as well as lack of valve stem seals. Since they are not going to be used for war and power is not that big a factor, cant they turn the pumps down as well as come up with some sort of valve seal for both economy and less smoke?

  • @Hjerte_Verke

    @Hjerte_Verke

    These engines have no smog pumps, EGR valves nor anything to mitigate wasted fuel or blow-by. I've seen these engines in combat and they smoke less than the one in Emile's T69. It is safe to say he's got a batch of well-used engines so far. Would love to see them all running to see which is the best one. Tanks in combat are run for very long times on end, lots of idling where they are allowed to get up to operating temperature and excess oil and diesel gets burned off in the complete exhaust system. This one has just the manifolds mounted so I suspect it's not cooking off the excess like it normally would

You can even look at an Iraqi army tank in kzread.info/dash/bejne/g5Z3k9WdiqjepLw.html - it smokes when they start it and gun the engine, but it is NOWHERE near as bad as Milo's tank.

    @@keithammleter3824 Yes, I would expect it to smoke on the overrun if it was leaking mostly through the valves. It may also be overfuelling. Nothing short of a complete rebuild, with modern machining for the rebores, properly refurbished injectors and the addition of some sort of sealing system for the valve stems, is going to stop the excessive smoking. There is no excuse for it to be like that, although it will be expensive to rectify.

    Yes, these are all from a batch purchase he made. His ultimate goal is to sell off the Type 69 but keep the WZT-2 because it is more practical (crane and dozer blade), I understand, so having that tired old engine replaced with one of these seems like the best bet. The original Saddam Hussein engine does deserve some new cylinder liners, pistons and rings for a better result but I imagine it isn't cost effective.

    Har har har. Ukraine needs it more since their military might has been wasted away in frontal, human wave assaults. In fact armor is a bad idea as Russia just wipes it out with artillery or via air assault.

    1) There has to be a number of older gentlemen, in Western Europe, who served in various militaries repairing T-54/55s. Have you received any comments or suggestions from any? 2) There could very well be Chinese living in Europe who did such work while serving in the People's Liberation Army. 3) Have any retired employees from Factory 617-Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group Corporation left any comments?

    Is this a petrol or diesel? I am assuming diesel considering the blase response to an injector line just spraying fuel over the top of the engine there... (not that diesel doesn't burn, it just doesnt produce explosive vapour...)

    wouldn't it be quite easy to take valve stem seals from some other engine and use it on yours ? :) I don't see if that would be any problem, shouldn't even need to disassemble a lot either to do that :)

  • @billhanson4921

    @billhanson4921

    no, you'd probably have to rip the valve out and machine the valve guides to take them, would be a big job, and anyway, its probably built like that so that you don't need as many oil changes because you're constantly topping up, honestly i put nothing past old soviet engineering 😁
