RIP Farrah Fawcett and Marcello Mastroiani

I just realized, I've heard of Star Wars winning all these Oscar's but I've never actually seen any of it till now, and I'm a big fan too seeing the original trilogy as a child.

wasnt marcia lucas responsible for a lot of the death star battle scene? she deserves to be remembered.

I'm watching in 2021, also I read his book yesterday which also has the behind the scenes story. I think it's very touching that he was so flustered he forgot to thank his brother Chuck, and basically never lived it down ;)

so well deserved, the fact that this movie didnt win best screenplay, director and picture is an absolute crime

Even disregarding the “saved in the edit” story this is still one the best edited films ever made

That wasn't LUCAS's first cut. It was the first cut of an editor in England who wouldn't cut it the way he wanted it. He had to fire the guy. The 3 editors who won cut it the way he wanted it, he supervised them.

Shame on the Oscars for not including Farrah in the tribute this year. They included Michael Jackson, but not Farrah even though MJ did barely any acting work. Where's the logic?

Coming here after reading Paul's book! I can feel his heart beating in his acceptance speech, Marcia said George didn't want to be thanked! (you can kind of see it in her reaction!) They agreed to speak in the order they were credited, but once Paul was done Marcia said after that he thanked everyone and she had no one to add. Richard just followed suit. Paul has said it is one of his biggest regrets not mentioning his family, especially his brother. It's a wonderful book for any aspiring editor or film-fanatic! Highly recommend! :-)

Thanks for the recommendation of Paul’s book. I must read it. I liked the fact that he thanked Brian DePalma. Paul’s editing on Carrie was brilliant as well.

She is truly stunning. Born in the '90s, I wasn't really aware of her, until I saw a Barbara Walters special on the day she died. It made me go to the bathroom and cry my eyes out. Truly a beautiful human being with a beautiful heart.

Interesting side note to this award. Farrah had just left TV for the movies. She was BIG, really BIG. She demanded a BIG mane as her co-presenter. She wanted Olivier or Brando!! She (or her people) nixed Henry Winkler, Jeff Bridges & others. This was her big entry into film stardom. When the world's 2 best actors proved unavailable, she grudgingly settled on nominee Marcello. Then SOMEBODY KILLED HER HUSBAND opened followed by SUNBURN and the rest is history.

Star Wars has great film editing.

jwelch5742 That’s an understatement. The Battle of Yavin, mostly edited by Marcia it’s been said, is still one of the most complex and intense sequences ever edited.

@funnybone1959 Annie Hall won that year, i think it deserved it, best Woody Allen film. I love Star Wars too though, but in a different way i guess. The other Noms were Julia, The Goodbye Girl and The Turning Point.

Marcia Lucas......supposedly she was heavily responsible for the Death Star battle scene...as well as helping to bring warmth and a 'human' face to the SW films........and supposedly didn't quite "take off" on George so suddenly as the story goes........now just a footnote in cinema history. At least that's what I heard.....

Odd that Ralph Rosenblum wasn't nominated for Editing "Annie Hall" (1977's Best Picture winner). He did win the BAFTA award though.

He has working with Emmy/Oscar winning filmmaker Edward Zwick since 1975. His wife, Debbie Rosenblum, who was an assistant film editor.

Farrah was good enough to present a award but was not memorialized on the telecast after her passing because she was too "TV".

But too bad he always in competition with huge holywood actors like Michael Douglas at one time. and the other two actors i dont quitely remember who beat him on the category. Well, at least he's well respected as one of the greatest european actors of all times.

the academy always messed up talents, how long did Barbara Stanwyck & many many great Stars had to wait to finally get an honorary oscar just before they died!!! & how many never got recognition ! Susan Hayward waited 25 yrs before she got one for" I Want To Live" Marcello was a Damn great ACTOR an never got recognition from hollywood that sucks...

@leafyutube There was no logic. It was done on purpose for some people to get upset at the thought of MJ getting a tribute over Farrah. Clearly, Farrah should have been in the tribute because of her body of work as an actress in film. It was just ignorant yet typical Hollywood bs to start a minor uproar over two decease individuals. Even the excuse for Farrah's exclusion given by the Academy was stupid. Nowadays, the media is all around bizarre and predicable.

If it wasn't for their editing of Lucas crap, even Star Wars 4 would have been off/bad. Watch the deleted scenes & his first cut before they fixed it.

She fixed the mess of the star wars film her husband directed. Im happy she got credit.

This is the woman who was close enough to George Lucas to override his autistic decisions. George Lucas probably suffers from Asperger's Syndrome, honestly. Marcia was able to inject emotion into the original Star Wars in ways that were LITERALLY incomprehensible to George -- he truly does not understand emotion... at all. AT ALL. The man has serious, serious mental issues. That in itself doesn't make him a bad person, but it does make him something different than what he pretends to be. You'll notice that many, many Star Wars prequel fans are also autistic.

STAR WARS ruined movies. The first blockbuster that every studio in Hollywood has been trying to duplicate ever since. Look at all the other (great) movies nominated in the 70s. NONE of them would be made by Hollywood now. Because of STAR WARS.

***** You're right and you're wrong. You're right that it was actually Jaws that started the whole blockbuster mentality. But you're wrong if you think they still make movies like Network or French Connection or Taxi Driver or Chinatown or Last Detail or etc, etc, etc. At least not by the major studios in Hollywood. Hollywood doesn't make "art" movies anymore (aka: any movie that isn't laden with cgi, car crashes, explosions, superheroes, brand familiarity AND aka: 90% of all movies made in the golden age of Hollywood). Yes, there are some "art" movies being made independently of Hollywood.

***** 95% of what Hollywood studios make now are big tentpole blockbusters. It takes a HUGE name like Scorsese or Spielberg or Eastwood to make those "passion pieces" you mentioned. So any director/producer/actor w/o iconic legendary status is NOT going to get a "passion piece" made (and even most of THEM won't get a "passion piece" made). So what are the chances of new directors getting something like that made? ZILCH. And I disagree that there aren't great screenplays being written. The talent has always been there. The difference is that in the 70s, the suits allowed the "talent" to make the movies they wanted instead of nowadays where the five major Hollywood studios are just one arm of a corporate conglomerate that is only interested in monetizing a movie that can return billions of dollars on their investment. I will agree it probably would have happened regardless of Jaws & Star Wars. Corporate greed has ruined everything. No reason to think movies would be any different.

You can tell something's wrong when the editor who made all the actual decisions not only doesn't get to give a speech for her own Oscar, but is forced to accept it when her abusive husband who is already taking all the credit for her work is thanked.
