Originally, they just wanted to script. Without Stallone. They were thinking of Steve McQueen Robert Redford. Or Paul Newman? Although he was broke at the time. And had a beat-up car. He rolled up the dice and insisted. That he could do it. Wow. Without Rocky there be no Rambo.

yes indeed, Rocky and Rambo those films inspired a lot of people to train and do sports..in the 80s my Uncle had the exact same hair like Stallone in Rambo 2, and he trained like crazy just because he wanted to look like Rambo or Rocky :D

Sylvester Stallone didn't even wanna go up, he had to be dragged up, truly the most humble actor I've ever seen. A real role-model for everyone

I love how Chartoff and Winkler brought Stallone on stage with them. It was as much his victory as it was theirs.

Sam T , you are so right. This movie has so much meaning for me. My Freshman year of high school, our Varsity track coach took the entire track team to see this movie. I have no idea how he pulled this off. Never-the-less, we were so inspired by this movie, put in the work, and in the end went undefeated. I will always relate this movie to that time. The music score,is,one that has played in my head so many times while I ran.

And Bill Conti wasn't even nominated for the Best Original Score Oscar. (Though, having just re-watched the film, I can kinda see why. There's less score than you remember, however undeniably *_iconic_* it remains.) At least Conti went on to win for _The Right Stuff._

Done with you , I appreciate your opinion, and would have bet my life that would be your rebuttal, but Star Wars is and has always been geared towards a certain demographic, specifically the Sci-Fi crowd, while Rocky was endeared by every age and sex across the spectrum. Gonna Fly Now hit #1 on the Billboard chart while the Theme from Star Wars topped out at #10. I’m not saying you’re wrong, they are both amazing, I’m just making a defense.

I remember! I remember watching that show - and particularly that moment - on live TV back in '77 when the Oscars aired. ... wayyyyy back in my high school days. I remember watching Rocky in the movie theaters when it 1st came out. I DO recall hearing Sly Stalone had a small 1 room apartmant in New York sometime prior to this film, where he wrote it. Good memories!

Recognise: every single film up for Best Picture that year, won an Oscar - in another category.... @@lewis7515 Yes for it's cinematography that is (for which it won for Best Cinematography). Bound for Glory was nothing remarkable besides that and seems to be a forgotten film in modern time probably for a reason that being because the storytelling seem mostly generic. Actually Taxi Driver didn't win for any category which I personally think is the best from the nominees. But to correct you on these titles you are mentioning is films of 1976 instead of 1977. The Academy for these films is in 1977 that would be.

"And to all the Rocky's in the world, I love you". He wrote this for him and everyone else with heart and undying will power. Thank you Sylvester.

Like musicians of course they need money and that's part of the reason they do it but passion heart and soul, talent all play a part. Rocky would not be so revered without all of that.

Everyone loves Rocky but in fact all the most iconic stuff that everyone remembers and associates with Rocky actually happens in Rocky 2 - yo adrian, I did it, the jogging scene with everyone following, what are we waiting for?? etc etc. There's the training with the meat as punch bags in Rocky 1 though.

I always felt Stallone should of got an Oscar for Rocky. He nailed that character.

In hindsight, yes Peter Finch was amazing, but yeah Stallone should've had this one. He gets ripped for not being a good actor, but anytime he's Rocky, his acting goes up 10 notches. He's so into that character and it's such a grounded in reality role, he nails it every time. 2 oscar noms for the same character is rare and he created an icon that transcends film.

I would like to just add that Bill Conti's musical score for this great picture was brilliant . The Rocky theme is recognized by people around the world everywhere . Everything contributes to the success of a great motion picture and the musical score is sometimes so underrated or goes unsung a little too frequently . Bill Conti's Rocky theme was superb. It was inspirational in and of itself, and contributes to the notion of human personal victory . It is perfectly married to the subject matter of the film .

He did an interview on the Oprah show and he didn’t think that he rocky was going to win anything. If he had known he would’ve put his bow tie back on ( anxiety, anxiousness and humidity had him sweating so he took off his bow tie) and maybe wrote something. He didn’t want to go on stage he was pulled towards the stage. If you listen carefully you can here Stallone say “ no I’m good here “ I believe the guy on his right asked or told him to come closer or to exchange places. If you watch him he keeps blinking, looking up and around and almost like he’s outta breath.

In 1976 my Italian friend and I went to see "Rocky" at the theater on a rainy Saturday. We were in the 11th grade in HS. She had a huge crush on Sylvester Stallone; I think she went back a couple more times, lol. The mid-1970s were weird, but this movie was inspiring, heartfelt, and watching it in a 900-seat first-run theater that was almost filled to capacity was thrilling...

I was 15 when I saw it in Northeast Philadelphia. The entire audience was on their feet in (including me and my friend) cheering “Rocky! Rocky!” along with the movie at the end.

@James Bryan Well Rocky is my favorite movie so I figured I'd say something, but there was something I have correct you on. Stallone did not direct Rocky is was John Avildsen (who also, directed Karate Kid), just saying. As for why it's better, I mean film is art it's not objective. Some people just prefer the more humble, light hearted and frankly more relatable story of Rocky over Taxi Driver. Those characters are iconic. Rocky, Apollo, Paulie, Adrian and Mickey in my opinion are all classic characters that stand the test of time even people nowadays remember them much more so than the cast in Taxi Driver. In terms of writing again it's all subjective it just depends on what types of stories appeal to you more, clearly the themes of Taxi Driver resonate more with you than Rocky's do, but for a lot of people Rocky is a character that every one of us can relate to. It's the ultimate underdog story and everyone feels like the underdog in their own lives so it just clicks with people. It's ultimately a love story, which is much more of a crowd pleaser. Cinematography in both movies are great, Rocky invented the steady cam or was at least was one of the first movies to use it. Making a lot of those great tracking shots of him running through Phili possible. That shot of him on the steps is amazing, also symbolic of his journey throughout the movie. So pretty innovative stuff there. Editing is a tough one but both do it well, one of my favorite very subtle edits in Rocky is after Rocky and Adrian sleep together the next shot in the film is a shot of Rocky's legs a call back to earlier in the movie when Mickey says "woman weaken legs" just a cool touch. Sound? I mean, come on Bill Conti's score in Rocky is one of the greatest of all time, Rocky in my opinion kills Taxi Driver in the score department. Sound design is great in Taxi Driver though and finally acting once again if you're only pitting Stallone against De Niro sure you could say he's better than Stallone, but Rocky also has Carl Weathers, Burt Young, Talia Shire and Burgess Meredith absolutely killing it a much more memorable cast in Rocky than in Taxi Driver, not that the supporting cast is bad in Taxi Driver, but they're not as prominent as the cast in Rocky. Anyways, that's just one guys opinion, but Rocky is a huge inspiration for me personally. As someone who wants to direct movies someday that story just speaks to me. Not that I could make something as great as these masterpieces, but certainly inspiring.

Just think, a little over a year before this Stallone was dirt poor and now winning an academy award for a movie he wrote and starred in. INCREDIBLE

You people claiming that Rocky didn't deserve the Academy Award for Best Picture need to take into account that this film came out right at the end of the Vietnam War, and in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal, with Richard Nixon resigning from the presidency. There was also an oil crisis in America, leaving a massive shortage of gasoline, and the country was in a deep recession, with many Americans left without employment, much like now. That is why Rocky, and other films, like 1977's Star Wars were so successful. They are very optimistic, and uplifting stories, that gave people hope, and something to root for. Rocky was a cultural phenomenon in 1976.

those are excellent points .....I am a huge movie buff and seen all the nominated films of that year and one thing I noticed about the other 4 is that in some scenes they can be hard to follow or understand or can be very depressing or too deep...they didn't appeal to all audiences or age groups like Rocky did or apply to the common man...

I love how they dragged Stallone and the appreciation they showed, respect & gratitude.

I only just noticed how sylvester looks so much like paul mccartney in the mid 60s

"Rocky" and its saga of films were some of my favorite films growing up. The first film, especially spoke volumes to people who came in droves to watch this film. This story still holds up after all of these years and still resonates with the underdogs today.

As a 28 year old who hasn’t watched Rocky until now, I believe we need movies like it right now more than ever

Notice how Stallone initially hesitated to go up on the stage. But those two men thought otherwise. They thought if there was anyone worthy of such recognition, it was Stallone. The film Rocky was basically a reflection of Stallone’s struggling days and for his script to become Best Picture and make $225 million on a $1 million budget just shows how much a miracle of this film was for Stallone. This was his big break and Stallone had come a long and very very hard way for him to wound up on that stage. Not only is this movie so inspiring, but even it’s backstory is one of the most inspiring as well.

Just look at his face. Stallone totally didn't see this coming and he's still wondering if it's all a dream. He was totally broke and suddenly his world took a 180° turn, all because he fought hard for his dream going as far as selling his beloved dog (only to buy it out later) and offering to play Rocky for free. When I was little I thought he was just another glamorous action hero, but it's only until I saw Rocky and read about it that I realized what a great man he is.

@@CraigMcGuinn seriously the golden globes classified Taxi Driver as a comedy? But then on the other hand they also classified Saturday Night Fever, Mask of Zorro and Edward Scissorhands as comedy so that may not be out of the realm of plausibility.

Rocky was a winner on screen and in real life. Look how humble Stallone was. You would think it really was Rocky up there. Or was it really Stallone in the film...Love ya Rock

Actually it was more like Rocky Vs. Network or Rocky Vs. Network Vs. Taxi Driver. Network won the the Acting Awards and I think the Writing Award also. Rocky did win Best Picture though.

This beating Taxi Driver was just like Roky beating Apollo. Amazing.

Joormachien no when you consider stallone wrote the screen play....hardly ever acted in film and refused to sell the film without him olaying the lewd role and it going on to become the highest rated boxing movie off all time...this deserves it

I personally prefer Taxi Driver and Network over Rocky. But I can see why Rocky won best picture over those films. It's definitely a much more accessible film than either of those two. I personally don't mind that it won Best Picture, because I think Rocky is a good movie in it's own right.

Back when these awards still meant something.

Back when every nomination was an epic movie that deserved to win - nowadays its all about movies nobody has heard of.

Sly wrote and refused to sell it when they tried casting another actor, Insisted that United Artist allow him to play lead! Way to stand up for your passion. And filmed it in the greatest fighting city of them all, My hometown of Philadelphia.

The 70’s were the perfect decade with New Hollywood around. All the years in the 70’s had nomineed such great movies that literally any movie could win and still be completely correct

I just got done watching Rocky on HBO. It was my first time ever seeing this work of art in the 28 years I have walked the Earth. My dads been wanting me to sit down and witness it since I was 14. The portrayal of the American Dream through the eyes of the Italian Stallion couldn’t be timelier right now.

"And to all the Rockys in the world, I love ya." Right back at ya, Stallone! I'm rooting for you to win the Oscar this year! Knock 'em dead, kid!❤️

I've seen Rocky like 50 times minimum, I just can't stop watching it after it start playing... Obviously the other films were all great masterpiece, but Rocky has an unique power that it just stick on you... Rocky became an American Icon... The character was even induce in the Boxing Hall of Fame... It's pure raw inspiration...

Sylvester was apprehensive to go up there, they had to pull him to ascend the stage. He’s a humble guy!

"Taxi Driver", "Network", etc. Good lord, imagine the feeling of "beating" those films.

Rocky has great producing. It was the first sport film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture.

this deserved to win for the scene with Adrian the night before the fight when Rocky does the "I can't beat him" monologue. That is literally one of the greatest moments in movie history. Even when Adrain says "what are we gonna do?" they way she makes it about them not just him makes me cry. She was with him 100%. Incredible scene!!

Stallone wrote a screenplay and demanded that he play the lead character. He got rejected a lot, but one studio agreed. And the rest is history!

Damn, hearing the epic theme for Rocky while winning Best Picture just felt so right.

Stallone will allways be my childhood hero. He never acted with respected directors like Spielberg or scorsese but i love the man. No matters how awful some of his movies are. He is awesome.

I think John Huston and Norman Jewison were pretty respected directors...

I cannot imagine how Stallone must have felt here. He probably couldn't believe his luck albeit deserved.

There'd be far less tragic events if everyone watched Rrocky once in their life. It's too inspirational and feeds the soul for a lifetime of positivity.

So awesome to see him raise his arms on stage just like in the movie. The award is very well deserved! 💪

If there is one best rags to riches story in the world, it undoubtedly and absolutely is Sly's. He is a legend, a true star and an amazing artist. Unlike the majority of the world, I truly believe that if it wasn't for 80's action hero typecasting, Sly would have been regarded one amazing "actor". p.s I love the 80's classic action flicks, it actually made Sly who he is today, but still, in my opinion, if one action hero can actually act, its him.

+Labeeb Tahir Sylvester Stallone never got the credit he deserved , he wasn't just a cute guy, he had a raw natural acting talent as well as writing, he's even better than I remembered him as a child when Rocky came out. He's a great movie star as good as any and better than most today , including George Clooney and Bradley Cooper a few others that are overrated . I think also his look typecast him to , looking more Italian then not , some mighty not taken him seriously , but whatever , great talent, great star

I wouldn't call it 'typecasting'. He deliberately chose his career with an emphasis on the action movies, which brought him great celebrity and wealth. Sure, he could have become a 'serious actor', and I'm sure he'd be highly regarded, but he chose roles that lead to becoming a superstar. Nothing to pity in that.

First Blood had some amazing acting, especially seeing how John Rambo was by design an introvert super soldier. Stallone really gave a voice to all those veterans that felt lost in '70s and 80's America. His emotional closing scene before he was captured was Oscar-worthy.

The modern Oscars are literally unrecognizable. There's no political grandstanding here, just great filmmakers and a great actor accepting their award

I Feel like the people themselves are to blame a bit. Every winner now is required to use his platform as some sort of preaching stand or they are ungrateful. Maybe talking about something you find important isnt bad in and on itself but it has been burned out by now.

I think today that political thing has become very common earlier very few used to talk about politics at Oscars like how Marlon Brando sent the Indian woman at Oscars.

Rocky Balboa...My love since I could watch the movie (on VHS, late 80's), until today when I am a Mom of grown Girl ❤ And she loves Rocky as well 😍 Greeting from Poland!

All these years later, Rocky movies still bring me every emotion. They are part of my childhood.😢😊

Funny story about what happened here. Sylvester Stallone rented a tuxedo for the night. When his driver pulled up to drop him off, his bowtie broke. The driver offered him his own tie, but Stallone refused. Stallone says he regrets not being dressed well for the occassion to this very day.

Bet you Stallone was hesitant cuz he didn’t have a bow tie on like everyone else. I think he did have a tie on earlier then somehow lost it. There’s some story with some taxi driver. Can’t remember all the details, but he didn’t make much of an effort to go find another tie cuz he didn’t think he was actually going to win.

No one deserved to be on that stage at that time than Sly Stalone. HE wrote the script, labored over getting it past the studio bullshit and held out for the right contract it takes to show Hollywood that even though it was a simple script, it was a damn good one.

My brain says Network for Best Picture but my Heart says Rocky for Best Picture and I’m glad it won.

One of the most inspiring movies and characters ever.

Jack Nicholson looks like he just smoked a joint that had been dipped in brandy.

The Rocky movies is about integrity, and staying true to who you are no matter the opposition. The year is now 2022 and integrity is hardly a word to most. Nobody is born tough nor weak. It's a choice.

I feel as happy for him now like this was yesterday. Congrats Sylvester Stallone, that is an all-time great movie.

I actually met the producer of this movie...and what an honor. Rocky is one of the greatest movies ever produced in the history of entertainment.

Love that they had to pull him out of his seat to get him onto the stage. Think that I've watched this movie 200 times in my life. Probably over 50 times in the last few months and never get tired of the movie.

All right listen, 1976 was a jam-packed year of great movies so picking the best one must have been very difficult. However, I feel that rocky winning meant more than it would have if any other film won, Rocky was a film written by a guy who had nothing about a guy who has nothing who's trying to make it big and "go the distance" it just has that much more of an impact that it won.

Don't confuse the 80s summer blockbusters Rocky 3-5, with Rocky. While entertaining as they were as action movies, they are far removed from the heart that is present in the original film.

Rocky is a beautiful film. Say what you want about Stallone but he hit it out of the park on Rocky. This was the tail end of the GREAT 70's movies. It all ended after the 70's for films. The score, the direction is all top flight stuff. When he goes jogging at 6am and can't quite make it. The music is cold and lonely. You feel his fear. Movies today you don't "FEEL". I would almost go so far as to say Rocky is really not a boxing movie but a love story. Its about Rocky finding his strength through finding Adrian. The missing gap in his life.

I believe your comment truly encapsulates the quintessence of films that were produced during that era, which is something that has been noticeably lacking ever since. The key is have to have somebody at the helm who truly believes in the gift of visual storytelling, as Stallone clearly did in this film.

Still love watching rocky up to this day! Solid actors music storyline

Rocky and Rocky II are arguably the best movies ever made. In the conversation at least. I also have a soft spot for Rocky III. I love the beautifulness of watching two different foes..from opposite races come together as not just friends...but family. Its the way it should have always been. I get goosebumps to this day over that movie.
