Does anyone else hear Shostakovich all over this work! Williams' palette of sonic expression is really remarkable!

0:45 I think Williams wrote the rhythms here to be in time with the mechanical voice saying "DEATH STAR APPROACHING - ESTIMATED TIME TO FIRING RANGE"

Just little clarification: Despite the credit "Orchestrated by Herbert W. Spencer", Spencer only "orchestrated" this cue in the loosest sense. John Williams writes in a (to use his description) "stenographic" manner -- by sketching on 8-10 lines, with all melody, counterpoint and dynamics precisely written down. He also provides instrumental details. Spencer worked from these "shorthand" sketches in a capacity more akin to copying. Also, Spencer was the credited "orchestrator"; Angela Morley worked on this cue as well. In fact Morley resisted the classification of her job as "orchestration", preferring the term "score preparation". Owing to the punishing deadlines typical in Hollywood, most composers scoring films have worked this way -- including Aaron Copland and John Corigliano when working in Hollywood. When questioned about sketching his cues and enlisting someone else to write-out the full score, Copland responded "If I write a letter myself or dictate it to my secretary, who has actually written the letter?" That said, some composers (depending on their skill level) do rely on the orchestrator to do more than just copying.

I'm a subscriber and I press the like button on every video from this channel. Just love it, but I wish the percussion were all displayed and determined. Most of us who already work with this stuff don't really have a major problem with brass and woodwinds, but writing so many percussion instruments sometimes is tough. Especially in the Danny Elfman videos, I wish the percussion was better exposed to us.

Also, since you’re interested, here’s my timeline (subject to change): February 7: The Asteroid Field, February 14 (Valentine’s Day): Marnie (Prelude), February 21(ish): Scherzo for X-Wings. After that I will do Anakin vs. Obi-Wan/Yoda vs. Sidious, but that’s a little bit longer so I don’t know how long that will take.
